Andrews Kurth Lawyers Join in Providing Pro Bono Estate Planning for Firefighters
Andrews Kurth lawyers James Stilwell, Emmie West and Bert Estes were among the 11 attorneys who joined their colleagues at The Woodlands Bar Association Saturday, September 8, to assist 42 Woodlands firefighters in completing their wills and living wills.

The four-hour clinic, “Wills for Heroes,” hosted by the bar association at The Woodlands Fire Department’s Central Station, was an effort to help protect the firefighters’ families in recognition of the fact that the firefighters themselves risk their lives daily to help others.

“Everyone should have a will,” said Stilwell. “A will makes it easier on your family in the event you pass away by helping minimize the time and energy needed to transfer your assets to your loved ones. Without a will, probate court can get complicated.”

Saturday’s clinic focused on meeting with the participants, finalizing and notarizing the wills and living wills, and completing each firefighter’s medical and financial powers of attorney.

The three lawyers are litigators in Andrews Kurth’s office in The Woodlands. Staff members Wendy Leonard and Linda Wilson helped at the event with document revisions and notary services.

The Woodlands Bar Association has more than 160 members and was established in 2005.

Steptoe & Johnson Receives Well Workplace Gold Award
Steptoe & Johnson announced today that the firm’s Charleston, Clarksburg and Morgantown offices have received the coveted Well Workplace Gold Award, acknowledging its commitment to the health and well-being of employees. Presented by the Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA), the 2007 Well Workplace Gold Award recognizes Steptoe & Johnson for successfully integrating health promotion into its corporate culture and overall business practices.

“This is a very significant achievement because nationwide, only 59 Golds were awarded,” remarked Robert M. Steptoe, Jr., CEO of the firm.

Gold Well Workplaces are companies that have successfully built comprehensive worksite wellness initiatives and are demonstrating and documenting concrete outcomes related to behavior change, cost effectiveness and return on investment.

“This distinction confirms our firm’s commitment to being a leader in health promotion,” continued Steptoe. “To enhance wellness activities firm-wide, we have joined forces with beBetter Networks, Inc., which creates healthy living programs to assist individuals taking action toward protecting and improving their health. The combination of beBetter’s expertise and the firm’s experience with wellness groups will take our efforts to the next level,” he said.

Senniger Powers' Associate Julie Jennings Speaks on New Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) Rules.
Senniger Powers' Associate Julie Jennings co-presented a program on September 18 at the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis on TTAB Rules: Times Are A-Changin'. The program discussed new rules issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office that will significantly affect inter partes proceedings before the TTAB as of August 31, 2007. The rules affect the service of complaints, the timing and manner in which discovery and pretrial information is exchanged between parties in inter partes cases, as well as the protection of confidential information.

Ms. Jennings explains that possible implications of the new rules include increased costs and complexity of TTAB proceedings, fewer TTAB proceedings and more federal litigation, and the encouragement of earlier settlements. Click here for a chart summarizing the rule changes. For more information on the rules, contact Julie Jennings.
