Allen & Overy has appointed Howard M. Goldwasser and Lawton M. Camp as partners in its New York office. Both were previously partners in the Structured Finance Group of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. The firm has praised their experience, particularly in the strategically important areas of cash and synthetic CDOs, as well as their flexibility to adapt to new products and new markets.

Howard M. Goldwasser became partner with Orrick in 1999 and has broad-ranging Japanese and U.S. securitization experience. He has represented underwriters and other arrangers, originators and issuers, credit-enhancers and investors, including ABCP conduits, in securitization transactions in Asia and the United States. He has also represented banks and non-bank lenders in a variety of financings, including project financings (construction phase and term phase), secured and unsecured financings, LBO financings and single lender and syndicated financings.

Lawton M. Camp joined Orrick in 2001 and has experience in a variety of structured finance transactions, which include collateralized loan, bond and debt obligations; synthetic collateralized debt obligations; credit card receivables; trade receivables; mutual fund fee receivables; and various derivative instruments and structured financial products.

Allen & Overy has a leading U.S. and international capital markets practice that includes one of the largest and most integrated global teams of lawyers handling derivatives, structured finance and securitizations. The move illustrates the firm's long term commitment to this practice

The business of law school

Many law schools have implemented new professional strategies in the ten years since the American Bar Association first allowed for-profit law schools. Though still small in numbers, their approach sets for-profit law schools apart. They are constantly looking for ways to recruit the best talent and secure the best placements for their graduates. Not-for-profit institutions, including about 185 ABA-accredited institutions across the U.S., are constrained to follow suit to keep pace. The question being wrestled with is how to increase revenues without increasing tuition fees in order to satisfy demands for smaller classes and competitive facilities.

The InfiLaw System, managed by Rick Inatome, is one such institution. The institution has established itself as a leader in making legal education more responsive to the realities of new career dynamics. With a mission to establish student-centered, ABA accredited law schools, it includes Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, FL, Phoenix International School of Law in Phoenix, AZ, and its newest school, Charlotte School of Law in Charlotte, NC, scheduled to open in 2006.

Rising salaries in Delaware

Firms in Wilmington are on a spree of associate salary raises. Morris, Nichols, Arsht & Tunnell LLP is leading the way.

The firm, which consistently appears among the top law firms in national rankings, announced a salary hike of $10,000 for first-year associates. Annual remuneration for newcomers will move from $125,000 to $135,000. Morris Nichols also announced that it is raising salaries commensurately across the board for all its associates. Known for the significant number of cases filed and for its base of Fortune 500 clients, the firm is also recognized as a trend setter since the last wave of substantial pay hikes among Delaware-based firms had also been led by Morris Nichols back in the summer of 2004.

The same hike was announced by Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, LLP, on the same day. As one of the largest firms in Delaware, the firm has nearly 100 attorneys based in Wilmington.

Though no other firm has so far announced such a pay raise, Fish & Richardson, a national law firm with more than 350 lawyers, also plans to raise the starting salaries to $135,000. The firm practicing in intellectual property, litigation, and corporate law is the only firm with a truly national intellectual property practice. Not far behind, Morris, James, Hitchens & Williams LLP declared that it would increase its first-year pay to $120,000 in September.

All three of the firms paying first-years in the $135,000/year range are the highest paying firms in Delaware with a few exceptions, such as Skadden Arps, which pays its first-year associates $140,000.
