Hogan & Hartson Expands Domestic and International Real Estate Capabilities With Addition of Miami Partner
Hogan & Hartson LLP announced today that Joseph M. Hernandez has joined the firm’s Miami office and real estate practice as a partner. In his new role, Hernandez will significantly broaden the firm’s domestic and international real estate capabilities.

Hernandez, who was previously a corporate and real estate banker, represents real estate developers in all phases of complex commercial real estate transactions, including the negotiation, documentation, and closing of the acquisition and sale, development, and financing of commercial real estate. He represents both financial institutions and borrowers obtaining acquisition and construction financing, and has handled the resolution of complex title issues. In addition, Hernandez has significant experience in documenting and negotiating real estate joint ventures and private placements to raise capital for real estate projects.

Hernandez has represented several U.S. and foreign institutional investors in the acquisition, development, and financing of commercial real estate projects throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. He has represented several major financial institutions extending financing for commercial real estate projects, as well as non-real estate related secured loan facilities.

“The breadth of Joe’s experience in real estate transactional work will be a great asset to the firm and the Miami office. Prior to joining Hogan & Hartson, Hernandez was a partner in the real estate practice at Greenberg Traurig.

Hernandez, who is fluent in Spanish, was formerly the Chairman of the board of directors of Junior Achievement of Greater Miami and now serves as a board member. He also is a member of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and the United Way’s Young Leaders Society. In addition, Hernandez teaches a real estate transaction workshop at the University of Miami Law School.

Hernandez received his law degree from the University of Miami School of Law, cum laude, and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida.

Crowell & Moring Demonstrates Commitment To The Advancement of Women In The Legal Profession By Joining The Project For Attorney Retention
Crowell & Moring LLP, along with 22 of the nation's leading law firms, has joined The Project for Attorney Retention (PAR) as a Founding Member. PAR works to stem unwanted attrition among lawyers - a benefit for both legal employers and the lawyers themselves - by the advancement of women in the legal profession and promoting work/life balance.

“Crowell & Moring is proud to be a Founding Member of PAR as it focuses on improving opportunities for women in law firms, particularly in the areas of work/life balance, success on a part-time track, and the movement of women into firm leadership. We look forward to participating in the annual academy for women partners and sharing best practices with other members,“ said Monica G. Parham, Crowell & Moring’s diversity counsel.

Launched as part of the Women's Bar Association of D.C.'s retention initiative, PAR has previously issued reports about part-time work in law firms and corporate law departments, and will launch a new study of part-time law firm partners in October 2007. PAR members work with the group to review their part-time policies and participate in professional development discussions for attorneys who work reduced hours .Additional firms are expected to join in the coming months.

Ralston Selected as Best of the Bar
Rich Ralston was once again selected as a "2007 Best of the Bar" honoree. The Best of the Bar is a peer review of emerging leaders and well-known pillars of the legal community in Kansas City. The list is published annually by the Kansas City Business Journal.

Ralston is a member of the firm's Litigation Department where he concentrates his practice in the areas of mediation and arbitration. He has mediated more than 4,000 cases in his career ranging from major torts to medical malpractice to complex environmental, reinsurance and commercial.

He is also listed in The Best Lawyers in America 2007 for Alternative Dispute Resolution, is recognized as a 2006 Missouri/Kansas Super Lawyer and is listed in Ingram's magazine's "Best of the Best."

Two New Intellectual Property Lawyers Bring Strong Legal and Technological Expertise to Growing Client Base
In another example of its continuing growth, Armstrong Teasdale’s Intellectual Property Practice Group is pleased to announce the hiring of two additional lawyers, James J. Barta, Jr. and Michael H. Longmeyer. These additions bring the total number of lawyers in Armstrong Teasdale’s Intellectual Practice Group to 35, of which 26 are registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

“Since IP is a significant area of growth for our clients across the country, we are continuing to attract very talented attorneys to meet the demands of the marketplace.” said Intellectual Property Practice Group Leader Patrick Rasche. "In addition to their legal experience, both Jim and Mike bring impressive expertise in diverse technologies that will add tremendous value to our clients. The depth and breadth in our IP practice is a great differentiator for our firm."

Barta joins the intellectual property practice as a partner. He has extensive experience in the preparation and prosecution of software, hardware and business method patent applications, as well as experience in various computer-related technologies. He is licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and was formerly with the St. Louis intellectual property firm of Senniger Powers. Prior to his legal career, Barta was employed as a senior engineer at McDonnell Douglas, now Boeing, where he was recognized for outstanding performance.

Barta received his J.D. degree from Saint Louis University School of Law in 1999 and his M.S. degree in Computer Science in 1996; Graduate Certificate in Networking and Telecommunications in 1996; and three B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering (1994), Computer Science (1994) and Computer Engineering (1996) from Washington University. He is a member of The Missouri Bar Association, Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Association for Computing Machinery and the Engineer's Club of St. Louis.

Longmeyer joins the firm’s intellectual property group as an associate where he will specialize in intellectual property litigation. He is licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and prior to joining the firm, he was a law clerk to the Honorable Raymond W. Gruender, United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Longmeyer also worked as a NASA electronics engineer from 1991 to 2001 at the Marshall Space Flight Center.

Longmeyer received his J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Ave Maria School of Law in 2004 and his M.S. (1991) and B.S. (1989) degrees in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University. He is a member of The Missouri Bar, Illinois State Bar Association, Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, American Bar Association and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Davis Polk Advises AstraZeneca on Its $6.9 Billion Debt Offering
Davis Polk & Wardwell advised AstraZeneca PLC on the establishment of an automatic shelf registration statement and the immediate takedown of $6.9 billion aggregate principal amount of notes, consisting of $650 million principal amount of floating-rate notes due 2009, $1.75 billion principal amount of 5.40% notes due 2012, $1.75 billion principal amount of notes due 2017 and $2.75 billion principal amount of 6.45% notes due 2037. This was the largest corporate bond deal so far this year and the largest U.S. debt offering in over five years. The proceeds of the offering are being used to refinance commercial paper that AstraZeneca incurred in connection with its recently completed acquisition of MedImmune, Inc., the biotechnology company, a $15.6 billion acquisition on which Davis Polk also advised.

AstraZeneca is a major international research-based bio-pharmaceutical company with headquarters in the United Kingdom.

The Davis Polk corporate team included partners Thomas J. Reid and Jeffrey M. Oakes and associates Sonia L.R. Garner and Nghiem Nguyen, all of the London office. Partner John D. Paton and associate Brian Radigan of the London office provided tax advice. Associate Alina Fulop of the New York office provided investment company advice.

Robinson & Cole Partner and Counsel to Chair Subcommittees of the ABA's Tax Section
Partner Richard W. Tomeo and Counsel John R. Shaughnessy, Jr. have been designated Subcommittee Chairs for the ABA Tax Section's State and Local Tax Committee. Mr. Tomeo will chair the Government Submissions and Legislative Whitepapers Subcommittee, which is an incubator for Tax Section initiatives such as the business activities tax white paper and a model state tax tribunal law. Mr. Shaughnessy will chair the Sales and Use Tax Subcommittee, and be responsible for coordinating the Tax Section's activities in this area and development of sales and use tax programs at Tax Section meetings.

Foley Milwaukee Attorneys Named To The Best Lawyers In America®
Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that 60 attorneys from its Milwaukee office have been selected for inclusion in the 2008 edition of The Best Lawyers in America®.

Retired partner John R. Dawson was also recognized in the area of Alternative Dispute Resolution for the 10th consecutive year.

The number after attorneys' names indicates that they have been named to the Best Lawyers list for at least 10 or 20 consecutive years and the asterisk after their names denotes that this is the first year these attorneys have been listed.

The 2008 edition is the 14th edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Best Lawyers is based on peer-review surveys in which attorneys throughout the country cast nearly a half million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their specialties. Corporate Counsel magazine has called Best Lawyers “the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice.”
