Seasoned D.C. Litigator joins White Collar Team at Morgan Lewis
Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP is pleased to announce that Barbara “Biz” Van Gelder has joined the firm as a partner in the Litigation practice, resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. A former federal prosecutor, Ms. Van Gelder is well respected for her ability to steer clients through the gamut of white collar proceedings—from congressional investigations to civil qui tam actions to administrative hearings and criminal litigation. She has served as counsel to such high-profile clients as David Safavian, the former Bush administration official implicated in the Abramoff scandal and former FDA Administrator Lester Crawford.

“As the traditional boundaries of criminal and civil enforcement continue to expand, Biz’s ability to offer experience and leadership on some of the most complex white collar situations further enhances an already thriving practice,” said James D. Pagliaro, head of Morgan Lewis's Litigation Practice. “We are delighted to have Biz join us in Washington, where she has honed the skills to assist our clients on a wide range of white collar needs.”

Washingtonian magazine named Ms. Van Gelder a “top criminal defense lawyer,” someone to call if “you find yourself drawn into an awkward congressional investigation, or worse, a grand-jury investigation by the Justice Department or the U.S. Attorney’s office.”

Morgan Lewis’s Litigation Practice consists of a 700-litigator contingent across 18 offices, and its members’ creativity, sophistication, and cross-practice capabilities have resulted in a mounting number of calls from Fortune 100 firms. Ms. Van Gelder will join a Corporate Investigations and White Collar team that already includes the former head of the Justice Department’s Enron Task Force; 10 former assistant U.S. attorneys; former assistant district attorneys; and former high-ranking attorneys from the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice.

Ms. Van Gelder’s practice will focus on white collar litigation and healthcare litigation, including representing clients in congressional investigations, criminal fraud investigations and qui tam, false claim, civil RICO, and employment litigation. Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Ms. Van Gelder was a partner and head of the white collar litigation group at a national law firm in Washington, D.C. Prior to that, she served for more than 14 years in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia in both the criminal and civil divisions.

The 2008 directory is the 14th edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Since its inception in 1983, Best Lawyers has become universally regarded as the definitive guide to legal excellence in the United States. Because it is based on an exhaustive peer-review survey in which leading attorneys throughout the country cast more than two million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their specialties, and because lawyers are not required or allowed to pay a fee to be listed, inclusion in Best Lawyers is considered a singular honor. Corporate Counsel magazine has called Best Lawyers “the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice.”

The law firm of Miller Canfield was established in Detroit in 1852 and employs more than 800 in offices in Michigan, Massachusetts, Florida, New York, Canada and Poland.

Ann Huckstep Named Businesswoman of the Year by Birmingham Business Journal
Adams and Reese Partner and Executive Committee Chair Ann Huckstep has been named "Businesswoman of the Year" by the Birmingham Business Journal. She will be recognized at a luncheon on October 25, 2007 along with 10 other businesswomen named among the "Top Birmingham Women for 2007", an honor that Huckstep received in 2005. She is profiled in a full-page article in the September 14th edition of the Birmingham Business Journal.

Huckstep was chosen to receive this honor, most notably for making firm history as the first female ever chair the firm’s Executive Committee, a position she began in November 2006. However, making history is nothing new to Huckstep. In 1971, her classmates voted her “Most Likely to Succeed.” She was the first young woman ever to receive that title, but was stripped of the honor and told that her peers were supposed to have voted for a boy. Since then, Huckstep’s career has been marked by many great accomplishments in her profession and in her community, and many notable “first female” titles.

In 1992, the health care attorney was the first female elected to serve on the Executive Committee of Lange, Simpson, Robinson & Somerville, one of Alabama’s oldest and most prestigious law firms that merged with Adams and Reese in January 2003. In addition to becoming Lange Simpson’s first female chair, Huckstep was also the first female to chair a top ten law firm in the entire state of Alabama. It was under her leadership that the Lange Simpson merger with Adams and Reese took flight, forming the largest law firm in the four state region at that time.

Huckstep is one of the top heath care attorneys in the Southeast region, and has been recognized by Best Lawyers of America for Health Care Law for many consecutive years. She represents a number of health care providers, including hospitals, medical service companies and physicians. She serves as an advisor on a broad range of matters, including compliance, accreditation, business transactions and corporate matters. She is also well-known for her extensive experience with Certificate of Need Law. In addition to health care law, Huckstep also practices in the areas of employee benefits and ERISA, mergers and acquisitions and general corporate law.

Despite devoting countless hours to her clients and her thriving legal practice, Huckstep is active in several civic and community groups, and has held numerous leadership roles among them. It is not surprising that she has also made many other "first female" milestones within those organizations. In 1987, she became the first female to chair the Board of Trustees for Christ United Methodist in Birmingham. In 1992, she was the first female to serve on the Board of Directors of the Birmingham Rotary Club. One year later, in 1993, Huckstep served as Chairman of the Board of Management of the Downtown Birmingham YMCA, and was again, the first woman to take on such an esteemed position. Huckstep presently serves as a Vice Chairman of the Birmingham Regional Chamber, as a member of its Executive Committee, as well as its legal counsel. She is on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Central Alabama, and on the Board of the Birmingham Rotary Club where she is also Sergeant at Arms. She is also a current Board Member of the Birmingham YMCA.
