George Edgecomb Bar Association re-elects Julie Sneed as President

Dickinson Wright PLLC Combines with Artz & Artz to Form Intellectual Property Powerhouse
Dickinson Wright PLLC, a nationally recognized full-service law firm, announced today that it is broadening and strengthening its intellectual property practice through a combination with Southfield, Michigan-based intellectual property firm Artz & Artz. The combination is effective June 1.

The combination will make Dickinson Wright's IP practice the largest among full-service law firms in Michigan. Dickinson Wright currently has 25 attorneys, including 16 registered patent attorneys and one patent agent, each of whose principal focus is on intellectual property matters. The combination with Artz & Artz will add nine registered patent attorneys to Dickinson Wright's IP practice, bringing the total count to 34 practitioners. Dickinson Wright is also one of the only law firms nationally with its own "IP Academy," where practicing attorneys train law students with technical and engineering school undergraduate degrees to become intellectual property lawyers. There are presently 8 students in the Dickinson Wright IP Academy.

The combination with Artz & Artz will bring the number of Dickinson Wright attorneys to more than 240. Dickinson Wright has offices in Detroit, Bloomfield Hills, Ann Arbor, Lansing, Grand Rapids and Washington, D.C. The combination with Artz & Artz will expand Dickinson Wright's presence to South Bend, Indiana and Phoenix, Arizona.

SAUL EWING PARTNER ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF UNITED WAY OF GREATER
Michael J. Conlan, a Partner in Saul Ewing LLP?s Litigation Department, has been elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the United Way of Greater Mercer County (UWGMC), effective July 1, 2007. At a ceremony during the United Way?s Annual Meeting on May 8, 2007, Mr. Conlan was elected by the Board to serve as Chairman for a two-year term.

Created in 1994, the UWGMC is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of and serving the people who live and/or work in greater Mercer County.

As Chairman of the Board, Mr. Conlan will act as the lead volunteer for all UWGMC related issues, and will oversee the development of new initiatives, including financial, structural and policy decisions that guide the organization.

We are thrilled Mike has accepted this position,? said Craig E. Lafferty, President and CEO of UWGMC. ?Mike has served as a volunteer with the United Way for nearly 10 years, and he has always acted in the best interest of the organization. We are very excited and confident that he will continue to be instrumental in guiding the organization and the community.

Mr. Conlan was previously Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He has served on a number of committees at United Way, including the Resource Investment Cabinet, Grant Committee and Strategic Planning Committee. For the past year and a half, he has been Chair of the New Business Development Committee.

Mr. Conlan received his A.B. from Rutgers College and earned his J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law-Camden.

Carolyn Taggart receives 2007 Eugene R. Weir Award
Carolyn A. Taggart, a partner in the Cincinnati office of Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP, received the 2007 Eugene R. Weir Award for Ethics and Professionalism at the Ohio State Bar Association's annual convention on May 16. The Weir Award recognizes exceptional professional responsibility among Ohio lawyers.

For more than 27 years, Taggart has concentrated her practice on a wide variety of litigation matters. She has extensive trial and appellate experience in state and federal courts and has been recognized for her litigation skills via induction into the American College of Trial Lawyers. Additionally, she has received the Defense Research Institute's Exceptional Performance Award and the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys President's Award. Ms. Taggart has also been named an Ohio Super Lawyer each year since 2004. In addition to her practice as a trial attorney, Taggart is a faculty member for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy at the University of Cincinnati College of Law.

Joseph A. Spiegler Joins Much Shelist Litigation & Dispute Resolution Group as Principal
Chicago-based law firm Much Shelist announced today the addition of Joseph A. Spiegler as principal and member of the Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice group. Spiegler, who was previously a partner with Winston & Strawn in Chicago, brings to the firm significant depth in the areas of corporate compliance and internal investigations.

With a focus on complex commercial litigation, Spiegler has represented Fortune 500 corporations, publicly traded and privately held companies, partnerships and individuals in a range of matters, including antitrust, class action defense, fraud, breach of contract, RICO, intellectual property, libel and media-related cases.

“Joe brings new depth to our firm in corporate compliance and internal investigations—critical areas that increasingly affect our clients, whether public or private, large or small,” said David B. Goodman, Chair of the firm's Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice group. “Additionally, he possesses many of the qualities we value at Much Shelist, including a client-driven focus that goes beyond legal work to include big-picture strategic business counsel.”

Spiegler frequently represents corporate and individual clients in white-collar criminal matters, law enforcement actions and internal investigations. Recent matters have involved price-fixing, accounting irregularities, reporting errors, health care issues and financial fraud in response to grand jury investigations, as well as allegations of corporate wrongdoing and external fraud. He also represents clients before law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies, including the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney's Offices, and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

An accomplished trial attorney, Spiegler led the defense in one of the largest healthcare-related Civil False Claims Act cases to go to verdict. Additionally, Spiegler was a lead attorney on the team that successfully resolved one of the largest price-fixing cases on record. He has also tried a number of other fraud, breach of contract, antitrust and other types of cases in federal and state court.

Spiegler holds a J.D. degree from Notre Dame Law School, and graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. degree from New York University.

Brian W. Fields Joins Lathrop & Gage as a Member
Brian W. Fields has joined the Kansas City office of Lathrop & Gage L.C. as a member. He will focus his practice on product liability defense and intellectual property litigation. Fields comes to Lathrop & Gage from Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP and has extensive experience handling complex commercial cases.

The addition of Fields marks the fourth significant IP hire for the firm in 2007. Earlier this year, Andrew J. Sanders joined the New York office as an of-counsel attorney. Sanders held in-house counsel positions for the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC. Also in New York, the firm welcomed Dean Bierkan, who formerly oversaw the IP portfolio of H.J. Heinz Corp. And in Kansas City, seasoned IP trial Robert O. Lesley began with the firm as a member. This recent growth brings Lathrop & Gage’s IP practice to 46 attorneys nationwide, making it the largest of all Kansas City-based firms.

Fields’ commercial cases include prosecution and defense of business tort claims, contract claims and warranty claims. He has extensive experience handling products liability cases involving significant property damage and serious personal injuries and deaths. Since 1996, Fields has represented numerous pro bono clients through the Volunteer Attorney Project of Kansas City.

Fields earned his bachelor’s degree from Bradley University in 1993, and his juris doctorate from University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 1996. He is an active member of the Defense Research Institute. He is a graduate of the Bar Leadership Academy of Kansas City and a committed supporter of the Children’s Center For the Visually Impaired.
