Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe reawakens the salary war in California

Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe has revived the salary war. After raising salaries in the New York and Washington offices in February, the firm has now matched salaries on the West Coast. First-year associate salaries at all offices start at $160,000, except for Sacramento and Pacific Northwest offices.

Associates received a memo and videocast from the firm Chairman Ralph Baxter. According to the 2007 schedule, second-year associates at the California-based firm will receive $170,000; third-years will make $185,000; fourth-years, $210,000; and $230,000 for the fifth-year associates. Sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-year associates will draw $250,000, $265,000, and $280,000, respectively.

O'Melveny & Myers and Morrison & Foerster were quick to follow suit, matching Orrick's salaries within 24-hours of the announcement. All of their U.S. offices are now at the $160,000 scale. O'Melveny's and Morrison's salary raises will be effective May 1st while Orrick associates will be waiting until June 1st to see their raises.

Most big firms have adopted these scales in New York. However, a majority of California firms continue to pay $145,000 to first-year associates. Let's wait and see who will be the next big California firm to join the battle. Gibson Dunn? Latham & Watkins? Only time will tell.

Thompson Hine partner selected for 2007 Burton Award for Legal Achievement

Leslie W. Jacobs, a partner at Thompson Hine, LLP, will receive the 2007 Burton Award for Legal Achievement for his article "Criminal Enforcement of Antitrust
Laws - Problems with the U.S. Model." Out of nearly 1,000 law firms that competed, only 30 partners will be awarded.

Jacobs, part of Thomas Hine's Competition, Antitrust & White-Collar Crime practice group, wrote the article for the Fordham Competition Law Institute on international law and policy. He is involved in other professional and community activities and also writes and lectures on various legal and business topics.

The Burton Foundation is a volunteer and non-profit organization. The Burton Awards recognize excellence in legal writing. Articles written by law firm partners, counsel, or law school students can only be submitted by managing partners from the nation's largest 1,000 law firms and law school deans. Selections are then made by law school deans and managing partners of the same law firms.

In a double win for the firm, Thopson Hine has been ranked fourth in the country among firms with 500 or less lawyers, on the parameters of general satisfaction and integration effectiveness. The survey was conducted by Major, Lindsey & Africa, a legal search firm.

Thompson Hine, a leading business law firm in the U.S., was founded in 1911 and has a staff of nearly 370 lawyers. The firm has offices in Atlanta, Cincinnati, and New York among other places.

Bingham merges with LA boutique, acquires 40 lawyers

In its third combination with a California firm in five years, Bingham McCutchen, LLP, will absorb nearly 40 lawyers from Los Angeles boutique firm Alschuler Grossman, LLP.

During the 55 years of its practice, Alschuler Grossman has made its mark in high-stakes business litigation. The combination is expected to bolster Boston-based Bingham's litigation strength in Southern California.

The Alschuler combination is Bingham's eighth since 1997 and raises the firm's number of lawyers in California to 350.

Apart from litigation, Alschuler also deals in the real estate, M&A, securities, and intellectual property practice areas. The firm, with a strong base in Los Angeles, has recently been in the news because of its accountants' liability and securities class actions, contract disputes, complex business litigation and patent infringement lawsuits.

Bingham McCutchen now has 1,000 lawyers operating from its 13 global offices.

Kilpatrick installs communication device to upgrade legal proceeds and client services

International law firm Kilpatrick Stockton has installed 11 LifeSize Room systems in its seven U.S. offices and one in its London office.

LifeSize Room System is a video communication device which facilitates the law firm to organize point-to-point meetings more effectively. The system links various sites for briefings, depositions, meetings with clients, and job interviews.

The system saves the firm valuable time enabling it to maximize the partners' time-to-billing ratios. In effect, it controls the overall cost for both the clients as well as the firm. Recently, by using the LifeSize Room System, the firm managed to complete a series of 80 annual partner-to-partner review meetings in only nine days. Normally, it takes the firm 45 days to accomplish a task of this magnitude.

Craig Malloy, CEO of LifeSize, commented that the rise of this device in legal practice is because of the significant relation between the hourly attorney fees and client expenses.
