Carlton Fields Attorneys Receive Board Certification in Appellate Practice from The Florida Bar
The law firm of Carlton Fields is pleased to announce that Shareholders Nancy C. Ciampa and Joseph H. Lang, Jr. have received Board Certification in Appellate Practice from The Florida Bar. This brings the Firm’s total number of board certified appellate lawyers to seven, the largest group of its kind in the state.

“Achieving this important Board Certification designation demonstrates to our clients that our firm’s lawyers are willing to take the extra steps to have their competence and experience expanded and recognized,” said Gary L. Sasso, President and Chief Executive Officer of Carlton Fields. “Their knowledge, skill and proficiency in appellate law make them true leaders in this practice area. We are exceptionally proud of their accomplishment.”

Board Certification is the highest level of recognition by The Florida Bar of the competency and experience within an area of law. Lawyers certified in appellate law deal with matters relating to the recognition and preservation of error committed by lower tribunals, and the presentation of argument concerning the presence or absence of such error to state or federal appellate courts through brief writing, writ and motion practice and oral argument. Appellate practice also includes evaluation and consultation regarding potential appellate issues or remedies in connection with proceedings in the lower tribunal prior to the initiation of the appellate process. Only 157 attorneys in the State of Florida are certified in this area of law.

Ciampa, who works in the Firm’s Miami office, practices in the areas of appellate and trial support law, including civil appeals. She has briefed and orally argued cases in the areas of product liability, personal injury, admiralty and maritime, insurance and insurer “bad faith” and commercial litigation. Ciampa received her B.A. from the University of Maine in 1975, her Masters in Education, summa cum laude, from Boston University in 1979, and her J.D., summa cum laude, from Nova Southeastern University Law School in 1997.

Lang, who works in the Firm’s Tampa office, is a member of the Firm's Appellate Practice and Trial Support, Antitrust & Trade Regulation and Class Action Litigation Practice Groups. He earned his law degree from the University of Florida College of Law in 1995, his LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1998, and his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Florida in 1992.

Pro Bono Profile: Boys & Girls Club Solves Neighborhood Problem, Gets Land For A Teen Center
The John Avery Boys and Girls Club faced two problems with a common solution.

A house next door to the club’s administrative office had become a magnet for illegal activity and a danger to the club. After the last tenants left, the owner boarded up the house. But that still didn’t stop drug users from attempting to break into the house and the Boys and Girls Club office. At the same time, the Boys and Girls wanted to expand their offerings to older children. To do that, club leaders wanted to create a "Teen Center," so Durham’s teenagers would have a positive place to spend their free time.

Enter Womble Carlyle attorneys Culley Carson and Kim Justus and paralegal Barbara Sporrer, who offered to help the Boys and Girls Club on a pro bono bases. Culley, Kim and Barbara worked with the City of Durham and the property owner to negotiate a sale of the property to the Boys and Girls Club. Culley, a Durham native and member of the Board of Directors for the John Avery Boys and Girls Club, helped put the club in touch with Womble Carlyle.

After months of work, the deal closed in May, 2007. Club officials plan to tear down the dilapidated structure and build a Teen Center on the property.

This isn’t the first time the firm has aided the John Avery Boys and Girls
