New study: Law firms discriminate against minority women

In a startling revelation, a report published by the American Bar Association accuses law firms of discriminating women in the workforce, especially minority women. According to the report "Visible Invisibility, Women of Color in Law Firms," eighty-one percent of minority women attorneys quit private law firms within five years because they are restricted to low-level assignments with little hope of advancement. This contrasts sharply with their white male counterparts, who quickly rise through the ranks at America's top law firms.

The study stresses the implementation of existing anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies and suggests proactive measures to include the participation of minority women in the law firms.

Siskind Susser and Eric Bland merge to form Siskind Susser Bland

Memphis-based Siskind Susser and New-York based Eric Bland have merged their operations to form a new law firm: Siskind Susser Bland. The merged firm will have 18 attorneys and 30 legal support personnel in offices ranging from Memphis, Atlanta, and Nashville to New York. With this alliance, Siskind Susser Bland will maintain affiliate offices in twelve countries.

Norton Rose beefs up strength in Europe

Norton Rose has embarked on expansion plans of European operations by increasing the partner strength in the project finance practice group. The firm has hired three partners at its Paris office - two in capital markets practice and one in acquisitions finance group. The Paris office has seen the inclusion of partner Roberto Cristofolino and senior associate Marie-Aude Noury, both former attorneys at Latham & Watkins, whereas Erwan Hericotte joins the firm as acquisition finance partner making the move from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. The firm's Paris office offers services in asset finance, banking, competition and regulatory, corporate finance, dispute resolution, insurance, international recovery, project finance, tax, and real estate.

The firm has also hired banking and project finance expert Stefano Zappala in its Rome's office. Duane Morris sets up Stock Options Task Force

Duane Morris LLP has announced the formation of a Stock Options Task force comprising the firm's attorneys from different practice areas and locations who are currently involved with investigating related matters for various companies and boards. The Task force will be responsible for Sarbanes-Oxley issues as well as internal and SEC investigations, securities filings and restatements, and tax and accounting.

As per the firm's estimates, nearly 2,000 publicly traded companies, especially tech and healthcare companies, face special issues regarding option grant practices, and might be engaged in questionable practices. The Task Fore will adopt a multidisciplinary approach towards working in close association with companies and board committees to address these issues.

Ballard Spahr's ninth U.S. office in Arizona

Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, has opened a new office in Phoenix which will enhance the firm's Business and Finance practice area in the state of Arizona. This follows on the heels of the new office at Las Vegas and makes it the firm's ninth office in the U.S.

The Phoenix office will be headed by Stephen Savage, an expert in business planning and corporate, commercial, and real estate transactions. Godfrey & Kahn implements latest technology

In line with the trend of law firms going high-tech, Wisconsin-based law firm Godfrey & Kahn has successfully implemented BigHand3, a digital dictation workflow system, across its offices. The law firm is the first corporate law firm in United States to implement this voice productivity tool which will be accessible to 350 attorneys and assistants across five offices. The latest technology tool is expected to improve the efficiency and productivity of staff by enabling the immediate processing of dictation into documents.

Currently the law firm is using the software in Milwaukee, Appleton, Green Bay, Madison, Waukesha, and Washington, DC, offices and in future, it has plans to add BigHand3 to its Shanghai, China office as well.
