Attorney assigned to a pet

In an unusual development in Memphis, an attorney will now represent a pet belonging to Ron Callan Jr., 35, who died on New Year's Day. While the death was ruled as suicide, people close to the deceased were involved in a bitter fight for custody of his pet dog, Alex, a 13-year-old golden retriever.

Callan Jr. was a graduate of the Memphis University School and Tulane University. He was a partner in Callan Salvage & Appraisal Co., along with his father. He had no written will and left behind a $2 million estate. His father has been named administrator of the estate and took Alex with him to work during the day. However, the deceased's mother, Esther Snow Gnall, and his fiancé Kim Guill also wanted to keep the dog.

The court decided to appoint a representative for Alex, when the battle for custody turned ugly with the lawyers also fighting. It has been ruled that the divorced parents, Callan Sr. and Gnall will share Alex's custody, as well as healthcare and medical expenses.

Tomlinson Zisko disbands to join Greenberg Traurig

Full-service international law firm Greenberg Traurig's East Palo Alto office stands to profit from the dissolution of Silicon Valley boutique Tomlinson Zisko, LLP. Both the co-founders, William Zisko and Timothy Tomlinson, who closed shop after 25 years, will join Greenberg Traurig.

William Zisko will join Greenberg's corporate practice as a shareholder, and Timothy Tomlinson will join the Securities Practice as of counsel. The boutique's three other lawyers will join other law firms in the area.

In its hay days, the boutique had as many as 20 attorneys, which dwindled to five, at the time of its "amicable" disbanding. With more than five decades of combined legal experience in the Silicon Valley, the former partners had built a formidable reputation in the corporate and securities practices. Tomlinson Zisko represented clients in corporate finance, securities, IP, litigation, tax, and real estate matters.

A top-tier firm both at the national and international levels, Greenberg's total attorney strength in its offices world over is 1,500.

Thompson Coburn, LLP, a St. Louis-based firm, is merging with FagelHaber, LLC, a Chicago-based firm. The merger, expected to be completed later this year, will create a firm of around 330 attorneys working in Washington, DC, Chicago, St. Louis, and southern Illinois.
