Innovative new file management system for law firms


Law firm Schlichter, Bogard, & Denton has installed highly sophisticated software to aid in the search of internal and case-related documents. For this, the law firm has united with ISYS(R) Search Software, supplier of innovative enterprise search solutions.

With the new software application in place, the firm will avoid the tedious process of summarizing and applying a Bates stamp to each document, searching for word file summaries, referencing the Bates number, and producing the hard copy. The firm claims that the new software will greatly increase office efficiency. They believe the new and improved process with revolutionize law firm practice.

A plaintiff's law firm, Schlichter, Bogard & Denton represents individuals in personal injury, toxic tort, transportation, employment discrimination, and medical malpractice cases. ISYS has been serving leading companies and government departments in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom for more than 15 years.

U.S. firms compete with British firms for biggest international deals


U.S. law firms secured prominent places in the roster of top-earning legal advisors on global infrastructure projects for the first half of 2006. UK firms, however, took the top spots.

Research compiled by the Infrastructure Journal website reveals the total value of deals handled by prominent law firms. Among the top 10, White & Case grabbed the second position with seven deals worth $15.7 billion. Law firms Jones Day and Sullivan & Cromwell also featured on the list after successfully closing a $10 billion Spanish and French railroad acquisition deal. Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe, with two deals totaling $5.2 billion, also made the list.

British firm Clifford Chance took the lead, advising on 17 deals worth nearly $24.5 billion. Allen & Overy was rated as the most active firm with 19 deals worth a total of $10.9 billion. Herbert Smith was ranked third with five deals worth $12.5 billion, and Linklaters placed seventh with 11 deals worth $8.8 billion.

New Jersey paralegals paid less


According to a new survey on paralegal compensation, New Jersey pays paralegal less than the national average. The survey results indicated that the highest-paid paralegals are in Los Angeles, California.

Based on data printed by the New Jersey Law Journal, paralegals in Newark, New Jersey, earn an average total annual salary of $53,909. Other mid-Atlantic cities, such as Boston, Philadelphia, and DC, pay in the high $50,000 range. New York, Atlanta, and Boston pay, on average, upwards of $65,000 per year. Chicago and Los Angeles pay over $70,000 per year.

Apart from regional differences, the survey highlighted other developments in paralegal employment which included rises in compensation nationwide despite a drop in the average number of hours billed.

American Bar Association appoints attorney to review judicial nominations


The Federal Judiciary Committee of the American Bar Association has appointed attorney Leonard H. Gilbert to review presidential judicial nominees.

Gilbert is currently a partner with Holland & Knight. Previously, he served as President of the Florida Bar. He will be accountable for assessing the professional qualifications of persons nominated for appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court, circuit courts of appeals, district courts, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the Court of International Trade.

According to the Committee, questions of judicial philosophies and ideologies will not be considered when making their evaluations.

Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP has strengthened its global finance and restructuring practice by recruiting Kevin Fisher of White & Case LLP in New York. He will assist in matters pertaining to corporate transactions and will also serve global clients in different financial centers, including London and Hong Kong.

With 20 years' experience in the legal profession, Fisher specializes in finance and restructuring transactions, including high-leveraged transactions, acquisition finance transactions, and syndicated deals. In 2005, International Financial Law Review rated Fisher as one of the leading insolvency and restructuring attorneys in the U.S.

Kilpatrick Stockton solidifies Native American affairs team


Kilpatrick Stockton's addition of well-known litigator Keith Harper as partner in the Washington, DC, office is expected to bolster its Native American affairs practice.

As a recipient of the Skadden Arps Fellowship, Keith was selected to work with the Native American Rights Fund as staff attorney. He is also actively involved in the class-action lawsuit Cobell v. Kempthorne, representing over a half a million Native Americans.

Ballard Spahr in Vegas


Philadelphia-based Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll has inducted three new partners to manage the operations of the firm's new office in Las Vegas. The new office represents the first step in Ballard Spahr's stated goal of Westward expansion. They plan to make the Las Vegas office a 50-attorney entity.

The new office is likely to concentrate on five aspects: gaming, real estate development, public finance, business and finance, and litigation. While the firm plans to cater to the customized needs of its clients in Las Vegas, many predict that they will face a hard time. The Las Vegas legal community is not often kind to outsiders.

With the latest development, Ballard now has eight U.S. offices, including three offices out West - Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Denver.
