SGR PARTNER RON WELLS REMEMBERED
A message from Steve Forte, managing partner of Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LLP:

It is with great sadness that we announce our friend and partner Ron Wells passed away peacefully the afternoon of April 26. Our prayers and thoughts go out to his wife Judy and their entire family.

Ron was a partner in SGR’s Tax Section. He was also a member of the firm’s Executive Compensation and ERISA/Employee Benefits practice area. Ron was a graduate of Duke University where he received his B.A. in History. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 until 1979. In 1981 he received his J.D. degree from the University of Florida. He received his LL.M. in Taxation from Emory University in 1989. Ron was a member of our firm for over 20 years.

Ron will be missed by all of his colleagues and clients. His courage and eternal optimism during his battle with cancer remain an inspiration to us all.

STEVE O'DAY PAYS TRIBUTE TO OGDEN DOREMUS
Issue of The Daily Report the head of Smith, Gambrell & Russell's environmental law practice paid tribute to Ogden Doremus, arguably the most important environmental advocate in Georgia's history. Judge Doremus died on April 4. Steve was invited by the Daily Report to author this tribute because of his relationship with Judge Doremus, as well as his ongoing leadership in Georgia environmental law, including the important Cumberland Harbor case currently pending before the Georgia Court of Appeals. K&L Gates’ Josefina McEvoy Named First Female Vice President of International Affairs for American Bankruptcy Institute
Josefina Fernandez McEvoy—a partner in the Los Angeles office of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis LLP (K&L Gates)—has been named the Vice President of International Affairs for the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI), the largest multi-disciplinary, non-partisan organization dedicated to research and education on matters related to insolvency. McEvoy is the first woman to hold this position.

In her role as vice president, McEvoy will focus on increasing ABI’s foreign membership and enhancing its internal foreign relations, all with an emphasis on Latin America, Asia and Europe. McEvoy has been a member of the institute for more than 10 years, serving on its executive committee and board of directors, and has been at the forefront of its recent international activities.

At K&L Gates, McEvoy advises debtors, creditors, equity holders, investors and municipalities in connection with domestic and cross-border Chapter 11 reorganizations, business bankruptcies, corporate restructurings, bankruptcy-related acquisitions, out-of-court workouts and bankruptcy litigation.

Mc Evoy commented: “My longtime work with ABI has allowed me to contribute to a number of initiatives that have helped to improve the bankruptcy system in the U.S. and abroad. I look forward to serving the institute as its vice president of international affairs as we continue to make positive changes in this important area of law.”

Paul W. Sweeney Jr., administrative partner of K&L Gates’ Los Angeles office and chair of the firm’s diversity committee, said: “We applaud Josefina’s professional accomplishments and are proud to support her in her pioneering role as ABI’s first female vice president of International Affairs.

Porter Wright announces new partners.
Andrew Bojko and Robert Edmund were recently named partners at Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP. "Our new partners have earned our respect and confidence," said Managing Partner Robert "Buzz" Trafford, "and it is with great pride that we elevate them to partnership."

Andrew M. Bojko practices in the areas of finance and commerce, financial institutions, mergers and acquisitions, and real estate. He works with lenders and borrowers in matters involving commercial lending, asset-based financing and leveraged buyouts. He also handles a variety of real estate and corporate law matters. Mr. Bojko received his A.B. from Princeton University and his J.D. from University of Notre Dame Law School, where he was an editor of the Notre Dame Law Review. He is a member of the Columbus, Ohio State, and American Bar Associations.

Robert W. Edmund counsels public and private sector employers on a wide range of employment-related issues, including arbitration agreements, FMLA compliance, drug testing, public accommodations, employee discipline and terminations, workforce reductions, severance agreements, wage and hour matters, and union organizing campaigns. He also has substantial experience defending discrimination suits, labor arbitrations, unfair labor practice charges, defamation suits, and a variety of wrongful discharge claims. Mr. Edmund received his B.A. degree, summa cum laude, from The Ohio State University, and his law degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School. He is a member of the Ohio State, Columbus, American, and Federal Bar ASssociations as well as the Florida Bar. Currently, he is chair of the Columbus Bar Association's Labor and Employment Committee and also serves as an adjunct faculty member at Capital University Law School. Mr. Edmund is also active in the community, including the Westside-Eastside Child Care Centers Association's Board of Trustees, Ohio State's College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Alumni Society, Directions for Youth and Families, the Columbus Rotary Club, and Ohio State's Colleges of the Arts and Sciences Alumni Advisory Council.

Michael Kelly Featured in Several Publications on His Legal Representation of Former Champion Joe Frazier
Michael Kelly, an ex-boxer as well as a litigator, is featured in USA Today (April 27) and Wilmington New-Journal (April 26) articles on his legal representation of former champion Joe Frazier. He was quoted earlier by the Associated Press (April 18) and in the Washington Post and Philadelphia Inquirer (April 19).

Ric Scott Named 2007 Young Lawyer of the Year by the RBA
LeClair Ryan is pleased to announce that Richard D. Scott, an associate in the Firm's Roanoke Office, has been selected as the 2007 Young Lawyer of the Year for the Roanoke Bar Association. The 2007 Roanoke Bar Association Foundation Gala and Law Day Celebration includes honoring Scott at the event on April 28th. This the second year the award has been given and the second time a LeClair Ryan attorney has been so honored (Lori Thompson in 2006).

Scott's service to the RBA includes the Young Lawyers Committee (2001-present); assistance with planning of several Bar Association events, including Annual Golf Outing/Picnic (2002-06), Roanoke Bar Foundation Gala (2006-2007), and Santa in the Square (2006); participation in Bar Association's "Pro Bono Hotline" service with Blue Ridge Legal Services (2001-present); and the "Mock Trial" program with Roanoke City Schools (2002).

Ric is also active with the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Bar Association, the Pastoral Counseling Center of the Roanoke Valley, Inc., Colonial Avenue Baptist Church and the University of Virginia Club of the Roanoke Valley.
