Ropes & Gray plans to go to Japan in fall


If the Daini Tokyo Bar Association gives its approval, Ropes & Gray, LLP, will open its first overseas office in Japan. The Boston firm, which is planning to capture the lucrative intellectual property and private equity business in the Asian subcontinent, will open doors to its new office by September.

The new firm will operate with the moniker Ropes & Gray Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi Jimusho. Two Boston-based resident intellectual property partners, Jim DeGraw and Steve Baughman, who will relocate to Japan, will head the new four-attorney office. Two associates will assist them. Ropes & Gray also has offices in New York; Washington, DC; and San Francisco, which serve Japanese clients in the U.S. on patent and other intellectual property issues.

Nine new partners for Fried Frank


New York-based prominent international law firm Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson elected nine of its lawyers to partnership levels.

Most of the promotions took place in the U.S. offices with six new partners in the Manhattan headquarters and one in Washington, DC, office. Paris saw two promotions for the European sector. The new partners, who will join September, include antitrust lawyers Peter Guryan and Richard Park; corporate associates Francois Hellot, Tiffany Pollard, Damian Ridealgh and Joshua Wechsler; litigation counsel Barbara Levy; bankruptcy lawyer Brian Pfeiffer; and tax lawyer Eli Weiss.

Besides operating an office in Frankfurt, law firm Fried Frank runs offices in Hong Kong, London, New York, Paris, and Washington, DC. The firm's 600+ attorneys represent major investment banking firms, private equity houses and hedge funds, as well as many of the largest companies in the world.

BWI practice offered at Caplan Law Firm


The Caplan Law Firm, P.A., after successfully representing clients issued with tickets for drunken driving or subjected to unfair DWI arrests, has now turned its attention to helping the drunken boatmen. The firm's principal attorney Allan Caplan, announcing the latest specialty practice offered by the firm, the boating while intoxicated (BWI) practice, stated the summer months see most of the BWI cases. This happens when people operate any motorized water-vehicle under the influence of spirits. These motorized crafts include motor boats and jet skis, and also water skis.

Recognized as a top criminal defense and Minnesota DUI law firm, Caplan has successfully represented numerous clients in a vast range of criminal matters.

Gibbons adopts BTP's converged voice and data network


New York City's prominent IT consulting firm Business Technology Partners, Inc. (BTP), has empowered law firm Gibbons P.C., with companywide VoIP system and secure remote access.

In a bid to support the law firm's business operations which is carried out mostly through phone and email, BTP installed an end-to-end Internet Protocol (IP) network, a unified messaging system as well as integrated time-tracking, billing, and telephone recording applications in the firm's Newark headquarters. The VoIP phone system with email and voicemail is operable through one common interface, enabling the firm to have a centralized storehouse for receiving and handling all client communications. BTP's Dimension Data's CATT application effortlessly assimilates with Cisco's VoIP technology which tracks billable phone time by automating the process of capturing billable time, creating reports, and invoices.

Yetter & Warden opens shop in Austin


Houston-based business and technology litigation law firm Yetter & Warden, LLP, has opened its office in Austin under the leadership of attorney Greg Coleman. Coleman comes to the firm from Weil Gotshal & Manges's Austin office where he practiced national appellate.

Yetter & Warden will focus on a national appellate practice now and hopes to add six to seven more attorneys when fully functional. C.B. Richard Ellis looks after the firm's transaction practices. The firm's list of clientele includes well-known names including American Airlines, General Electric, Levi Strauss & Co., and Southwest Airlines. Commenting on the new location, Coleman stated that with improved technological adoption, the law firm can have both "national and local practice from one location."

DLA Piper expands geographical reach with new Central & Eastern Europe offices


International law firm of DLA Piper opened a new office in Munich, effective August 1. The Munich office brings the total of the firm's German offices to four. The other offices are situated in Cologne, Hamburg, and Frankfurt. The move fortifies the firm's presence in the German soil as a major player in key commercial areas. DLA Piper's Technology, Media, and Commercial (TMC) partner in Cologne office, Thomas Jansen will head the new office in Munich. With him, two more attorneys relocated to Munich. The new office will at present concentrate on TMC practice and corporate matters.

Meanwhile the firm opened a new office in Warsaw, the ninth office in the Central and Eastern Europe sector and appointed three Polish partners to lead the new office. Experienced commercial lawyers Krzysztof Wiater and Pawel Grzejszczak who specialize in energy and telecommunication related matters join the firm from Squire, Sanders & Dempsey's Warsaw office. Michal Zieniewski, the third partner joins DLA Piper from the Warsaw office of CMS Cameron McKenna and specializes in the construction and energy industries on projects and finance-related matters. The new Warsaw office will advise companies and financial institutions on a range of corporate and commercial matters.
