John Sier wins ESD’s Distinguished Service Award
The Engineering Society of Detroit has announced that John Sier is the winner of its annual Distinguished Service Award, for his dedicated service to the organization.

The ESD exists to promote and celebrate excellence, innovation, cooperation, professional growth and fellowship in the engineering, scientific and allied professions.

The award will be presented to John Sier at the ESD’s annual awards dinner on June 21, 2007.

KEMP KLEIN LAW FIRM CONTINUES GROWTH & INNOVATION
Business, Estate Planning and Tax Attorney Andrew J. Goldberg joined Kemp Klein Law Firm as a shareholder on April 23, 2007. Also a trained certified public accountant, Goldberg is frequently involved in matters where legal, accounting and business issues intersect.

Goldberg assists business clients with a variety of matters, including: business formation, mergers and acquisitions, corporate dissolution, business exit planning, taxation and general contract matters.

In his estate planning practice, Goldberg helps clients make major life choices, handle special family issues, preserve and transfer wealth and minimize taxes. He is skilled at identifying and achieving each client’s unique goals.

Goldberg is an accomplished author and lecturer, often conducting seminars on estate and business planning for accountants, financial planners and other service professionals. He is a member of the Business Law section of the State Bar of Michigan, the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. A resident of West Bloomfield, Goldberg earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan and his Bachelor of Science in accounting from Indiana University.

MAY HONORED FOR 40 YEARS OF SERVICE
Alan A. May will be awarded for 40 years of service to the legal profession at the Oakland County Bar Association’s annual meeting on June 13th.

“Alan has set an example for all attorneys that have worked with him throughout his 40 years of practice,” said Chief Executive Officer Ralph Castelli, Jr. “He is highly respected by his colleagues, clients and business partners.”

May is well known for his guardianship and conservatorship expertise as well as his excellence in probate litigation, probate administration, and estate planning work throughout the area, as recognized by the OCBA.

May has been a Special Assistant Attorney General in Michigan since 1971, and is a Wayne County Public Administrator. He has been a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Board of the Detroit Regional National Conference for Community and Justice since 1979. May formerly served as the President for both the Detroit Regional and the National Conferences for Community and Justice, as well as Chairperson of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. He currently lives with his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth, in Bloomfield Hills.

Kaufman & Canoles Closes New Hampshire Deal
KAUFMAN & CANOLES is pleased to announce that its Norfolk commercial section, led by John Reed, spearheaded and managed the simultaneous closing of a private equity real estate fund and a real estate acquisition/conduit loan for Varsity Capital Advisors on a significant deal just finalized in New Hampshire. Varsity Capital Advisors acquired a thirteen-building student housing portfolio at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, New Hampshire. Varsity Durham, LLC paid approximately $20.2 million to Sumner Properties for the largest privately held student housing portfolio in the New England college town. Varsity Capital Advisors, with offices in Boston and Reston, Virginia, invests in and develops commercial real estate located in university communities.

Continuing Legal Education: Comstock on Real Property
Evansville Bar Association member Allison Comstock conducted a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminar in April on the topic of Condominiums and Planned Unit Developments. The EBA regularly presents CLE sessions to assist attorneys and other professionals in attaining continuing education requirements.

DiRienzo Nominated for Youth Workers Hall of Fame
Attorney Mike DiRienzo was among several volunteers nominated recently for induction into Southwestern Indiana’s Youth Resources Youth Worker Hall of Fame. Since its inception three years ago, Mike has been a volunteer with Youth Resources’ Vanderburgh County Teen Court program, where he helps youth attorneys understand the proper handling of evidence, how to question witnesses, and other court proceedings. Mike also has served as Teen Court judge for several hearings. Teen Court is an early-intervention/diversion program in the Vanderburgh County Juvenile Justice System offering first time youth offenders, ages 10 to17, an opportunity to get back on the right track.
