Foley & Lardner opens LA office

In addition to the existing Century City office in the area, Foley & Lardner opened its second office in Los Angeles. The new office is expected to open this fall. The move stems from the firm's strategic plans to expand its services and to increase its presence in key markets. The new downtown office will concentrate on corporate and litigation practice, while the old west-side office will continue serving clients in intellectual property and entertainment practice areas. The firm's decision to open another office was also based on the area's incredible growth and importance as a hub to the business and legal communities.

Jack Lasater, present managing partner of the Century City office, will also manage the downtown office. Reports state that the firm hired Assistant United States Attorney Jaime Guerrero and business law attorney Craig Wood to expand its litigation and corporate practices. The firm has about 70 attorneys in the area. National law firm Foley & Lardner provides a full range of corporate legal counsel to clients spread all over the country.

DLA Piper in Phoenix

International law firm DLA Piper hired Mark Nadeau and Cindy Ricketts as partners in the litigation practice group in its new office in Phoenix. The new office will also mark the firm's expanding southwest presence. The duo will fortify the firm's extensive International Dispute Resolution Arbitration practice with their expertise in the field. Earlier, both served Squire Sanders & Dempsey, LLP.

Nadeau's experience includes handling sophisticated international disputes - especially in international arbitration. At Squire Sanders, Nadeau served as co-chair of the International Dispute Resolution Group, which he founded in 1998. Ricketts is also experienced in handling cross-border disputes, including participation in trial teams in complex commercial and tort litigation matters involving multiple parties and multiple districts. She has substantial experience in motion practice, appellate practice, jury and bench trial, arbitration, and injunctive relief.

Robert J. Mathias, U.S. chair and joint global leader of DLA Piper's litigation practice, stated the addition gives "a strong new dimension to the firm's growing global capabilities in the practice area". DLA Piper's international arbitration practice has 75 attorneys. The team is spread across 63 offices in 24 countries and assists global clients with complex cross-border disputes under a wide range of arbitral rules.

Wind Power Team joins Chadbourne & Parke in Los Angeles

International law firm Chadbourne & Parke hired Edward Zaelke and Adam Umanoff as partners in its renewable energy practice group in the firm's Los Angeles office. Zaelke and Umanoff join Chadbourne from the Los Angeles office of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. At Morgan Lewis, Zaelke led the Renewable Energy Practice Group, focusing on project development and finance. Umanoff worked on the development and financing of energy projects, particularly in the wind sector. The duo will continue their focus on wind power and other alternative energy sources in the new firm too.

Chadbourne hopes to create a dominant wind power law practice with the addition of these two prominent attorneys. Zaelke and Umanoff will join Chadbourne's already strong team comprising two attorneys in Washington, DC - Keith Martin, partner and co-head of the project finance practice, and Adam Wenner, a prominent regulatory lawyer. The team also consists of Paul Weber, Rich Sonkin, and Charlie Hord, all New York office partners.

One of the fastest growing segments of the global energy business, the wind power industry saw an annual 26 percent growth rate over the last five years. The firm's capabilities in the area also fetched it the "Renewables Legal Advisor of the Year" award in 2005 instituted by the Infrastructure Journal. Chadbourne' attorneys offer a full range of legal services to its extensive client base ranging from M&A, securities, and project finance to private funds and government contract matters.

Mintz Levin, Thompson noted for diversity appreciation

Prominent law firms, Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C., and Thompson & Knight LLP were selected among the list of Multicultural Law's 2007 Top 100 Law Firms for Diversity. For Mintz Levin, this award is second in a row after the firm was named one of Vault, Inc.'s, Top 20 law firm in diversity, last August.

The survey by Multicultural Law Magazine was conducted among 200 law firms, and compiles an annual diversity list. It identifies law firms that address diversity issues within the firm with respect to power, leadership, and integrity. The publication also "talks about the workplace diversity and the roles that minorities and women play in today's business world".

Individually, the firms are committed to encourage diversity within their firm culture. The full-service 480-lawyer firm Mintz Levin has a 12-member Diversity Committee, composed of partners and non-attorney professionals. The committee reviews existing and new policies which aid in the recruiting, retention, and mentoring of its diverse employees. With more than 420 attorneys across its offices world over, Thompson & Knight has also taken vital steps toward achieving its target of diversity for its "legal, local, national, and global communities," said Pauline E. Higgins, Partner and Chief Diversity Officer.

White & Case mulls management restructure

White & Case is contemplating to revamp its existing management structure to a three-tier model. The firm is finalizing the sweeping reforms it aims to implement across its global governance system. The move, as a firm partner states, is designed to make the firm work in a more corporate fashion, with more emphasis on the management. Meanwhile, the firm is looking for a suitable successor to step in as managing partner, after the present incumbent Duane Wall retires next year March.

The firm's partners in New York support the retention of full-time managing partners. However, reports suggest that the present management board with eight fee-earning lawyer members will be replaced. A new executive board comprising two to four members will be appointed as replacement. Their functioning will be supervised by the managing partner. The firm will appoint another management-type committee comprising fee-earning partners. This committee will help the executive board implement strategic decisions.

According to Wall, the reforms will include more than one person in full-time management. It also aims to bridge gaps between practice groups spread across its international offices. Meanwhile, the firm's four-member governance committee is finalizing details of the proposal based on the partner retreat debate held in Prague in January. The management boards' decision is expected next month, before it goes to vote asking for 85 percent of the equity partnership's approval, by April.

Debevoise registers steady growth financially

Joining the club of a few Wall Street firms who officially release financial figures, New York-based law firm Debevoise & Plimpton declared its 2006 financial results. The firm recorded a gradual upward trend in both its turnover and profit for 2005. This also marks the general healthy growth trend registered among the U.S. firms.

The 132-partner firm registered more than a seven percent rise in its turnover as well as profit per partner (PPP), to $575m and $1.806m, respectively. Though the firm's net profit grew more than 11 percent to $238m, its revenue per lawyer only rose by 2 percent, to $945,720. Most of the figures come from its M&A department which saw a successful year handling many important financial deals.

The few other New York firms to have announced their figures saw mixed growth. Firms such as Willkie Farr & Gallagher saw nearly 14 percent growth in turnover and partner profits; Dewey Ballantine registered a 4 percent turnover rise; and Shearman & Sterling registered only 1 percent growth in the last financial year.

Robert Eckels to join Fulbright as a partner

Robert Eckels is joining the international law firm Fulbright & Jaworski LLP as a partner. Prior to this, Eckels worked as a Harris County judge for 12 years overseeing the county's executive, legislative, and judicial functions. Steven B. Pfeiffer, chair of Fullbright's Executive Committee, said that Eckels' addition as partner will help the firm improve its existing relationships with government leaders in Texas, Washington, DC, and elsewhere. On his part, Eckels aims to build up the firm's administrative, regulatory, and government relations practice for its clients.

In the new position, Eckels will contribute to the firm's national public finance practice, especially as disclosure counsel. Fulbright's more than 50 attorneys in its 16 worldwide offices offer clients advice in public finance practice. The firm is an established name in the practice of disclosure counsel.
