Noted Attorney Don Clark to Lead Butler Snow
Don Clark, a Mississippi native with more than 30 years’ experience in governmental, business, and municipal bond law, is the new Chair of Butler, Snow, O’Mara, Stevens & Cannada, PLLC.
Clark, who joined Butler Snow in 1998, plans to continue his practice as he takes on his new management duties. “I’ll focus on executing our strategic plans,” Clark said. “We want to build on our reputation as an outstanding regional law firm, with national experience in areas like healthcare litigation.
“We’ve got a great staff, and I plan to rely on them,” Clark said. He credits his predecessor, Steve Rosenblatt, with moving Butler Snow over the past eight years from being a strong “Mississippi” firm to one with a regional and national reputation. Butler Snow, with more than 140 attorneys, has Jackson, Memphis and Gulf Coast offices. The Memphis office has grown from one attorney to 36, and the Coast Office now has 12 attorneys.
Butler Snow’s focus on client service sets it apart, according to Clark, who cited the firm’s high client satisfaction marks in a recent survey. “But those results only give us a higher goal to shoot for,” Clark said. “We have already implemented changes, like not charging clients for routine expenses, that will help us serve clients better.”
Clark, a native of Waynesboro, has a degree in political science from the University of Southern Mississippi and a law degree from the University of Mississippi. He began his legal career with the Mississippi Attorney General’s office and then moved to the law firm of Crosthwait Terney & Noble, where he built a municipal bond practice.
Clark was attracted to Butler Snow because of its energetic leadership, its commitment to client service and its plans for growth. First as leader of the Public Finance and Governmental Affairs Group and then as Chairman of the Business Department, Clark has used his knowledge of how government, politics and law intersect to serve a range of private and public clients. Clark and Patti, his wife of 25 years, have two sons
“Butler Snow is committed to serving clients, locally, regionally and nationally, across a range of practice areas,” Clark said. “I’m excited at the opportunity to help lead the firm forward.”
Butler Snow, with more than 140 attorneys, is one of the largest law firms in the Mid-South. Recently celebrating its 50th anniversary, Butler Snow has been a leading presence in the Southeastern legal community since 1954. Butler Snow represents clients across the state, region and nation in significant business and litigation matters across a diversified group of industry sectors from its offices in Jackson and Gulfport, Mississippi and in Memphis, Tennessee. Butler Snow offers its clients a full range of legal services. For more information go to www.butlersnow.com

DLA Piper advised the Hochtief-Alpine-Egis consortium
Lawyers from DLA Piper advised the Hochtief-Alpine-Egis consortium on its successful bid to provide the planning, financing, construction and operation of the first section of the Austrian A5 highway. The consortium reached financial close on 21 December 2006 to complete the transaction for the first Public Private Partnership ("PPP") project of the procuring party Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft ("ASFINAG").

DLA Piper's team advised the consortium on the review procedure and its internal structure. The tender was particularly complex and the multi-jurisdictional team, comprising lawyers from DLA Piper's London office and its CEE arm - DLA Piper Weiss-Tessbach in Vienna, worked closely together in order to provide a seamless service.

The team was led by Vienna-based finance and projects partners Stefan Eder and Wolfgang Freund. In the UK finance and projects partner Debbie Barbour and banking partner Sharon Smith were in charge of the legal structuring of the financing for the project's investment, amounting to €945 million. The innovative financing structure involved the capital markets participation via a monoline insurer.

Following financial closure Stefan Eder said: "It is a great success for us that we have advised the successful bidder in the first PPP-project of this kind in Austria."

The first section of the A5 is 51 kilometres and leads from the Northern boundaries of Vienna to Mistelbach.

Loren Brown named one of The American Lawyer's Top Young Litigators
Loren Brown, a New York-based member of DLA Piper's global litigation practice, has been named one of the country's top young litigators in the January 2007 issue of The American Lawyer. The publication cited Brown in its "Fab Fifty," a list of the 50 top up-and-coming litigators in the United States, all under the age of 45.

The American Lawyer's staff chose the 50 rising stars on the basis of each one's track record and potential. The selected honorees "have made their mark in this high visibility and highly competitive area by successfully trying and settling major cases," according to The American Lawyer.

AmLaw singled out Brown's recent appointment by Pfizer as co-national counsel overseeing the Celebrex and Bextra product liability litigation as one of his career highlights.

"It's a great honor to be a part of this list," said Brown. "I see it as a testament to the firm and our clients, as I certainly would not have been recognized if not for the work of our team and the cases on which I have had the opportunity to work."

"We are very proud of Loren and all he has accomplished for our clients and firm," said Robert J. Mathias, U.S. chair of DLA Piper's Litigation practice. "He is an amazingly talented trial lawyer with a deep understanding of the law and the ability to coordinate, manage, and inspire teams in a strategic and effective manner. He has earned the deep respect and trust of our clients and colleagues.
