Manatt Receives Commendation From Senator Ridley-Thomas For Support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Manatt Counsel Phyllis Marshall was presented with a resolution by Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas (D - Los Angeles) acknowledging Manatt's and her time investment and financial support of a college tour of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. A group of high school students from the Elk Grove School System in Sacramento, California, would not otherwise be able to afford the trip to visit colleges around the country.

"I laud the efforts made by the United College Action Network, the Elk Grove Unified School District, and the Law Firm of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, for their efforts in assuring California graduating seniors are afforded the opportunity to pursue a college degree in such a unique academic setting," Senator Ridley-Thomas said. "These are talented young people, many of whom will make significant contributions upon returning to their communities. Thank God for the HBCU's and the role they continue to play in providing meaningful college experiences for thousands of aspiring students."

Manatt's support is part of its Manatt Empowering California Youth program, a sister program, Manatt Empowering DC Youth, recently partnered with the Jumpstart Coalition in Washington, D.C. to tutor high school students in financial responsibility.

"We at Manatt are committed to helping tomorrow's leaders to pursue their dreams through our association with the Historically Black College Tour. Elk Grove USD and our historically black colleges are doing important work fostering the values of excellence, integrity, respect, accountability, and individuality. There are the very same values we embrace at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, said William T. Quicksilver, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Partner of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP.

Fulbright’s Helen Duncan Named One of California’s Top Women Litigators
"Fulbright & Jaworski partner Helen Duncan has been chosen as one of the Top Women Litigators in California by the Daily Journal Corporation.

Duncan was honored at a special reception this week at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles.

“Helen is an accomplished litigator and one of the few attorneys who has seen a class action suit to jury verdict,” said Peter Mason, who is the head of Fulbright’s Los Angeles location. “We are very proud of Helen being named one of the Top Women Litigators in California. It is a reflection of her outstanding handling of contentious and complex matters and her remarkable leadership abilities.”

After receiving nominations from attorneys across the state, the Daily Journal editorial board whittled the entries down to a list of 77 Top Women Litigators based on the attorney’s body of litigation work in 2006. The list was published as a supplement in the Los Angeles Daily Journal, San Francisco Daily Journal and Daily Journal’s Daily Recorder in Sacramento.

One of Duncan’s successes in 2006 involved sub-prime mortgage lending. As lead trial counsel and appellate counsel for a global investment bank, she preserved a defense verdict against claims for nearly $500 million while obtaining reversal of a $5.1 million jury verdict in a class action. The plaintiffs originally sought more than $1 billion in compensatory damages. The case had significant impact on California business and legal community as it clarified a variety of issues affecting financial institutions’ potential liability in providing financing and securitization services for mortgage lenders.
Duncan, who heads the litigation department in Fulbright’s Los Angeles office, began her career with the U.S. Department of Justice and is a charter member and past president of the George McBurney Los Angeles Complex Litigation Inn of Court. She was listed as one of The Best Lawyers in America in 2005-2007 and listed in the Guide to Leading U.S. Litigation Lawyers in 2005 and 2006. She also was identified as one of America’s Leading Lawyers for Business in Chambers USA in 2006.

With a concentration on complex business litigation, she focuses primarily on securities, insurance insolvency, tax, and class action litigation. Duncanis skilled at translating complex legal and business concepts. She has both brought or defended various types of fraud actions involving the biotech, financial services and insurance industries. Currently, Duncanis lead national counsel in various tax shelter-related litigation involving both class and individual actions.

Duncan received a J.D. from Southwestern University School of Law and a B.A. in psychology and forensic studies at Indiana University."
