Former DLA Piper partners form new law firm

Two former partners at DLA Piper, LLP, have launched their own Chicago law firm, Cheng Cohen, LLP, specializing in work with franchisors.

Ric Cohen, 46, and Amy Cheng, 35, started the West Loop firm in part in response to clients complaining on the rates charged by DLA. Cheng Cohen's rates are about 25% lower than DLA's. Cheng Cohen's clients include fast-food purveyor Red Robin, Gloria Jean's Coffees, and sandwich chain Quiznos. Cohen has an expertise in commercial litigation, which includes intellectual property, valuation, securities actions, contract disputes, antitrust, and technology. Cheng specializes in domestic and international commercial transactions, general corporate work, franchise, and licensing and distribution law. The firm manages all categories of business and commercial litigation from simple contract disputes to complex class actions. Cheng Cohen employs two part-time lawyers, apart from Cohen and Cheng as partners. The firm expects to hire two full-time attorneys this summer.

Cooley Godward's new shop to tap technology

Well-known Silicon Valley law firm Cooley Godward Kronish opened a Boston office with 10 partners. The move of expansion to Boston comes from the firm trying to tap into the region's booming technology and life sciences markets. Cooley will set up a major New England presence with a focus on life sciences, venture and private equity fund representation, M&A, emerging and public companies, and IP and commercial litigation. Eminent corporate attorneys John Hession and Lester J. Fagen will lead the new office.

The merger of Silicon Valley firm Cooley Godward and New York boutique law firm Kronish Lieb Weiner & Hellman resulted in the formation of Cooley Godward Kronish last year. Both law firms have a combined 50 years of practice in Boston.

California-based Cooley Godward Kronish is a full-service law firm with more than 600 lawyers. It has offices in main commercial, government, and technology centers such as New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Reston, Broomfield, Boston, Palo Alto, and Washington, DC.

Gambrell & Stolz and Baker Donelson to merge operations

It's a season of active mergers and acquisitions. Towing the line, two more law firms with strong political ties have resolved to merge operations. Atlanta-based Gambrell & Stolz is joining forces with Memphis-based law firm of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz.

Established in 1963, Gambrell & Stolz's 36 attorneys will work together with Baker Donelson's 500 attorneys and public policy advisers. The former will also benefit from Baker Donelson's wider reach in the legal market and its 14 worldwide offices. Linda Klein, managing partner of Gambrell & Stolz, who will serve as a co-managing shareholder of Baker Donelson's Atlanta office, describes the union as a "strong cultural fit." Baker Donelson's 14 attorneys in Atlanta will relocate to Gambrell & Stolz offices and practice in intellectual property and patent law in the new firm under the name of Baker Donelson.

Gambrell & Stolz serves clients in a variety of practice areas including commercial litigation, business and corporate finance, real estate, healthcare, and eminent domain.

King & Spalding opens shop in Charlotte

Prominent international law firm King & Spalding opened an office in Charlotte, NC. This is the firm's third new office in the last year and its eighth international location.

Four prominent partners and an associate from the Charlotte-based law firm of Kennedy Covington will join the board of the new office. Of the four partners-George Covington, Cory Hohnbaum, Mark Thigpen, and Jeff Brown-Brown, a well known real estate lawyer, will serve as office managing partner. Wen Hutchinson will join the new set up as counsel. The new office will look after litigation, real estate, corporate, and finance practices. Looking at the "deep connections" it has in the region, the firm hopes to serve the increasing needs of its clients in the emerging market in Charlotte and throughout the region.

King & Spalding has more than 800 lawyers spread across its offices all over the globe.

Steven Seagal sues Loeb & Loeb for charging too much

Actor Steven Seagal is suing Loeb & Loeb, a law firm that previously represented him. Seagal, 56, filing a lawsuit against the firm in Los Angeles Superior Court, accused it of charging him excessive fees. Incidentally, the actor had hired the law firm's services in 2002, for an extortion trial and subsequently in a criminal trial of his former business associate, Julius Nasso. The law firm charged Seagal of approximately $1.1 million, of which the actor had already paid about $500,000. However, after a legal audit, the actor began suspecting that the law firm was "substantially" overcharging him. Seagal stopped further payment and slapped the lawsuit, claiming $450,000 in general damages. The law firm, on the other hand maintains that Seagal still owes it $575,400.

DD&V's Walter and Linda join forces with Ward and Smith

Triangle's first tech law firm Daniels, Daniels & Verdonik (DD&V) merged operations with New Bern-based Ward and Smith, P.A. DD&V concentrated on the high-tech industry since its inception in 1982. The Daniels, both Linda and Walter, besides partner Verdoni and Jose Cortina are well known lawyers in the region's high tech practice. In the new set up, the four lawyers will now practice in intellectual property, securities, mergers and acquisitions, and business law. Ward and Smith has more than 70 attorneys working in its offices in Raleigh, Greenville and Wilmington, besides New Bern. Initially serving clients from the Raleigh office, Daniels expects a new shop later in West Raleigh to establish tech practice. Some names from DD&V's list of clientele include Channel Vision, Affinergy, Etrials Worldwide Inc., EMC Corp., and StrikeIron Inc.

Duane Morris opens shop in Vietnam

Duane Morris, LLP, 103-year-old law firm, opened offices in Vietnam’s two principal cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The Vietnam expansion follows the firm’s move to strengthen its foothold in Asia as well as newer markets. Earlier in January, the firm opened an office in Singapore.

Duane Morris partner and former Mexican Ambassador to Singapore Eduardo Ramos-Gómez, who also leads the Singapore office, will head the firm’s Vietnam arm. The new office will practice in corporate finance, project finance, energy, cross-border transactions, restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, real estate, and telecommunications. One of the few U.S.-based firms in Vietnam, Duane Morris lawyers and staff in its new office are fluent with all major local languages. Attorneys, Chris Muessel and Oliver Massmann will join as partners, while Giles T. Cooper will join the firm as counsel.

One of the largest law firms in the world, Duane Morris is a full-service firm, which has more than 600 lawyers, besides 100 independent professional affiliates employed in other disciplines.
