Michael Nassau Appointed to EPTA Liason Group
Michael Nassau has been appointed to the EPTA Liaison Group (Employee Plans Team Audit), a liaison group formed by the National Office of the Internal Revenue Service to address issues and concerns that affect large (over 2500 participants) plans. This is in addition to his ongoing service as a charter member of the EP Northeast Area Liaison Group organized by the regional key district.

Joel Heydenburk Begins Term as President of FW Young Lawyers Association
JW Associate Joel Heydenburk began his term as President of the Fort Worth-Tarrant County Young Lawyers Association on September 1.

The FW-TCYLA is a voluntary Bar organization for young lawyers living or working in Tarrant County. It is a local affiliate of the Texas Young Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association - Young Lawyers Division. The organization was founded in 1928 and has over 50 active members, who network with other new lawyers and participate in community service projects.

Mr. Heydenburk is an associate in the Business Transactions section of Jackson Walker. His practice focuses on real estate and finance transactions, and he regularly represents landlords in the preparation and negotiation of commercial office, retail and industrial property leases in Texas and other states across the nation. Mr. Heydenburk's experience consists of representing buyers and sellers in acquisitions and sales of commercial properties ranging from $1 million and exceeding $130 million. He also has experience in the preparation of loan documents and associated real estate documents for a large commercial mortgage lender.

Mr. Heydenburk was appointed to the Steering Committee of the Young Leaders Council, a subset of the Greater Fort Worth Real Estate Council, and he was also selected for membership in The Eldon B. Mahon Inn of Court in Fort Worth. He earned his B.B.A. degree from Texas Christian University. He received his M.B.A. and his J.D. degree from Texas Tech University, where he was Business Manager of the Texas Tech Law Review.

Fox Rothschild Continues Merger Streak
Fox Rothschild LLP announced that Ely Goldin has joined the firm's Business Litigation Practice Area as a partner.

"Ely has experience as a business litigator in both the state and federal courts," said Stephanie Resnick, co-chair of the Litigation Department. "In addition to his trial experience, Ely has a strong background in business litigation and insurance insolvency–which makes for an ideal addition to our department. We are delighted that he's chosen to join us, and we look forward to adding his knowledge and talent to our practice."

Goldin, who had previously co-founded the center-city litigation boutique Grayson & Goldin, P.C. before going into solo practice, concentrates his practice in commercial litigation, regulatory, and transactional matters. Fluent in Russian, Goldin has focused part of his practice on the needs of the Russian immigrant population.

"Joining Fox will enable me to offer my clients the resources they need without losing that personal touch that has helped me to build a thriving practice," said Goldin. "This is the right move for me, and for my clients."

Goldin was listed as one of the "50 of the Fast Track" by the Legal Intelligencer in 2002, and is "AV" rated by Martindale-Hubbell. He is a graduate of the Widener University School of Law (J.D. 1995) and the State University of New York at Albany (B.A. 1992). Goldin is admitted to practice is Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and before a variety of U.S. District and Appeals courts.

Walter Cupkovic to Speak at Conference on Commercial Real Estate Leases on September 17
Walter D. Cupkovic, Chairman of Thompson Coburn Fagel Haber’s Real Estate and Real Estate Tax Assessment Departments, will speak on Negotiating Key Lease Provisions on September 17, 2007, at Law Seminars International’s Second Annual Advanced Conference on Commercial Real Estate Leases.

This two-day conference will take place on September 17 and 18 at The Gleacher Center, 450 North Cityfront Plaza Drive, Chicago, Illinois. This seminar will provide insightful, practical information useful to real estate lawyers, brokers, lenders, landlords and tenants in negotiating and enforcing commercial leases. Naomi Travers Joins Drinker Biddle’s Washington, D.C., Office as Counsel
Naomi Travers has joined Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP’s recently expanded Washington, D.C., office as counsel on the Communications Law Team.

Travers has worked for the past several years on the business side of the media and entertainment industry. She was executive vice president, media rights and entertainment for Bobcats Sports and Entertainment LLC, overseeing media operations for the NBA Charlotte Bobcats, WNBA Charlotte Sting and the new Charlotte arena, including the creation of a regional sports network. Before moving to Charlotte, N.C.,

Travers was executive vice president of The RLJ Companies in Washington, D.C., which is a diverse portfolio of companies in the financial services, asset management, real estate, hospitality, professional sports, film production and gaming industries. “Adding lawyers such as Naomi to our communications practice is an integral part of our overall goal of strategic expansion in the Washington market,” said Drinker Biddle Chairman Alfred W. Putnam, Jr. “Her background on both the business and legal sides of the communication industry will prove to be an invaluable asset to the team.”

Travers, who is also a former staff attorney with the Federal Communications Commission, will focus part of her practice at Drinker Biddle on the representation of radio and television broadcasters in the sales and acquisitions of broadcast stations and in all aspects of FCC regulatory matters. In addition to her FCC experience, Travers also was assistant general counsel, business development from 2000-2003 at Black Entertainment Television, Inc.

District Court Rejects IRS Claim to Tax Attorney Work-Product
In a decision praised by tax practitioners and assailed by the IRS, United States v. Textron Inc., a district court has held that the work-product privilege allowed Textron Inc. to resist an IRS summons seeking to obtain memoranda and opinions prepared by Textron's in-house tax attorneys and outside counsel. The IRS has already indicated that it will likely appeal this decision.
