London-based Latham pays highest among U.S. firms in England

U.S. law firm Latham & Watkins has turned out to be the highest paying law firm in London. Its pay packets to attorneys in the English city outmatch that of their peers in the Apple city, states legalweek.com. The law firm confirmed that its first year solicitors receive remuneration of around £96,000 before bonuses. However, unlike many U.S. firms, which have set bonus system, Latham lawyers in the London office are not always assured of bonuses. In comparison, an average attorney at New York who gets paid $160,000 with conversion will get only £81,000, according to an exchange rate set in 2005. The new lawyers at Latham draw £4,000 more a year than the pay packets of their counterparts in other U.S. firms operating in England.

Seyfarth Shaw hires IP attorneys, hikes pays

Chicago-based Seyfarth Shaw, LLP, raided competitor Brown, Rudnick, Berlack, Israels, LLP, for three intellectual property lawyers, apart from another IP lawyer from Cesari and McKenna, LLP. All the four new IP lawyers are registered to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office.

With the addition of the new attorneys, Seyfarth's IP practice at Boston will have 28 attorneys, while the total strength will exceed 80. Meanwhile, in a bid to retain its top position in the competitive Sacramento legal market, the firm with effect from April 1 has also hiked first year associates' salaries to $135,000 from the current $121,000.

New doors open for Rider Bennett's attorneys

Traditional law firm Rider, Bennett, Egan, and Arundel will close doors May 31. One of the top-drawer firms in Minnesota, the move to shut shop after nearly five decades of business comes as a major destabilizing factor for its more than 90 lawyers and 100 staff. The firm provided services in trial work, business law, and also trusts and estates. Steve Plunkett, managing partner of the erstwhile firm said the old firm's attorneys will continue to serve the firm's clients in their own capacities, either individually as independent practitioners or collectively by opening new law firms, or by joining other law firms as employees.

No sooner the closure of the firm was officially announced, other law firms rallied to rope in the firms' attorneys together with their client-list. Of the 90 plus attorneys, 83 have already changed their addresses to the new ones. Big names like Gray Plant Mooty annexed eight. Bassford Remele took in eight trial lawyers, including Steve Plunkett, while Briggs & Morgan also took a sizeable share of the attorney loot in various practice areas.

The other Minneapolis firms that opened doors to include Rider Bennett attorneys are Ford & Harrison, Moss & Barnett, Lind, Jensen, Sullivan & Peterson, Halleland Lewis Nilan & Johnson, Faegre & Benson, and Fredrikson & Byron, reports bizjournals.com.

Alan Salpeter, Mayer Brown's rainmaker goes to rival camp

Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw's Chicago office lost a prominent revenue generator and a high-profile litigation partner to its New York-based rival law firm LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae. Salpeter, an ace trail lawyer, was with Mayer Brown since 1972, and has successfully represented major banks and accounting firms for the firm.

One of the highly-paid partners, his move has come as massive blow to the firm, which is at present reeling under several major restructuring and firm-wide management changes. Revenue-wise one among the top 10 U.S. law firms, Mayer Brown has recently retrenched 45 partners in an attempt to bolster its sagging profits. LeBoeuf Lamb, with nearly 30 attorneys on board looks at Salpeter to bolster its Chicago practice. The firm hopes to leverage on Salpeter's lucrative corporate litigation practice.

Post & Schell's 'Green Hospital' initiative to serve healthcare community

Post & Schell, P.C., has created a new inter-disciplinary national practice team - the Hospital Environmental Group - comprising environmental, construction, and energy lawyers. The team will support the healthcare community and its rapidly expanding "green hospital" initiative. The law firm's attorneys have vast experience from working together on a wide range of complex environmental matters for its diverse healthcare clients. Hence, the Hospital Environmental Group is a "natural fit" for the law firm which wants to concentrate directly on the "green hospital initiative that is being embraced by hospitals and health systems around the country."

The new unit will be led by Terry Bossert, prominent environmental lawyer in Pennsylvania and a former general counsel to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Beside him the team will have Gary Wilson, senior construction law partner and Mike Hassell, one of five energy law partners in the law firm.

Bossert will work from the firm's Harrisburg office. He said the team is equipped to meet the often "complicated, delicate, and potentially costly" healthcare issues confronting the patients and the service community. Most hospitals and health systems are now stepping up energy conservation, environment protection, and maintaining eco-friendly amenities.

The group will provide strategic planning for environmental protection, design, and implementation. It will also implement energy alternatives and efficiencies, and traditional regulatory issues like pharma waste management, red bag waste, recycling, etc.

Established in 1968, Philadelphia-based Post & Schell has nearly 160 lawyers in its seven offices around the country serving a diverse clientele with a full range of litigation, transactional, regulatory, compliance, consulting, and educational services.
