Hartford Bar Awards McCarter & English 2007 Pro Bono Prize for James Tillman
The Hartford County Bar Association presented its 2007 Pro Bono Award to McCarter & English, LLP and retired Chief Public Defender Gerard A. Smyth for their work exonerating James Tillman, wrongly imprisoned for over 18 years, and helping him build a new life.

The award, conferred at Law Day ceremonies yesterday at Hartford Superior Court, recognized both McCarter & English's hosting of the Connecticut Innocence Project and its legal and other support of Mr. Tillman, before and since his release last June. The Firm has been broadly committed to assisting the Project in its mission to aid indigent individuals who are convicted of crimes for which they are innocent, providing office space, furnishings and administrative support to public defenders, like Mr. Smyth, who volunteer their services.

"Important as the Innocence Project's work is, we believe that exoneration is not enough for people like Mr. Tillman, who was faced with starting over with essentially no resources after being robbed of 18-1/2 years of his life," said Timothy Fisher, a partner at McCarter & English. "For that reason, McCarter & English, in particular Tiffany Stevens, has focused on raising funds to help him back on his feet and assembled a team of professionals to help him manage and invest contributions he receives."

Beyond fundraising, the lawyers spearheaded a drive in the Connecticut State Legislature to provide Mr. Tillman with between $3.5 and $5 million compensation for his wrongful imprisonment in exchange for a release of claims against the State. This legislation was unanimously approved recently by the Joint Committee on Judiciary and continues through the legislative process this spring.

Note: Private contributions for Mr. Tillman are still being solicited and may be sent to McCarter & English, LLP, CityPlace I, 185 Asylum Street, Hartford, CT 06103-3495, Attention: James Tillman Fund. Checks should be made payable to "Merrill Lynch for the benefit of James Tillman" or "Merrill Lynch f/b/o James Tillman." This contribution will be treated as a gift to Mr. Tillman and it will not be eligible for any deduction on your personal
or corporate income tax return.
