Greenberg Traurig Shareholder Paul D'Arelli is First Florida-Based Attorney to be Certified as a Leed Accredited Professional
Paul D’Arelli, a shareholder with the international law firm of Greenberg Traurig, has been certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP) by the U.S. Green Building Council (USBGC). The first and only Florida- based attorney with this designation in the USBGC website directory of LEED APs, D’Arelli joins only a handful of attorneys nationwide who have recognized the significance of “green” building trends on the future of the building industry and have responded by getting certified.

“As a LEED AP, Paul will be able to assist clients and the development team in evaluating and navigating the LEED certification process, as well as advise clients on rapidly emerging incentive-based and mandatory regulatory requirements pertaining to green building,” said Debbie Orshefsky, Chair of the firm’s National Land Development Practice Group and a shareholder in the firm’s Fort Lauderdale office. “His certification reinforces Greenberg Traurig’s commitment to continually expand the universe of legal services offered in order to keep pace with clients' varied needs and industry trends.“

With D’Arelli’s LEED AP designation, Greenberg Traurig's clients will be able to earn one point toward LEED Certification for their projects, if a LEED AP is not otherwise on the project team. The LEED Green Building Rating System? is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

D’Arelli is a shareholder in Greenberg Traurig’s Fort Lauderdale office and has more than 10 years of experience in complex mixed-use redevelopment; Developments of Regional Impact (DRIs); land use plan amendments; platting, zoning and site plan approvals; variances; and land use due diligence. He is also a licensed general contractor with a background in residential development.

D’Arelli received his B.S. degree, magna cum laude, from California Polytechnic State University in 1988, his J.D. from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in 1995, and his LL.M. degree in Real Property Development from the University of Miami School of Law in 1996. He is a resident of Plantation, Fla.

DLA Piper’s Levin named 2006-2007 Distinguished Maryland Real Property Practitioner
DLA Piper US LLP has announced that Edward J. Levin, partner in the firm’s Real Estate practice group in the Baltimore office, has been named the 2006-2007 Distinguished Maryland Real Property Practitioner by the Maryland State Bar Association’s (MSBA) Section Council of the Section of Real Property, Planning and Zoning. He will be honored at the section’s annual meeting June 15.

Each year, the Section Council of the Section of Real Property, Planning and Zoning accepts nominations from MSBA and section members. Award recipients are chosen based on their experience practicing real property law, their contributions to improving real property practice, and their personal, professional and academic accomplishments.

Levin is past chairman of the Section of Real Property, Planning and Zoning and served as co-chairman of the Special Joint Committee on Lawyers’ Opinions in Commercial Transactions of the MSBA and The Bar Association of Baltimore City. He is currently a member of the Steering Committee of the Section of Business Law and the Section of Real Property, Planning and Zoning’s Joint Committee, which is now finishing its Report on Lawyers’ Opinions in Business Transactions, an update of the 1989 edition developed during Levin’s tenure as co-chair. He chaired the Section of Real Property, Planning and Zoning’s Legislation Committee and continues to serve on the committee. He was the primary drafter and proponent of a section-sponsored bill that was recently passed by the Maryland General Assembly amending the rule against perpetuities as it applies to commercial transactions.

“Ed is a lawyer’s lawyer and we are pleased that the MSBA has recognized what we, his colleagues, and his clients already know about him,” said DLA Piper’s Baltimore Managing Partner Paul A. Tiburzi. “His dedication to the MSBA as well as numerous organizations throughout the Baltimore area is inspiring. Ed is both an extraordinary attorney and person, and we all congratulate him on this much-deserved honor.”

In addition to working with the MSBA, Levin was one of the organizers of the award-winning Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers, Inc.’s (MICPEL) Advanced Real Property Institute. He co-chaired the first two institutes in 1990 and 1991, and since then he has served as a faculty member and member of the program committee.

He is also a member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL) and was chair of ACREL’s Attorneys’ Opinions Committee from 1993 through 1999. Levin served as a member of the steering committee of the combined American Bar Association (ABA) and ACREL project on guidelines for attorneys’ opinions in real estate secured transactions. He now serves as vice chair of the ABA’s Legal Opinions in Real Estate Transactions Committee of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section.

In 2004, Levin was selected Mortgage Associate of the Year by the Maryland Mortgage Bankers Association, where he has served as counsel since 1995. He is also a fellow of the American Bar Foundation.

A frequent lecturer and author, Levin is co-author, with Charles T. Albert, of Maryland Real Estate Leasing Forms—Practice and is the author of articles in Probate and Property relating to opinion letters. He has spoken at MICPEL seminars and at meetings of ACREL, the ABA and the MSBA on topics including leasing, financing, land banking, title insurance, workouts and impact fees.

Levin is listed in The Best Lawyers in America, Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, and as one of the Top 50 Maryland Super Lawyers of 2007.

He received a J.D. from the University of Virginia and a B.A., with honors, from the Johns Hopkins University.
