Townsend and Genetech legal counsel move to Jones Day
Jones Day has acquired two new intellectual property lawyers. The first is Steven X. Cui, from Genetech's in house counsel division and lead IP counsel for Genetech's drug products.

The second is Daniel H. Mao, from Townsend and Townsend and Crew, where he focused on Silicon Valley concerns. That's a role he will still maintain at Jones Day, while Cui will be based in Beijing.

Allen & Overy LLP

Allen & Overy adds vacation "trading" initiative
The firm Allen & Overy now allows their lawyers to buy and sell their vacation days. They can sell their time back to the firm, or buy extra days, up to a proportion of their salary.

For example, a mid level trainee with 25 days of vacation could buy or sell up to 5 days of that time.

Interesting concept.

Crowell & Moring LLP

Crowell & Moring wins $6 Billion for clients from Libya
In 1989, Libya allegedly bombed a French airliner in Niger. On Tuesday this past week, Libya was ordered to pay $6 Billion in damages to the families of Americans killed in that attack. Crowell & Moring represented the families.

This is the first time Libya has actually appeared in court and had attorneys defend a case through judgment.

Milberg, Weiss, Bershad & Schulman, L.L.P.

Milberg Weiss wins large case
Seventh Circuit Justice Richard Posner issued a big win for big plaintiff's firm Milberg Weiss yesterday.

This case had gone to the US Supreme Court, and the Supreme's had ruled against Milberg, in a victory for big business last term. The Supreme Court had tightened pleading standards in Makor Issues & Rights v. Tellabs, and remanded that case back to the Seventh Circuit.

Judge Posner ruled that Milberg Weiss's complaint still met the burden of "a strong inference" of scienter.

So, Milberg gets some good news admit the US Supreme Courts recent history of siding with big business and against class-action's.

Borden Ladner Gervais LLP

Canadian firm sued over "steamy affair"
The Canadian firm Borden Ladner Gervais has been sued to the tune of $1.4 million over the actions of one of it's lawyers, George Hunter, over Hunter's alleged relationships with both his clients and fellow employees.

Hunter was disciplined for professional misconduct for starting a romantic relationship with a client, while simultaneously having romantic relationships with two fellow employees, none of whom knew about each other until one fateful day when one of the fellow employees opened an email....
