Riley's Remarks at Diversity Conference Challenge the Legal Industry
In a presentation to attorneys and business leaders, Peter J. Riley challenged executives to embrace diversity and inclusion initiatives and empower others to act on that vision. Speaking at the Law Firm Diversity Summit of the Texas Diversity and Leadership Conference on May 15, the managing partner of Thompson & Knight LLP urged businesses to realize the changing demands of clients, while recognizing that progress in diversity is likely going to be incremental.

"In our world, clients are pressing for diverse work teams, increasing the urgency to incorporate diversity and inclusion as part of our culture," Riley said. "But success will be a process of focused, hard work, not just bold declarations."
Riley noted that the Firm has long been recognized as a leader in the number of female partners, perennially among the top 10 percent of U.S. law firms and recognized by clients for diversity efforts. He warned that such success led to complacency, and that only in the last few years did the Firm's management realize that more was required.

"Our organization is engaged in a war for talent, and we don't have the luxury of excluding or not developing anyone based on an arbitrary or historical bias," Riley said. "The talent pool of qualified women, ethnic minorities, and other diverse lawyers is immense, and we need to dispel the myth that the pool is not deep."

During the past year Thompson & Knight hired Pauline E. Higgins, an attorney and nationally known authority on implementing and improving diversity within service organizations. A coalition of focused teams, many led by white males, are guiding the Firm's efforts while maintaining long time standards of outstanding lawyer quality and client service. Riley said that perhaps the most difficult challenge for any coalition leading diversity is creating an environment of trust where views can be heard, recognized, and valued.

Riley encouraged executives to remove or alter structures or individuals that are undermining diversity efforts, focus on active mentoring systems and meaningful work assignments, and recognize and reward those people who contribute to the process. Above all, Riley said that diversity and inclusion is not an abstract theory or concept.

"This is about dignity and respect, and positively affecting the lives of your employees, your clients, and your community. An environment of mutual respect and the freedom to use God-given gifts without biased judgment is beyond powerful.
