Dechert Advises ETF Securities on World's First Exchange-Traded Precious Metals Platform
International law firm Dechert LLP advised regular client ETF Securities Limited, the world pioneer of Exchange Traded Commodities (ETCs), on another world first for the London Stock Exchange, with the listing of a range of physically backed, precious metal, exchange traded commodities (ETCs).

This is the first time platinum, palladium and precious metals baskets have been made available to investors through ordinary stockbroking accounts as these new ETCs - along with silver and gold ETCs - were this week admitted to trading on the London Stock Exchange in an innovative new listing. The listing of the silver ETC is the first time a physical silver ETC has been available to investors outside the United States.

ETF Securities Limited, through its subsidiary ETFS Oil Securities Limited, also launched the world's first oil ETCs, ETFS Brent Oil and ETFS WTI Oil, in July 2005. Dechert also advised ETF Oil Securities Limited on the launch of these ETCs, as well as ETFS Commodity Securities Limited on its simultaneous launch of 29 separate ETCs in the UK, comprising 19 types of individual securities and 10 types of index securities (and a further 19 types of micro securities) in September 2006, all separately listed on the London Stock Exchange.

The Dechert team advising ETF Securities was led by financial services partner Andrew Hougie, assisted by Lucy Reynolds, Abigail Bell and Jessica Brescia.

Andrew Hougie commented: "We are delighted to have worked with ETF Securities and ETF Metal Securities on the launch of these ETCs on the London Stock Exchange. They represent a world first in platinum and palladium and the first time an ETC has been created in respect of a basket of precious metals."

Mourant du Feu & Jeune advised ETF Securities in Jersey.

Firm Hits New High for M&A Numbers
Bryan Cave LLP improved upon its strong position in the M&A market, according to figures released by Thomson Financial for the first quarter 2007. The legal advisory of worldwide mergers and acquisitions reports Bryan Cave has hit a new high in two important categories.

The firm ranked seventh relative to the number of transactions completed involving a U.S. company, based on 25 completed transactions. Bryan Cave tied for eighth last year in the same category.

Partner Profiled for Courtroom Success
Bryan Cave LLP Partner Steve Mauer describes himself as a problem-solver. Both colleagues at Bryan Cave and opponents in the courtroom might also add “fighter” to that description.

“I wouldn’t want to be on the other side of him,” Partner Herb Kohn recently told the Kansas City Business Journal, when it profiled Mauer for his busy schedule as a trial lawyer and active community member. “He’s tough, he does his homework and he’s always ready.”

Mauer represents a variety of businesses and municipalities as plaintiffs and defendants. For years, he has been the primary trial lawyer for National Bank of Kansas City. As such, he has participated in breach of contract suits, real property litigation, claims of breach of duty and a variety of others. Co-leader of the firm’s Fiduciary Litigation Team, Mauer also has represented Bank of America in several matters where beneficiaries sought millions of dollars.

In addition, Mauer counsels numerous Missouri municipalities. He serves as city attorney for three communities and as trial counsel for several others, representing them in breach of contract, civil rights, police brutality, employment disputes, administrative matters and other types of actions.

Among his civic involvement, Mauer is chairman of the Independence Chamber of Commerce, on the Board of Trustees for Centerpoint Medical Center, is a past president of the Sunshine Center School for Developmentally Handicapped Children in Independence, is on the Board of Trustees for Legal Aid of Western Missouri and is a past chairman and on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Kansas City. Mauer has been so involved in Kansas City and its surrounding municipalities that he was named Independence Citizen of the Year in 1998, even though he lives in Overland Park.

“That’s quite an accomplishment, but Steve thinks big picture – metrowide,” said Rick Hemmingsen, president and CEO of the Independence Chamber of Commerce. “You need big thinkers like Steve Mauer to pull things together.”

Schnader Raises Starting Salaries for Associates in Philadelphia to $135,000
The Executive Committee of Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP has approved an increase in first-year associate salaries in its Philadelphia office from $125,000 to $135,000, effective September 1, 2007, with corresponding adjustments to starting salaries in Schnader’s other offices. The Associates Professional Development Committee – which advises the Executive Committee on associate issues – is also reviewing and will make recommendations on salaries of more senior classes of associates in all offices. The Executive Committee also announced an increase in the year-end merit bonus pool.

“These changes reflect changes in the market in Philadelphia, and across the nation, with regard to starting salaries,” said Chairman Ralph Wellington. “However, beyond just the changes in the market, these increases also reflect how much the firm greatly values its associates. We chose to take these steps in order to retain and attract the best, most talented young attorneys.” He noted that building and maintaining a strong group of attorneys is consistent with the firm’s long-standing commitment to excellence and dedication to providing clients with top-notch legal services.
