NYC witnessing a surge in law firm mergers

An increasing number of law firms are looking to enhance their presence in New York City. Situated in Manhattan, Crowell & Moring's new office was launched in September, 2006 and recently witnessed an influx of 15 new associates. The law firm lured 23 lawyers from competing firms King Pagano Harrison and Morgan & Finnegan, boosting its attorney strength to 350 across its five offices.

The merger between San Francisco-based Thelen Reid & Priest and Manhattan's Brown Raysman Millstein Felder & Steiner created a team of 255 attorneys based in New York City out of a total firm strength of 615 lawyers. This was followed by news of the formation of new firm Day Pitney after the merger of New Jersey-based Pitney Hardin with Boston-based Day, Berry & Howard. Recently, Philadelphia-based DrinkerBiddle & Reath and Chicago-based Gardner Carton & Douglas also combined operations, forming a 650-lawyer firm with eight attorneys based in New York City. As more and more mid-sized law firms are consolidating into larger firms to increase their regional presence, New York City is witnessing a trend that doesn't look like it's going to end any time soon.

Promotions galore at the U.S. law firms

Promotions in U.S. law firms have apparently gathered momentum, especially those located on the West Coast. Technology force Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati promoted a number of lawyers in its offices in Palo Alto, San Francisco, Washington DC, Seattle, and San Diego. The firm also announced the addition of eight new corporate partners, four IP partners, and one litigator.

At the same time, leading law firm Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker witnessed the promotion of 16 of its associates in its different offices. The move is likely to further enhance the firm's key areas including tax, corporate, M&A, and securities. The London office of Paul Hastings has seen inclusion of tax specialist Justin Hamer as partner, whereas corporate lawyer Erwan Barre has found place as partner in the Paris office. The firm's Hong Kong office now has corporate partner Maurice Hoo who oversees the Asian offices. Besides these three international promotions, all others have been made at U.S. offices.

In keeping with this trend, law firm Covington & Burling promoted ten partners including three in London, while Goodwin Procter promoted 25 attorneys as partners across its offices.

Drinker Biddle & Reath to merge with Gardner Carton

Philadelphia's oldest law firm Drinker Biddle & Reath plans to merge with Chicago-based firm Gardner Carton & Douglas on January 1, 2007.

The new firm will comprise 651 lawyers and 26 other professionals across 12 offices. The firm will maintain the name as Drinker Biddle, except for its offices in Illinois and Wisconsin, where it will be known as Drinker Biddle Gardner Carton until 2008. Alfred W. Putnam, Jr., from Drinker Biddle will be chairman of the merged firm.

With this recent development, Drinker Biddle will now have offices in three of the five biggest markets for bankruptcy filings: New York, Delaware, and Chicago, along with Texas and California. For Gardner Carton & Douglas, a larger Chicago presence would help the firm's national litigation group, particularly in the products liability sector.

Gardner Carton, known for healthcare and human resources practices, will help Drinker Biddle in the areas of intellectual property, corporate work, real estate, and investment management.

Minority women given less preference as Partners: study

Law firms across United States are playing safe when it comes to retaining women, especially minorities, as partners in the firm. The under-representation of minority women continued in 2006 with prominent regional disparities.

According to a survey conducted by NALP Directory of Legal Employers, law firms prefer minority women as associates and summer interns rather than partners. Minority women constitute just 1.48% of partners, while minority men accounted for 3.53% of partners in the nation's major law firms. However, the scenario is different in big city firms of Los Angeles; San Francisco; and Washington, DC, where women, minorities, and minority women account for higher percentage.

Overall, looking at all the lawyers represented, minorities now make up nearly 10% of lawyers at major law firms, women make up under one-third of lawyers at these firms, and minority women make up about 5% of lawyers.
