Cadwalader Nominated for Law Firm of the Year by Institutional Investor
Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP was nominated by Institutional Investor for a 2007 Global Derivatives and European Securitization Award as Law Firm of the Year. Cadwalader was one of four firms tapped for this prestigious honor that recognizes the people and deals that made an impact on the global derivatives and European securitization markets during the year.

In addition, Cadwalader was counsel on the Anthracite Capital Europe CDO 2006-1 transaction that was nominated for CDO Deal of the Year.

These nominations are just the latest in a series of capital markets accolades to be bestowed on the firm. Earlier this year, Cadwalader won its second straight Law Firm of the Year honor at the U.S. Securitization Awards. Before that, the firm was named Securitization and Structured Finance Team of the Year, and the novel WITS hybrid securities transaction was named Debt and Equity-Linked Deal of the Year, at the IFLR Americas Awards. That recognition came on the heels of the IFLR European Awards for Structured Products Team of the Year and Deal of the Year in the Structured Products and Restructuring categories.

The winners of the 2007 Global Derivatives Awards and European Securitization Awards will be announced on Wednesday, November 28, 2007, at a gala dinner and ceremony at the Millennium Hotel, Mayfair in London.

“I am exceptionally pleased that the Capital Markets Department has been recognized yet again as a leader in the field,” said Robert O. Link Jr., Cadwalader's chairman and managing partner. “I am proud of the hard work and innovation shown by our attorneys, and the way in which the London and U.S. offices collaborate to meet the needs of the firm’s clients,” Link added.

Thacher Proffitt and VOICES of September 11th Announce Their Collaboration on the 9/11 Living Memorial
Thacher Proffitt & Wood LLP, a 158-year-old law firm that formerly occupied three floors in 2 World Trade Center, and VOICES of September 11th announced today their collaboration on the "WTC Corporations" section of the 9/11 Living Memorial, a permanent, web-based digital archive.

Thacher Proffitt (the Firm) is the first company to contribute its story to the "WTC Corporations" section of the 9/11 Living Memorial, which is divided into five primary topics:

1. Recovery -- Includes "day one" communications and tracking the whereabouts of staff;
2. Rebuild -- Includes outreach to key constituents and notes from the Firm's "disaster and recovery" speaking engagements;
3. Remembrance -- Includes messages from friends and family, as well as personal stories;
4. Press coverage -- Includes an itemization of media coverage about Thacher Proffitt following 9/11; and
5. Coming home -- Includes informational and related materials surrounding Thacher Proffitt's return to lower Manhattan.

The Firm intends to add information to its story as additional materials become available.

In addition, the Firm's Technology and Intellectual Property Group, led by partner, Leonard T. Nuara, is providing pro bono legal services to VOICES of September 11th.

Former Chairman (1991 to 2003) and partner Omer "Jack" Williams who is coordinating the Firm's participation in the project, said, "Thacher Proffitt was fortunate in that our attorneys and staff were all accounted for following the tragedy on September 11th, although many of us lost colleagues and friends in the event. Our attorneys and staff performed incredibly in our rebuilding effort. Our participation in the 9/11 Living Memorial and our collaboration with Frank and Mary Fetchet and the staff of VOICES of September 11th is an attempt to illuminate how we endured this time in our history through recovery, rebuilding and remembrance, and to commemorate these efforts." He added, "I would encourage each company impacted by 9/11 also to consider sharing its unique story."

Current Chairman and partner, Paul D. Tvetenstrand added, "From the earliest days of our post 9/11 recovery to the momentous occasion of our return downtown our story will hopefully provide insight and inspiration for years to come."

Mary Fetchet, a founding director of VOICES of September 11th and its 9/11 Living Memorial, stated, "VOICES welcomes Thacher Proffitt's participation and corporate leadership in developing content for the 9/11 Living Memorial digital archive. Documenting the first-hand experiences of corporations impacted by 9/11 is crucial if we are to have a comprehensive Living Memorial that preserves the lives and stories of September 11th, 2001 for future generations."

About the 9/11 Living Memorial Project

The 9/11 Living Memorial, www.911livingmemorial.org, is a permanent, web-based digital archive commemorating the lives and stories of September 11, 2001 and the February 26, 1993 WTC bombing. The site will eventually be incorporated into the planned National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center as a core component of the Museum's digital resource center and will be available to the Library of Congress, the National Archive, and thousands of memorial sites and charitable foundations built worldwide.

The 9/11 Living Memorial strives to provide a comprehensive living history by drawing together personal experiences and reflections as well as collective experiences from those affected by the attacks in New York City, Shanksville, PA and Washington, DC. The "Family Tributes" section, created by family, friends and colleagues, will host tributes to the nearly 3,000 victims including biographical profiles, photographs, eulogies, the New York Times Portraits of Grief, streaming video and audio accounts. The site will document the response of the hundreds of corporations that were impacted, with stories of those who survived and how they memorialized their colleagues. Remembrances of the victims and survivors of the 1993 WTC bombing and the rescue workers who have succumbed to 9/11-related illnesses will also be included.

Over the next three years VOICES will reach out to the thousands of 9/11 family members, survivors, first responders, companies/organizations and others in the United States and abroad to build this comprehensive, digital archive. A multimedia outreach campaign - including mailings, internet marketing, and nationwide and international workshops will be conducted, as well as the annual September 10th Commemorative workshop held in New York City. Professional staff are assisting families, rescue workers and survivors to organize commemorative keepsakes, photographs and write personal tributes. State-of-the-art technology will be used to effectively digitize, archive multidimensional content.

Carter Phillips Named First Recipient of Lewis F. Powell Award for Business Advocacy
Carter Phillips received the inaugural Lewis F. Powell Award for Business Advocacy given by the National Chamber Litigation Center (NCLC), the public policy law firm of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, at its 30th anniversary gala reception and dinner on Monday, September 10th. Phillips, head of Sidley’s Appellate Practice and a long-time supporter of the Litigation Center, was the night’s honoree. The Honorable Paul D. Clement, Solicitor General of the United States, was the keynote speaker.

The Lewis F. Powell Award for Business Advocacy, which will periodically be bestowed on an individual or corporation that best exemplifies a commitment to improving the litigation environment for the business community, is named in honor of Justice Powell, who played a critical role in the formation of the National Chamber Litigation Center.

“I am humbled by this recognition,” said Phillips. “The Chamber is such a responsible voice for the business community and the idea of receiving an award in the name of a Justice for whom I have the highest regard and respect is an honor that touches me deeply.”

Robin Conrad, Executive Vice President of the National Chamber Litigation Center said, “As a long-time friend of the business community and a champion of a wide array of important business issues, Carter is a perfect choice for this award. It is a great honor for us to present him with the first Lewis F. Powell Award for Business Advocacy.”

NCLC plays a major role in shaping public policy on issues of national concern to American business while achieving long-range improvements in the legal system. Over its 30 year history, NCLC has initiated landmark cases on issues as diverse as striker replacement, corporate free speech, and overreaching environmental and corporate governance regulations and is particularly renowned for its work reining in abusive class actions and excessive punitive damages.

Since joining Sidley, Phillips has argued 45 cases before the Supreme Court, for a career total of 54 appearances, as well as numerous cases in the courts of appeals. He served as a law clerk to both Judge Robert Sprecher on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and Chief Justice Warren E. Burger on the United States Supreme Court. Prior to joining Sidley, Mr. Phillips served as Assistant to the Solicitor General for three years, during which time he argued nine cases on behalf of the federal government in the United States Supreme Court. In 2006, Phillips was named one of the “Top 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America” as chosen by The National Law Journal. The NLJ also named him a runner-up for its 2006 "Lawyer of the Year", saying that in 2006 he “became the 'go-to' attorney for corporations seeking Supreme Court relief, further elevating his stature within the small, but highly skilled, Supreme Court bar."
