DLA Piper named Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year
DLA Piper US LLP has been named the 2007 Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year by the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program (SDVLP). The firm was recognized for its many contributions to SDVLP’s pro bono clinics, programs and cases, most notably a case where attorneys helped obtain disability services for a girl in foster care. The case was assisted by two attorneys in the firm’s Los Angeles office and put the firm over the top in pro bono hours.

“Pro bono and community involvement is ingrained in DLA Piper’s culture, and San Diego is fully a part of that culture,” said Renee Glover Chantler, West Coast Pro Bono Manager for DLA Piper. “We are proud to be recognized for our civic contributions to the San Diego community as we have worked hard to implement several new initiatives to increase participation in pro bono work. We look forward to continuing to provide broad support and commitment to SDVLP and advancing its mission in San Diego.”

SDVLP is the county's oldest and largest pro bono legal services program and serves the most vulnerable members of the community including the homeless, abused children, domestic violence victims, elder abuse victims, veterans, immigrants and HIV/AIDS sufferers who are unable to afford appropriate legal representation.

“DLA Piper’s San Diego attorneys are determined to make a difference in the place where they live and work, and they are proving it with their determination and generous actions,” said Michael S. Tracy, managing partner of DLA Piper’s San Diego office. “These pro bono efforts have also taken place across the country and around the world, a sign of DLA Piper’s global leadership role among law firms committed to pro bono causes.”

DLA Piper will be recognized at SDVLP’s Justice for All Dinner, an annual celebration to recognize the outstanding pro bono contributions of its volunteer law firms, lawyers and others on Tuesday, June 19 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina.

Growing Pro Bono Commitment

In 2006, both of the firm’s San Diego offices devoted a total of 11,569 hours to pro bono legal service, up from 6,266 in 2005--an increase of more than 84%. This commitment to pro bono work also amounted to 4.29% of the San Diego lawyers’ billable time.

Across the US, DLA Piper logged more than 109,000 pro bono hours in 2006, a 30% increase over 2005. The percentage of the firm’s lawyers who worked 20 hours or more rose to exceed 85 percent; in 2005, 63 percent gave 20 hours or more to pro bono work.

In October, DLA Piper announced the launch of its newest pro bono signature project, Access to Education, an ambitious undertaking to address the needs of low-income preschool- and school-age children in New York City. The Access to Education project, a partnership with other leading New York City organizations, is the first of its kind to address these issues through a multidisciplinary team approach. The partnership includes a unique pro bono engagement with client PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP that will pair DLA Piper attorneys with PwC executives to advise individual Head Start programs on key transactional, compliance and real estate matters. The firm will dedicate 5,000 attorney hours to the project, an approximately $2 million commitment.

Dykema Wins Livonia Sign Ordinance Pro Bono Case
Dykema, a premier Midwest law firm, successfully represented pro bono client Joseph Marras, in a motion to dismiss charges by the City of Livonia for violating Livonia’s sign ordinance.

"We are proud our team had the privilege to offer quality pro bono legal services to successfully defend our client’s constitutional right to free speech," said Cara J. Edwards Heflin, an associate in Dykema’s litigation practice and leader of the team that represented Joseph Marras. "We are very pleased with the Judge’s decision that our client did not violate the city’s ordinance."

Joseph Marras of Marras Music & Lessons was cited in December with a misdemeanor violation for displaying a portable sign, after he hired a local high school student to dress in a Santa Claus costume to advertise holiday sales on the sidewalk in front of his store. The City argued that Marras had encroached on a public right-of-way with the sign.

In the 16th District Court, attorney Cara J. Edwards Heflin of Dykema argued that the right-of-way in front of Marra’s store was vague because it was identified as 100-120 feet wide, which may or may not include the sidewalk where Santa Claus stood holding the sign. More importantly it was noted that within Livonia’s sign ordinance their definition of "sign" is limited as it does not include something held on the person. Heflin concluded arguments stating that the ordinance did not clearly prohibit Marras’ activity, whether or not it was in the public right-of way.

Judge Robert B. Brzezinski agreed to Heflin’s arguments that the City of Livonia’s ordinance did not apply to a person holding a sign, and dismissed the charges against Joseph Marras.

Debevoise & Plimpton LLP Launches New Legal Advice Clinic for Social Entrepreneurs in Collaboration with Unltd
Debevoise & Plimpton LLP is pleased to announce an innovative new legal advice clinic for social entrepreneurs in collaboration with UnLtd and pro bono charity LawWorks.

UnLtd, the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs, provides funding and support to social entrepreneurs. Its mission is to “reach out and unleash the energies of people who can transform the world in which they live”. Many of UnLtd’s Award Winners are establishing small charities, community projects and businesses with social aims.

The legal clinic provided by Debevoise offers UnLtd’s award winners legal advice on topics such as charity, company and contract law, with most clients to date requiring advice on the most appropriate legal structure for their projects. Clients meet a Debevoise lawyer at UnLtd’s office to discuss their issue, and are then provided with written advice on their query.

Geoff Burgess, partner at Debevoise, commented, “We are delighted to have got this project off the ground. Pro bono work is a very important part of the culture at Debevoise and our lawyers in London told us that they wanted to provide transactional legal advice to non-profit organisations. We are thus very fortunate to have the chance to work with the award recipients of such an innovative and dynamic organisation as UnLtd. We are committed to continuing to expand our pro bono programme in London, and are looking forward to seeing more opportunities opening up to us following the appointment of Florence Brocklesby, our dedicated pro bono manager for Europe, in September.”

Cliff Prior, UnLtd’s chief executive, commented, “Demand for the clinic has been very high, as so many social entrepreneurs need advice on issues such as the best legal structure for their projects or drafting contracts with third parties. Many of our award winners are in the very early stages of developing their projects, and simply could not afford to pay lawyers. Having access to free legal advice helps them to move their projects forward, and the feedback from our award winners has been extremely positive.”

Rebecca Wilkie, Clinics project manager at LawWorks, commented, “This is an innovative project as, unlike most other legal advice clinics, which help members of the public, it provides much needed corporate and transactional advice to social entrepreneurs. The clinic has been very well received, and we are now hoping to expand the project to UnLtd’s regional offices.
