Fulbright & Jaworski partner on the Top-20 Arbitration Practitioners list

Fulbright & Jaworski's arbitration practice was in the limelight recently when its partner Mark Baker was rated amongst the top-20 arbitration practitioners across the globe. According to Practice Law Company's Cross-border Dispute Resolution Handbook, Baker excelled in IP-related disputes. The publication provided comparative information on his inclusion in list, which was based on the reaction of his peers, and thorough research on the cases which he handled.

This was Baker's second notable achievement in as many months, after National Law Journal chose him as one of the nation's 100 most influential lawyers. Baker has also served as Chairman of International Advisory Committee at the International Center for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association. As a partner with Fulbright & Jaworski, he co-heads the firm's International Department which has 130 attorneys in 13 offices worldwide.

Jones Day rolls out additional fellowships in China

With an aim to promote legal education in China, U.S.-based Jones Day has extended its Jones Day International Legal Fellowship to two Chinese cities. The fellowship, which was until recently awarded only to 10 outstanding law students in Shanghai, has been granted to 10 law students in Beijing. Academic record, original thought, oral and written presentation skills in English and Chinese, as well as other achievements are considered for the awards.

The initiative is expected to add to the popularity of Jones Day in China. The firm has been active in China for more than 20 years, assisting clients in meeting their investment, financial, and business objectives in this expanding market. The Beijing office is the firm's second office in Mainland China, making Jones Day one of the few integrated international law firms with offices in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

In addition to the more traditional foreign direct investment work, the attorneys in this firm have expertise in advising in the areas of dispute resolution, antitrust and WTO issues, energy, venture capital, and other corporate and finance matters. Jones Day also represents Chinese corporations and institutions with respect to their investments and activities both in Mainland China and in the U.S., Europe, or elsewhere in Asia.

Freshfields, Linklaters lead equity deal rankings

The prevailing uncertainty in the equity capital markets field could not curb the growth of law firms Linklaters and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, who continue to hold their own as leading advisory firms to top corporations. According to a study conducted by Thomson Financial, 492 equity-related deals were completed across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa in the first six months of 2006. As compared to previous year, there was an increase of 29 percent in the volumes of equity capital markets reflected in the number of equity deals, which rose from 380 to 492.

Linklaters maintained the lead with 37 deals with a market share of 7.5 percent followed by Freshfields which completed 14 deals worth $8.5 billion. The legal experts attribute the success of the law firms to their respective growth strategies despite volatile market conditions due to summer slowdown. Europe, especially the UK, has witnessed an invasion of foreign companies and law firms vying to increase their market share by involving themselves in major corporate deals.

Other prominent law firms to find a place among the top-10 in the list are Norton Rose, Ashurst, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Allen & Overy, Shearman & Sterling, Clifford Chance, Jones Day, and Sullivan & Cromwell.
