Campbell is recognized for his dedication to the Arlington community for many years, having served as the Arlington County Board’s Chairman twice. Williams Mullen and Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity Announce Partnership
Williams Mullen, Virginia's third largest law firm, and Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity, the 15th largest Habitat Affiliate in the U.S., announced their partnership at the organization's monthly board meeting held at the Williams Mullen East Cary Street office yesterday evening. The firm made a permanent commitment to assist Richmond Habitat with pro bono legal services.

"We are answering the call for affordable and workforce housing," said Andy Nea, Williams Mullen Pro Bono Partner. "By leveraging our capacity as a large-size firm, we can do the heavy lifting required to make these building projects a success."

In years past, several lawyers and firms have donated pro bono hours to the affiliate's mission and to the families served by the entity. Leisha G. LaRiviere, Executive Director of the Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity, said that the new partnership will provide the capacity necessary to bring the organization's impact to the next level. "With Williams Mullen now as our permanent partner, our staff and board of directors know that a bevy of legal experts in a variety of specialties are ready to assist us. Having this public/private partnership will move us more quickly toward our strategic goals and flex our business model from single-family homes built on single lots to multi-family homes in mixed-use, mixed-income developments."

Richmond Habitat is structured in four parts: a large construction company that builds nearly 30 houses per year; a social services agency that assists more than 550 families annually; a mortgage company managing mortgages for all Habitat homeowners; and an operating retailer of ReStore, a building supply, furniture and eclectic re-sale store. The firm anticipates it will help the organization with legal issues in areas of real estate and land use law, but the work could extend across all of the core components.

"We are honored and we are grateful for this community commitment," said Leisha. "We hope that other law firms will similarly engage nonprofits to further strengthen our region through strategic collaboration."

From Closing Deals To Designing Communities: Former Womble Carlyle Attorney Pursues Career In Landscape Architecture
For most people, a successful career as a mergers and acquisitions attorney would be more than enough work for one lifetime. But for retired Womble Carlyle attorney William A. Davis, a legal career was only Phase One.

Davis, who retired from full-time legal practice three years ago, received a Master’s Degree in landscape architecture from North Carolina State University on Saturday, May 12th. He intends to put that degree into use as a landscape designer.

“I was a happy lawyer; I had a great career,” Davis said. In his distinguished tenure at Womble Carlyle, he earned a number of accolades from his peers, including designation among the Best Lawyers in America, the N.C. Legal Elite and the Chambers USA list of America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. He completed many high-profile M&A transactions, including a $3.38 billion deal for BB&T.

However, he said the demands placed on an M&A attorney are extremely intense and time-consuming. He said he wanted to keep working in a creative, challenging field, but a somewhat less stressful one.

He initially considered teaching at a law school, but decided he would rather try something completely different. Davis said landscape architecture was something that had interested him for some time, so he considered giving that a try.

But that would mean going back to college for a master’s degree program. Davis had plenty of experience in higher education—an undergraduate degree from UNC, a law degree from Duke and a degree in tax law from NYU—but he hadn’t been a college student in more than 30 years.

“I had three concerns: One, could I design? Two, could I keep up with younger students? And three, how I would be accepted by my professors and classmates?” he said.

As it turned out, none of those concerns proved to be a problem. Davis performed well in his classes and fit right in with his classmates. “They treated me like one of the students,” he said.

Betsy Tucker, Davis’ daughter and an attorney with Targacept, Inc., in Winston-Salem, said she wasn’t surprised by her father’s retirement plans.

“It was a natural choice for him to make. He’s an intellectually curious person who has always loved the outdoors,” she said. “We’re all very proud of him.”

Completing a new course of study took a fair amount of sacrifice. Davis, who lives in Winston-Salem, maintained an apartment in Raleigh, where he stayed during the week while he attended classes. After three years of full-time study, Davis has completed his course work and plans to begin designing landscapes.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “I realized I wanted to do something creative and engaging and this seemed to be a great fit.”

Investors Look to Rapidly-growing Insurance Risk Markets
White & Case advised French investments and projects bank NATIXIS on the formation and the $600 million closing of Pentelia Limited ("Pentelia"). Pentelia is a highly innovative alternative investment fund designed to participate in a broad array of rapidly-growing insurance risk securitisation markets. The Fund will invest in a diversified portfolio of life and non-life insurance-linked assets including adverse mortality bonds, weather derivatives, terrorism insurance, life settlements, catastrophe bonds and property catastrophe reinsurance.

Pentelia will be managed by a new asset management company based in Bermuda, which is a partnership between NATIXIS and White Mountains Insurance Group, on which White & Case also advised. The Fund has also created Pentelia Re, a new Bermuda reinsurance company, in order to be able to offer direct reinsurance coverage on a collateralised basis, and a Cayman life settlements vehicle, Pentelia V. White & Case also advised on the structuring of the carried interest vehicles for the Management Team.

"Investors want a different kind of risk profile in their portfolios, coupled with the opportunity for higher investment returns, which is creating an enormous appetite in the market for exposure to alternative asset classes. As a result we are seeing increasingly innovative alternative investment funds being established in a bid to meet the surge in investor demand," commented Matthew Judd, head of White & Case's Investment Funds practice in London and lead partner advising on the deal.

The White & Case team advising NATIXIS was led by partner Matthew Judd, working closely with associates Zeeshan Ahmedani, Anand Damodaran, Sonali Siriwardena, Rebecca Wall and trainee solicitor Adam Woollaston.

White & Case's global Investment Funds practice, which spans New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Frankfurt and London, was named Best Asian Investment Funds Practice 2006 by AsianInvestor.
