FTC Chairman to Address Chicago Antitrust Lawyers
Federal Trade Commission Chairman Deborah Platt Majoras will be the featured speaker at an event hosted by the Chicago Women Antitrust Lawyers Network on Thursday, May 3rd. Bell Boyd will co-sponsor the luncheon at McCormick and Schmick's with McGuireWoods LLP.

Founded in 2005 by Bell Boyd antitrust partner Paula W. Render and Amy B. Manning, a partner at McGuireWoods LLP, the informal network provides a forum for discussion for women who practice antitrust law in Chicago. "Amy and I saw a need to interact with other professionals who share our experiences practicing antitrust law in Chicago, since so many antitrust lawyers practice in New York or Washington," said Ms. Render. "We are honored that Deborah Majoras has accepted our invitation and will share both her experience as an antitrust lawyer and as the chair of the FTC."

As FTC Chairman since 2004, Ms. Majoras has placed a strong emphasis on ensuring data security and protecting consumers from frauds, such as identity theft, spyware and deceptive spam. She has also focused on increasing the efficiency and transparency of the merger review process, implementing sound antitrust policy regarding intellectual property, increasing efforts to prevent anticompetitive government policies, and strengthening cooperation with consumer and competition agencies around the world. Prior to her government service, she was a partner in the antitrust section of Jones Day.

NEW PRO BONO PARTNER NAMED
Whiteford, Taylor & Preston (WTP) is pleased to announce that Edwin G. Fee, Jr. has been appointed as the firm's new Pro Bono Partner and will replace James F. Rosner, who has held the post for three years.

"I look forward to continuing what Jim has started at the firm. He's been responsible for a tremendous increase in WTP's pro bono activities and has been instrumental in helping other legal professionals discover the personal rewards of community service," commented Fee. "Luckily, he is staying on as a member of our Pro Bono Committee; so I will have the benefit of his experience and vision."

Like his predecessor, Fee will devote a substantial portion of his time to managing the firm's pro bono activities. In addition to mentoring other attorneys beginning their pro bono careers, he will coordinate with WTP's partnering agencies to provide legal counsel, and he will handle his own pro bono matters.

A Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, Fee is a partner in WTP's Estates and Trust group. Fee will serve on the Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA) Board of Governors from 2007-2009, and he currently is Chair of the MSBA Estate and Trust Law Section. Fee is a Life Fellow of both the Maryland Bar Foundation and the Baltimore Bar Foundation. He is also a member of The Associated Planned Giving Roundtable, the Baltimore Community Foundation Professional Advisors Council, the Baltimore Estate Planning Council, the Chesapeake Planned Giving Council, the Harriet Lane Family Council (of the Johns Hopkins Children's Center), The Park School of Baltimore Planned Giving Advisory Committee, and St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation Planned Giving Advisory Committee. He received his J.D. in 1990 and his LL.M. in Taxation in 1991 from New York University School of Law, and his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University in 1987.

Rosner, a partner in WTP's Towson office, will return fulltime to handling medical malpractice cases for the firm's growing litigation department. His national and regional clients include: hospitals, physicians, dentists, HMOs, physician practice groups, nurses, mental health counselors, nursing homes, and continuing care retirement communities.

Aaron Milrad to chair Art Selection Committee for McMurtry Gardens of Justice
Retiring Ontario Chief Justice Roy McMurtry is being honoured with a sculpture garden in his name between the Toronto courthouse and Osgoode Hall. The McMurtry Gardens of Justice will celebrate the rule of law and the administration of justice in Ontario. FMC is a financial supporter of the gardens.

The first sculpture to be installed is by Edwina Sandys, noted sculptor and granddaughter of Sir Winston Churchill. Representing her in her contract with Law Gardens Incorporated, the company running the venture, was FMC’s art expert and IP lawyer, Aaron Milrad. The president of Law Gardens Inc., Toronto businessman Seymour Epstein, was so impressed with Aaron’s expertise that he promptly made him chair of the selection committee for the other sculptures to be installed.
