Mayer Brown Awards Legal Business Prize at the College of Europe, Bruges, Belgium
International law firm Mayer Brown[1] is delighted to announce the winner of its first Legal Business Prize. The prize for academic excellence was inaugurated at the College of Europe's closing ceremony for the academic year 2006/2007 on 22 June 2007 in Bruges, Belgium. The award seeks to encourage the study of EU law and in particular its importance to and impact on the business community. It is awarded to the candidate judged to have submitted the best thesis addressing this topic.

This year the prize was awarded to Antonios Bouchagiar, a Greek law student from the College of Europe. Antonios was chosen from among those students who submitted theses addressing relevant business issues such as network industries, market power and intellectual property rights. Entitled "Soft-Wars: The Role of the Essential Facilities Doctrine as Jus in Bello", the winner's outstanding thesis provided valuable insight into the fields of competition law and intellectual property rights.

The prize includes a six-month paid internship with Mayer Brown in Brussels and a cash prize of 2,000 Euros. It is open to candidates from the College of Europe who are studying law and are about to embark on their professional careers.

Mayer Brown is proud to join those from the private sector who support the College of Europe. As the leading post-graduate institution in European integration matters, it has educated generations of international scholars over more than 50 years.

Dr. Günter Burghardt, Senior Counsel in the Brussels office of Mayer Brown and Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, commented: "We would like to warmly congratulate Antonios on his success in winning this highly regarded award in its initial year. All entries were of an exceptionally high standard, but Antonios' was outstanding. It is a privilege to support such highly skilled students and facilitate their entry into successful, professional careers."

Kiran Desai, partner in the Brussels office of Mayer Brown, added:"Mayer Brown has a commitment to contribute to thinking on legal issues important to the EU and to support young lawyers entering the profession."

Luce Forward Employment Attorney Micah Parzen Honored With San Diego Metropolitan's "40 Under Forty" Award
Luce Forward employment attorney Micah Parzen has been recognized by the San Diego Metropolitan as one of its “40 under Forty” exceptional young business and civic leaders. Individuals are chosen for the “40 under Forty” award by a panel of judges based on their business accomplishments, community involvement and personal achievements.

Parzen was selected for the honor largely because of the preventive focus of his employment law practice, which seeks to help clients head off employee relations problems at the pass before they escalate into administrative claims and/or lawsuits. Parzen’s counseling practice draws heavily upon his doctorate in Anthropology, which enables him to approach workplace conflict as a clash of cultures that, once identified as such, can often be prevented or resolved through effective communication strategies.

“Micah’s two-fold expertise as an employment attorney and an anthropologist is unusual and lends an extraordinarily unique perspective to his area of practice,” said Robert J. Bell, Luce Forward’s managing partner. “He is an accomplished attorney and we are pleased to see him being recognized for his long history of achievements in a variety of settings.”

Parzen is also the President of the Board of Directors of ElderHelp of San Diego, a non-profit organization that provides personalized services and information that help enable seniors to remain independent in their homes and live with dignity.

Parzen, a member of Luce Forward’s labor and employment practice group, provides outside-the-box counseling to employers on all aspects of the employment relationship, including wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wage and hour issues, prevailing wage laws and OSHA-related matters. He also vigorously defends employers from administrative complaints and lawsuits filed by current and former employees. Parzen, who teaches employment law at SDSU’s College of Extended Studies and frequently lectures on a wide variety of employment-related topics, also regularly provides trainings on how to prevent unlawful harassment and discrimination in the workplace.

Daily Bankruptcy Review Publishes Article by Partner Eric Wilson
The Daily Bankruptcy Review published an article by Partner Eric Wilson titled "Enron Decision May Permit 'Washing' of Tainted Claims." The article, featured in the publication's "Viewpoints" column reviews a recent appellate decision by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York regarding a decision in the Enron bankruptcy case. Mr. Wilson explains that the district court's decision could have a significant impact on creditors, particularly parties to claims transfers. If followed, the decision could cause a reduction in creditors recoveries on claims because transferred claims formerly subject to challenge may be allowed, thereby increasing the overall amount of claims against the estate. Mr. Wilson also authored an article on this topic for Bankruptcy Law360 titled "Enron May Protect Transferees Of Tainted Claims." In addition, his article in the Daily Bankruptcy Review was quoted in DealFlowMedia.com.
