Overbeck named Global Chief Marketing Officer of DLA Piper
DLA Piper, one of the world’s leading legal service organizations with 3,400 lawyers in 24 countries, today announced the appointment of Jolene M. Overbeck to the newly created position of Global Chief Marketing Officer (CMO). In her new role, Overbeck will oversee all aspects of DLA Piper’s marketing and business development efforts worldwide. She is believed to be the only marketing professional to serve as global CMO for three of the world’s leading international law firms.

With more than 25 years of experience in legal marketing, Overbeck is one of the industry’s most experienced marketing professionals. She is known for developing strategy and structure in the marketing, business development and strategic communications programs of international law firms. She previously served as CMO at both Latham & Watkins and Shearman & Sterling. Prior to joining DLA Piper, she was a partner with the Zeughauser Group, one of the industry’s leading strategic law firm consultancies.

“Jolene is one of the most talented and highly regarded professionals in legal marketing,” said Francis B. Burch, Jr., Joint CEO of DLA Piper. “She is undoubtedly the most qualified person to lead our global marketing effort to the next level to help us achieve our vision of becoming the world’s leading global business law firm.”

Nigel Knowles, Joint CEO of DLA Piper, commented: “Jolene led marketing efforts at two leading international firms, and has the extremely rare skills and experience to position DLA Piper as the leading provider of global legal services.”

Added Lee I. Miller, Joint CEO of DLA Piper: “We want to create a brand and marketing program to help drive our ambitious business goals, and Jolene has the proven ability to execute on a global level. We couldn’t be happier having her lead this important effort.”

Overbeck served as CMO at Latham & Watkins for more than 12 years and was responsible for shaping its marketing program—a program recognized as one of the most strategic and comprehensive in the legal marketplace.

Overbeck subsequently joined Shearman & Sterling, an already established blue chip firm based in New York with a significant international platform. She restructured its marketing and business development program, implemented a global branding initiative, and focused on firmwide business development activities, including global client teams.

Peter Zeughauser, founder and managing member of the Zeughauser Group, said, “We deeply value our longstanding relationship with DLA Piper, and we are certain that Jolene will be a key player in helping them achieve new heights of success. She has enormous stature in the legal industry, and is uniquely qualified to be the first leader of DLA Piper’s global marketing team.”

Overbeck is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. She has written numerous articles on law firm marketing and is a frequent speaker at marketing symposia. She recently co-chaired American Lawyer Media’s CMO Forum.

Prominent ERISA Litigators Sacher and Miller Join Jones Day in Washington, Cementing Firm's National Leadership in High-Stakes Benefits Disputes
International law firm Jones Day today announced that prominent ERISA litigators Evan Miller and Steven J. Sacher have joined the firm as partners in its Washington office.

"Jones Day has long been a leader in finding creative solutions to our corporate clients' needs in high-stakes benefits disputes, which are becoming a common feature of large transactions," said Mary Ellen Powers, Partner-in-Charge of the Washington office. "Steve's and Evan's arrival clearly establishes our top-tier national position in this increasingly important practice area."

"As U.S. companies adjust to global competition, some need to deal assertively and creatively with run-away legacy costs," said James Baker, the San Francisco-based partner who heads Jones Day's ERISA & Other Employee Benefits Litigation practice. "Whether it's defending a bet-the-company class action, supporting post-merger plan integration, establishing plan modifications to avoid Chapter 11, or exiting it expeditiously if it can't be avoided, we have the litigation brains and brawn to handle it."

ERISA, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, regulates private sector pension, 401(k), health, and other employee benefit plans.

Mr. Miller, formerly a partner at Washington's Hogan & Hartson LLP, provides benefits counsel and litigates on behalf of companies in a variety of manners. He advises plan sponsors and administrators on ERISA's reporting and disclosure requirements, counsels health and pension plan service providers on its fiduciary duty and prohibited transaction rules, and advises private equity funds and large pension plan investors on plan assets issues. In his ERISA litigation practice, Mr. Miller represents companies in fiduciary audit and other benefit-related investigations conducted at the regional and national level by the DOL, and in excise tax matters before the IRS. In private party litigation, he has been significantly involved in stock drop litigation, fiduciary class action litigation against health plan service providers, pension and retiree health cut-back cases, and withdrawal liability matters. He is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center (J.D., 1981) and Columbia University (B.A., 1978).

Mr. Sacher, formerly a partner of Kilpatrick Stockton LLP in its Washington office, is best known for his work on complex fiduciary responsibility matters under ERISA, counseling clients, and representing them in the federal courts and before government regulators and Congressional committees. In recent years, he has handled breakthrough matters for plan sponsors and independent fiduciaries in connection with employer stock in pension, 401(k) and retiree health plans, U.S. Labor Department investigations, prohibited transaction exemptions, and benefit plan issues in bankruptcies and M&A settings. Before entering private practice, Mr. Sacher was General Counsel of the Senate Labor Committee, Special Counsel to that Committee for ERISA, Associate Solicitor of Labor (ERISA), and Executive Assistant to the Solicitor of Labor. He is holds a JD from the University of Chicago Law School and a BS from the University of Wisconsin.

Jones Day's benefits litigation practice has a long track record of successfully representing clients in virtually every type of ERISA and other employee benefit plan dispute, including nationwide class actions; pension and welfare plan terminations; individual claims for plan benefits; and enforcement actions initiated by the DOL, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, and other government agencies.

Jenner & Block Attorneys Assist 8th Grade Students in Mock Criminal Trial
A class of 8th graders from Alexander Graham Bell Elementary School in Chicago visited Jenner & Block to participate in a mock criminal trial as part of the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago’s (CRFC) Lawyers in the Classroom program, which joins attorneys with elementary classes to help students better understand the U.S. Constitution and legal system.

In the initial stages of the program, Associates Robert J. Blazejowski, Jamie B. Keating, and Andrew W. Vail visited Chicago’s Alexander Graham Bell Elementary School to instruct the 8th graders on constitutional law, the litigation process, and how to prepare for the hypothetical criminal case.

The program culminated in a mock criminal trial held at the Firm’s Chicago office in which the students served as the prosecution and defense lawyers, learning how to organize their arguments and execute them in an effective manner. The students also served as the witnesses, judges, and jurors for the trial.

Partner R. Douglas Rees served as a judge during the event while Associates Kristopher R. Kiel and Daniel C. McMurtrie joined Mr. Blazejowski and Ms. Keating in guiding the group through the stages of the trial, including helping them present evidence, cross-examine witnesses, and prepare statements to the jury.

The CRFC is a nonprofit organization that provides law-related education to Chicago-area students in order for them to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to serve their communities and nation as active, responsible citizens. The organization’s Lawyers in the Classroom program pairs attorneys with elementary school classes to help the students understand the U.S. Constitution and legal system. Jenner & Block Partners Jeffrey D. Colman, Thomas P. Sullivan, and Robert T. Markowski serve as members of CRFC’s Board of Directors.
