Microsoft Hunting for Bugs

Microsoft has announced that it plans to scour the code of Microsoft Windows to look for flaws that are similar to one the company patched last week. Last Thursday, Microsoft issued a patch to address the way certain images, called Windows Meta File images, are handled. As Brian Krebs, of the Washington Post reported, before the fix, a flaw in Windows would allow a computer to be infected simply by visiting a website with a malicious image file or “viewing an infected image in an e-mail through the preview pane in older versions of Microsoft Outlook, even if users did not click on anything or open any files.” Once infected, a victim’s computer could be controlled remotely by a hacker. “Windows Security Flaw Is 'Severe',” http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/29/AR2005122901456.html. Unlike other flaws, the WMF flaw was not a gap in the software but a feature of Windows that could be used in a way the programmers did not intend. An article in yesterday’s Cnet News.Com explains:

When WMF files were designed in the late 1980s, a feature was included that allowed the image files to contain computer code that could be executed on a PC, said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at Finnish security company F-Secure.

"This was not a bug; this was something that was needed at the time," Hypponen said. "It is just bad design, design from another era." The graphics file format was introduced with Windows 3.0 in early 1990. Executable code in the image file could help abort the processing of large images on the slow systems of yesteryear, security experts said.

According to Ilfak Guilfanov, a European software developer who created the first fix for the flaw, "WMF was designed a long time ago, when information security was not considered an essential part of software design."

Microsoft has now pledged to look for other instances in which its code could be used for unintended purposes. Cnet News.Com quotes a Microsoft spokesperson as saying that, "Now that we are aware that this attack vector is a possibility, customers can be certain that we will be scrubbing the code to look for any other points of vulnerability based on this kind of attack." “Microsoft to hunt for new species of Windows bug,” http://news.com.com/Microsoft+to+hunt+for+new+species+of+Windows+bug/2100-1002_3-6024778.html?tag=cd.lede

Meanwhile, it is being reported this morning that researchers have identified two additional flaws related to how Windows treats WMF images. These new flaws are reportedly not as serious as the flaw that has recently been patched. That flaw would allow a hacker to take control of Windows machines. The newly identified flaws, instead, simply cause the WMF-viewing software, such as Internet Explorer, to crash. They do not appear to cause the computer to execute malicious code. “Two new Windows bugs found,” http://www.techworld.com/applications/news/index.cfm?NewsID=5120

GREENSBORO – January 10, 2006 – Smith Moore LLP is proud to announce 18 of the firm's attorneys have been named to Business North Carolina's 2006 Legal Elite listing of the best lawyers in their fields. Smith Moore attorneys were recognized in nine of 12 possible categories.

Term limits were created for the top winners in each specialty from previous years, and those recognized as being among the state's top practitioners were recognized in the Legal Elite Hall of Fame, rather than in the annual list.

Smith Moore attorneys recognized in the 2006 Legal Elite listing include:

Bruce Ashley (Construction)
E. Kent Auberry (Business)
Jonathan A. Berkelhammer (Litigation)
Carole W. Bruce (Tax and Estate Planning)
Harold N. Bynum (Environmental)

Denise Smith Cline (Employment)

To select the honorees, Business North Carolina distributed ballots to more than 17,000 lawyers licensed by the State Bar in North Carolina, asking them to name the best attorneys in a variety of legal specialty areas.

Participants were not permitted to vote for themselves. Attorneys could vote for members of their firms, but only if they also voted for someone outside of their firm in the same category. Votes cast for attorneys outside of a voter's firm were weighed more heavily than those for colleagues. Lawyers who did not receive votes from outside of their firm did not qualify, regardless of the number of votes received. More than 1,700 lawyers received votes, with 495 getting enough to be named to this year's Legal Elite.
