Prominent healthcare lawyers join Arent Fox

Two prominent healthcare specialists in California, Lowell C. Brown and Jonathon E. Cohn joined law firm Arent Fox, LLP, in its Los Angeles, CA office as partners, effective August 7. The duo comes from the Los Angeles office of Foley & Lardner, LLP.

Arent Fox hopes to leverage on the duos expertise to boost the firm's healthcare practice in the area as well as add at least another three associates to the group. Brown advises hospitals, health systems, long-term care facilities, and has significant experience with laws relating to operational issues, including the design and implementation of compliance programs, among others. Cohn concentrates on litigation and trial work, specializing on healthcare issues.

Full-service law firm Arent Fox has more than 300 lawyers in its offices in Washington, New York and Los Angeles and represents clients in areas including intellectual property, real estate, healthcare, life sciences, and litigation.

Am Law's mid-level associates' survey

Some of the country's top-drawer law firms have been ranked as quality workplaces by the mid-level associates in The American Lawyer's mid-level associates' annual survey. The survey measures these associates' satisfaction from working for these top-notch law firms through a questionnaire. The survey posed an average of 11 questions that summarize the firm's qualities relating to workplace benefits like good compensation, collegiality, associates-partners relations, transparency of financial and other deals, billable hours requirements, mentoring, and retention. The rankings scores are based on a one-to-five scale, with five being the highest score. Responses from 7,172 third-, fourth- and fifth-year associates (law school classes of 2002, 2003, and 2004) were taken together to calculate the individual firm scores. The results were published in the August 2007 edition of The American Lawyer magazine.

Among the 164 law firms rated for associate job satisfaction, multipractice law firm Pepper Hamilton, LLP, was ranked ninth. In Pittsburgh, Pepper Hamilton stood first, taking the second place in Philadelphia, while overall the firm was placed third among the top 100 Am Law Firms. Allen & Overy has ranked 25th out of 164 firms, while its New York office took the seventh place out of the 88 surveyed.

Helms Mulliss & Wicker grows to formidable strength

Fox Rothschild on merger spree, adds Binder to the list

In an attempt to solidify its presence in the western Montgomery County and northern Chester County, full-service national law firm Fox Rothschild, LLP, merged operations with Pennsylvania-based law firm Binder, Kalis & Proctor, P.C.

The merger provides both the firms with the opportunity to boost client services, and also to enhance current practice areas. It will help Binder law firm expand its client base with the addition of more than 400 attorneys from Fox who serve clients in nearly 40 different practice areas. The recent merger with Binder follows Fox's recent spree of mergers including that with Goldman and Kramer; Young, Moriwaki and Greenfader, LLP and MillerMitchell, P.C. Attorneys Stephen H. Kalis, and Steven J. Proctor will join Fox's real estate practice as partner and special counsel respectively, while Howard E. Kalis, III, will partner the tax & estates practice. While they continue to work in their current Pottstown office, they will also work out of Fox Rothschild's Chester County office.

Pennington Law Firm develops new user-friendly website

White & Case elects Hugh Verrier as Chair of the Firm

Prominent project finance and banking lawyer Hugh Verrier has been chosen as chair of White & Case, LLP. He will succeed Duane D. Wall, managing partner, as the head of the firm. Verrier is also a member of the firm's eight-member management board and executive partner of White & Case's Moscow office.

Verrier will join the firm's New York office to assume responsibility of a leader of the management team under a new governance arrangement, which the firm established recently. Verrier led the firm's Moscow office since 1998. As the chair of the firm, Verrier will lead an executive committee comprising three partners besides him, and an eight-member partnership committee for a four-year term of office.

White & Case has more than 2,000 lawyers in 35 offices in 23 countries.

Former Partners at Holland & Knight Open New Boutique

A group of former partners at international law firm Holland & Knight has combined forces to form their own shop, Avila Rodriguez Hernandez Mena & Ferri LLP (ARHM & F), a boutique firm which will cover domestic and international business and litigation.

This group comprises six top-notch legal professionals from South Florida-Alcides Avila, Wilfredo (Fred) Rodriguez, Eugenio (Gene) Hernandez, Patricia Hernandez, Daniel Mena, and Marco Ferri. The partners who have worked together for more than two decades are confident that their firm will offer services at par with larger firms, but with the "flexibility and personal service of a boutique organization."
