KARIN DEMASI TO SPEAK AT PLI CONFERENCE ON SECURITIES LITIGATION
Cravath partner Karin A. DeMasi will speak at PLI's Securities Litigation & Enforcement Institute 2007, a two-day conference in New York City. Karin will participate in a panel discussion entitled "Defending the Securities Class Action". Panelists will discuss pleading motions, handling confidential witnesses, dealing with the problem of multiple fronts, effects of Supreme Court cases on pleading scienter and scheme liability, new challenges to class certification (Circuit Court rulings) and the new Citibank case.

70 Baker & Daniels Attorneys on Best Lawyers in America
Baker & Daniels LLP is the leader among Indiana law firms with the most Indianapolis and Fort Wayne attorneys named to The Best Lawyers in America® 2008, a national publication that identifies the best attorneys in the country.

Best Lawyers is regarded as the definitive guide to legal excellence in the United States by the legal profession. The publication conducts an exhaustive peer review survey that has been developed and refined for 25 years. The current edition of Best Lawyers is based on more than two million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers. The publication helps lawyers and clients find legal counsel in unfamiliar jurisdictions and practices.

In all, 70 Baker & Daniels lawyers – 10 more than last year – from offices in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and South Bend were recognized in 33 different practice areas. Eighteen individuals were named Best Lawyers in more than one practice area.

In U.S. rankings, Baker & Daniels was second with the most lawyers listed in gaming law and third with the most lawyers recognized in nonprofit/charities law. In Indiana, Baker & Daniels was first among Hoosier firms in 10 practices, including corporate law with 18 lawyers. In corporate law, Baker & Daniels also ranked No. 1 in Indianapolis (13) and Fort Wayne (four).

Other practices where Baker & Daniels had the most lawyers among Indiana firms were administrative, antitrust, bet-the-company litigation, eminent domain/condemnation, international trade/finance, land use/zoning, leveraged buyouts/private equity, nonprofit/charities and securities law.

Morgan Lewis Receives MCCA’s Sager Award for the Western Region
Morgan Lewis is pleased to announce that the firm has received the Minority Corporate Counsel Association’s (MCCA) Thomas L. Sager Award for the Western Region. This award was created in honor of Thomas L. Sager, Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of DuPont, and is presented only five times each year to law firms who have demonstrated a commitment to creating a more inclusive legal profession and working environment. Veta Richardson, Executive Director of MCCA, describes the award as "a national honor that I hope will encourage your firm and its Diversity Committee to build upon your existing commitment through the ongoing implementation of diversity best practices."

The award will be presented to the firm at MCCA’s Western Region diversity dinner on October 11, 2007 in San Francisco.

SEC Approves New FINRA Rule 2821
The SEC approved FINRA Rule 2821, which imposes new broker-dealer sales practice, supervisory, and training requirements for purchases and exchanges of deferred variable annuities (VAs).

Widely Recognized Tax Partner, Carolyn Joy Lee, Joins Jones Day
Prominent tax attorney Carolyn Joy Lee has joined the global law firm Jones Day as a partner in the approximately 300-lawyer New York Office. She was formerly a partner at Roberts & Holland LLP.

"Carolyn's considerable experience in state and local taxation and the taxation of real property transactions enhances our strong tax practice," said Carl Jenks, partner and coordinator of the Jones Day New York Tax Practice. "Members of the Jones Day Tax Practice have known and worked with Carolyn for many years and have found her to be one of the most outstanding practitioners in her area in New York." "Carolyn adds a very important new dimension to the multistate tax practice of Jones Day. We are exceptionally pleased to have her join our national team,” said David Cowling, partner and head of Jones Day’s state and local tax practice.

Ms. Lee is widely recognized for her extensive experience in state and local taxation. Her transactional practice encompasses a broad variety of planning, including in the contexts of corporate mergers and acquisitions, structured finance, asset sales and acquisitions, workouts and bankruptcies, internal structuring for issues of nexus, combination and apportionment, state and local tax planning for high-net-worth individuals, and the taxation of special entities such as utilities. She draws on her federal tax background to provide special insights in integrating state and local tax advice with traditional federal planning.

She also has an active practice handling federal, state, and local tax audits, controversies, and litigation and advising clients considering voluntary disclosure agreements, amnesties, and financial reporting issues relating to state and local tax compliance.

Ms. Lee has served as chair of the Tax Section of the New York State Bar Association and as chair of the State and Local Tax Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. She is a member emeritus of the New York City Tax Forum and a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel. She has served on advisory boards for the New York State and City Commissioners of Taxation and Finance and the State and City Tax Appeals Tribunals. She coauthored Federal Taxation of Real Estate: A Guide for Advisors and Investors and the BNA Portfolio "New York State Sales and Use Taxes" and continues to write and speak frequently on topics relating to state and local taxation.

Ms. Lee is a graduate of Columbia University School of Law, where she was a Stone scholar, and received her undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Johns Hopkins.

New Additions Significantly Enhance Akin Gump's China Presence
Nine months after opening its Beijing office, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, one of the world’s largest international law firms, has announced a significant expansion of its practice there with the addition of six attorneys, bringing the total number of full-time resident attorneys and senior advisors to 11.

Janet Jie Tang and her four-person transactions team join from DLA Piper. Ms. Tang brings 14 years of China-related corporate and M&A experience. The team has advised numerous multinational companies on cross-border acquisitions and joint venture transactions in a wide spectrum of areas, including cosmetics, software and pharmaceuticals.

Also joining the firm are capital markets lawyer Holly Smith from Allen & Overy in Hong Kong and IP lawyer Lien Yea-Ling from Catch IPR Consultancy in Taipei.

* Janet Jie Tang. Ms. Tang was named one of the most highly acclaimed legal experts in Asia by AsiaLaw. She has represented numerous U.S. and European Fortune 500 clients in business transactions in China and has authored many articles on Chinese law. With her practice focusing on corporate and M&A transactions, Ms. Tang has rich experience in advising on China-related regulatory, antitrust and franchising law issues. She is a graduate of the law schools of Peking University and Northwestern University (Chicago).
* Lu Ning. A senior attorney with seven years of experience advising major U.S. and European clients on mergers and acquisitions, IT, tax, employment, intellectual property and franchise law, Ms. Lu is a graduate of the law schools of Peking University and the University of Minnesota.
* Wang Yuanming. A senior IP attorney advising major U.S. and European clients on Chinese IP, IT and customs law over the past nine years, Ms. Wang was previously a lawyer with China’s Supreme Procuratorate.
* Zeng Linyan. A corporate attorney, Ms. Zeng worked at Chinese state-owned companies and a top Chinese law firm before joining Ms. Tang’s transactions team at DLA Piper.
* Holly Smith. Fluent in Chinese, Ms. Smith is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and a former staff member of the White House National Security Council.
* Lien Yea-Ling. Ms. Lien has over 15 years of experience handling patent prosecution matters, IP strategic management, IP licensing and enforcement in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Prior to joining Akin Gump, she was the president of Catch IPR Consultancy (Hong Kong) Co. Ltd. and vice president of Lian and Lien IP Attorneys Co. Ltd. in Beijing.

Akin Gump has long been sought out by Chinese companies, including China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), to assist in navigating the regulatory landscape in Washington. It has already brought to China its traditional strength in legal advisory work for private equity and investment funds, and offers legal services to both Chinese companies moving offshore and foreign companies investing in China.

The new arrivals join a group of full-time resident lawyers and advisors led by Eliot Cutler, whose career spans U.S. government service, law and politics. The legal team also includes Ying White, a former counsel to the World Bank’s pension fund, and Zheng Xilin, who also joined from the World Bank after a legal career at the Chinese foreign ministry. Akin Gump played an important role in supporting foreign trade and investment in China prior to receiving its license in December 2006. Founder Robert Strauss helped establish formal commercial and diplomatic relations between the United States and the People’s Republic of China. Wolf Haldenstein Announces Preliminary Approval of Settlement of Tower Automotive ERISA Litigation
United States District Judge Robert W. Sweet preliminarily considered the proposed settlement of the action captioned In re Tower Automotive ERISA Litigation, C.A. No. 05-2184 (RWS). Judge Sweet has scheduled the Final Settlement Hearing for December 10, 2007, at 4:00 p.m. at the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, 500 Pearl Street, New York, New York, in Courtroom 18C, or in the Courtroom then occupied by United States District Judge Robert W. Sweet.

The action asserted claims for alleged violations of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, with respect to the Tower Automotive Retirement Plan, Tower Automotive Union 401(k) Plan, Tower Automotive Products Savings Investment Plan, and Tower Automotive Products Employee 401(k) Savings Plan (together with any predecessor plans and any plans merged into it).
