Rachel S. Zahniser Selected for Unique Leadership Development Program
Focus on the future. That is what Taft, Stettinius & Hollister LLP and Rachel S. Zahniser, an associate in the firm's Labor and Employment department, are doing. Ms. Zahniser has been selected to participate in the Women Executive Peer Exchange Network, a peer-to-peer learning forum developed for high potential professional women – those who typically have been in the workplace 5-10 years. This program is unique in the country.

The program's purpose is to help these high potential women accelerate their progress by providing them with an opportunity to be part of an intensive leadership development program which includes a 360 leadership assessment and an individual development plan that expands to reflect the on-going training. A key component that adds richness and uniqueness to the program is the opportunity for participants to meet with senior level female executives, known as Mustang Sallies. These women, from WEPEN member companies, share their stories, wisdom, insights and inspiration with the high potential women. The Mustang from Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP is Paige L. Ellerman, an associate in the Business and Finance department.

The training relies on a humanities-based curriculum with explicit application to the workplace. Participants meet every other month over an 18-month span, and then have the opportunity to stay connected through various activities that invite, but don't require, their continued participation. WEPEN has adopted the tagline "See Jane Soar" to indicate the program's mission to take Ms. Zahniser to the highest levels of her potential. Or maybe we should say, See Rachel Soar!

The program is developed and administered by The Peer Exchange Network™ (PEN), a successful peer-to-peer learning model that was designed and implemented in 1995. The program is designed to give “hands-on value” by creating a forum for exchanging ideas, experiences and information. Over the past 12 years PEN programs have been conducted for all levels of peers in the public and private sectors, from CEOs and senior level executives to public school principals. The WEPEN programming is expanding nationally.

SQUIRE SANDERS HONORED BY LAWYERS FOR CHILDREN AMERICA, INC.
Lawyers for Children America, Inc. (LFCA), a national organization which provides quality pro bono representation to abused children, recognized Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. for its ongoing support of LFCA’s Miami chapter by presenting the firm with the John Edward Smith Child Advocacy Award on April 20.

The award, given to law firms that have demonstrated ongoing support of LFCA’s mission, is named for the late John Edward Smith, a longtime lawyer with Steel Hector & Davis LLP and the founder of LFCA-Miami. Squire Sanders continues to provide a home and other in-kind support such as supplies, phone service, computers and additional work space.

“Squire, Sanders & Dempsey is the backbone of LFCA’s Miami program,” said Daleta Christensen, LFCA-Miami program director.

“The firm is proud to honor John Edward Smith’s legacy through its continued support of the important work that LFCA does on behalf of our community’s children,” said Alvin Davis, managing partner of the firm’s Miami office.

Howrey LLP wins Global Patent Law Firm of the Year award for the third consecutive year
Howrey LLP has been named global Patent Law Firm of the Year 2007 in the Who’s Who Legal Awards. This is the third consecutive time the firm has been recognised in this way, having won the award every year since its inception in 2005.

With the benefit of more than ten years of independent research, Who’s Who Legal used the thousands of nominations it has received from clients and private practice professionals to pick out the pre-eminent lawyer and firm in 27 practice areas. The winners were formally announced in The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers 2007, a compendium edition of all the individual Who’s Who Legal publications which was released in April.

Editor in chief Callum Campbell said: “It is an outstanding achievement to win the Who’s Who Legal; The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers Patent Law Firm of the Year Award for a third consecutive time. Howrey’s continuing success demonstrates its consistent and unparalleled level of individual and collective talent in this field. We have no hesitation in declaring Howrey the world’s leading firm for patent expertise”.

Who’s Who Legal lists only the leading practitioners in each field, based exclusively on the findings of a six month independent research process. Thirteen partners from the firm across seven countries and three US states received sufficient nominations from their clients and peers to be included in the Patent chapter of the publication, and Howrey has more practitioners included in the chapter than any other firm.

A list of the Howrey lawyers included in the Patent chapter accompanies this release.

The awards are based on a number of factors, including the feedback received in the ongoing research process, past performance in the research and the overall aggregate number of weighted votes cast in their favour. In addition to identifying the leading firm and individual in each practice area, the awards also recognise the overall leading firm in 48 countries and five US states. The book is distributed free of charge to thousands of corporate counsel and private-practice lawyers from around the world. The information is also available without charge on www.WhosWhoLegal.com and is updated on a daily basis.

In 2006, Who’s Who Legal’s parent company Law Business Research was recognised by The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in the area of international trade, having demonstrated significant growth in overseas earnings and commercial success. These awards are the most prestigious a British company can receive, and are made annually by the Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister, assisted by an advisory committee drawn from government, industry and commerce and the trade unions. In addition, Who’s Who Legal is also the official research partner of the International Bar Association.
