Dorsey & Whitney plans to board up its San Francisco office

Minneapolis-based firm Dorsey & Whitney plans to close down its San Francisco operations by the end of this year and strengthen its existing Palo Alto practice.

Dorsey & Whitney entered in the San Francisco market in 2002 by merging with Flehr Hohbach Test Albritton & Herbert. Since then, it has witnessed steady decline in its attorney count, with nearly 75 percent of the staff leaving the firm for better opportunities.

Dorsey & Whitney began its Palo Alto operation last year by merging with Ritchey Fisher Whitman & Klein and has grown from 15 to 25 counselors. The attorneys here practice in areas such as litigation, financing and acquisitions, employment, tax, and estate planning. Bizjournals.com reports that the shift is in line with the firm's decision to reduce additional expenses and consolidate its operations at one location.

Princeton office refurbishes Sills Cummis' hopes

With an initial strength of ten attorneys, Sills Cummis Epstein & Gross opened the doors of its new office in Princeton recently. Of these ten attorneys, four Banking and Finance experts hail from Reed Smith, while the remaining six served in their Newark office's Land Use and Redevelopment Practice, and Corporate Transactional Group. The firm has implemented a strategy geared towards capturing the emerging market in areas like life sciences, medicine and medical device industries, banking and financial services, land development and real estate, and regulatory sectors in the area. The process of considerably adding on to the existing team has already begun.

The four Reed Smith lawyers to join forces with this 160-lawyer firm are Paul H. Shur as partner, and James A. Dempsey, Scott Pyfer, and Charles Panzer as Of Counsel in the Banking and Finance group. The firm is confident in its expectations to have 20 more names added to their roster by the 2007 year end.

Due to the recent changes and addition of the Reed Smith laterals, Sills Cummis is confident that they will lure in more lender banks and commercial loans.

The lure of better pastures

A recent survey found that lawyers are willing to switch jobs for reasons like better salaries or flexible hours. The survey was conducted by Robert Half Legal, a New Jersey-based legal staffing service.

According to the San Diego Business Journal, the survey was conducted among 1,000 large law firms in the United States and Canada. More than 300 attorneys participated in the survey, out of which only 3 percent were willing to stick to their current firm, while 26 percent said they would move out for better opportunity, 21 percent for better salary, and 9 percent for flexible timings.

Robert Half Legal is Robert Half International's legal staffing branch. The company places highly skilled attorneys, paralegals, and support staff in full-time and temporary positions in law firms and corporate legal departments.

DLA Piper strengthens Asian presence

Aiming to strengthen its operations in Asia, international firm DLA Piper has build up its corporate finance and M&A practice groups. The firm hired leading lawyers Koji Ishikawa and Esther Leung as partners in the firm's Tokyo and Hong Kong offices respectively. Backed with experience in corporate finance, Ishikawa previously served at the U.S. firm O'Melveny & Myers. The addition of a partner in the Tokyo office is a significant inclusion in the Asian corporate team since the firm also recently hired senior Motorola in-house lawyer Jeffery Tan as a partner in the corporate and technology practice.

Moreover, Leung, with experience in cross-border IPO listings, M&A, private equity and restructuring, formerly worked with Australian firm Mallesons Stephen Jacques. DLA Piper has three offices in China - Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, with more than 100 lawyers. In a bid to further strengthen its legal services offered in China, the firm recently hired Henry Wang, former general counsel of Shanghai General Motors, as partner in the firm's Shanghai office. The firm has witnessed significant growth in the region last year with its raid on Coudert's China practice, which added 20 lawyers.
