Gibbons Promotes Five Women to Director and Counsel Positions
Gibbons has made history by elevating five women attorneys, two of whom are part-time, to Director and Counsel positions within the firm. Lan Hoang, Jennifer Hradil, and part-time attorney Susan Nardone, all resident in the firm's Newark office, have been named Directors. Debra Clifford, resident in the Newark office, and part-time attorney Jennifer Gelshenen, resident in the New York office, have been named Counsel to the firm.

"The promotion of these five outstanding attorneys is not only a testament to the firm's commitment to the advancement of women attorneys, but also demonstrates how important women and their contributions are to the overall success of this law firm." says Patrick C. Dunican, Jr., Managing Director of the firm. "Jennifer, Lan, Susan, Debra and Jennifer, as well as all of our women attorneys, make our firm stronger and better because of their strong leadership, outstanding accomplishments and commitment to excellence."

With its commitment to the development, advancement and support of women attorneys, Gibbons maintains a strong presence of women within the management and executive levels of the firm. Currently, the firm has 36 women associates and 22 women directors and counsel. In addition, since 1997, the firm has supported the work of the Gibbons Women's Initiative, an important platform for new and seasoned women attorneys to participate side-by-side with colleagues from other practice areas and offices of the firm, and with firm clients and contacts. Clearly, the work of the Gibbons Women's Initiative has helped to increase the number of women in leadership positions within the firm.

The firm's 15 women Directors and 7 women Counsel hold important leadership positions at the firm, serve as mentors for younger women lawyers and have gained recognition for their professional and community achievements. Three of the firm's nine departments are headed by women and three women lawyers have been named by their peers among The Best Lawyers in America in their practice areas. In addition, the firm's Chief Operating Officer, Chief Information Officer, Director of Benefits, and Director of Marketing are all women.

The promotion of Susan Nardone and Jennifer Gelshenen showcases the opportunities and support available to part-time attorneys within the firm. The Gibbons "family-friendly" policy, which was implemented in 1997, encourages women to resume their legal careers after having children, and work first on a 60% basis of the hours expected of a full-time attorney per year, and later on an 80% basis of the hours expected of a full-time attorney per year.

"Gibbons is committed to supporting part-time attorneys at every level at the firm and providing the flexibility that is necessary when juggling the demands of work and family. The promotion of Susan Nardone to Director and Jennifer Gelshenen to Counsel clearly demonstrates the importance we place on helping women attorneys achieve their career goals while maintaining a healthy work/life balance," says Christine A. Amalfe, Chair of the Employment Law Department and Gibbons Women's Initiative Executive Council member. "It is very important that we encourage talented women attorneys to stay in the practice of law and that we continue to develop ways to assist them in both their career and family endeavors. Clearly, Gibbons and our clients directly benefit from the involvement of talented and experienced women attorneys."

Dickinson Wright Announces Creation of Intellectual Property Academy Run by Harold W. Milton, Jr.
Training program is designed to train attorneys on cost-effectively drafting quality patent applications

DETROIT, Mich. (January 12, 2006) – Dickinson Wright PLLC announces the introduction of the Dickinson Wright Intellectual Property Academy. The Academy's program is designed to produce high quality patent applications by blending the experience of a dedicated senior attorney with the talent and enthusiasm of a law student or recent law grad who is also a degreed engineer or scientist.

The Academy will be run by Mr. Harold (Hal) W. Milton, Jr., a patent attorney with more than 40 years of experience in patent preparation, prosecution and licensing. Milton, widely considered the "Dean of Michigan Patent Training," is coming out of a recently announced retirement to head Dickinson Wright's IP Academy training program. To date, Milton has trained more than 100 attorneys, developing a formalized program involving a series of skill-building courses including hands-on drafting of patent applications.

Dickinson Wright and Mr. Milton are developing the IP Academy as a means of addressing an obvious need in the IP market. Law schools and most law firms do not have dedicated programs for training law students and associate attorneys on the intricacies of patent preparation and prosecution. The Academy is specifically designed to train both technically-educated law students and associate attorneys on the intricacies of efficiently drafting quality patent applications. Although in the past Milton has concentrated on training students attending law school, the training has been so successful Dickinson Wright is establishing the broader based Academy to train not only law students but law school graduates with minimal or no patent preparation training.

Milton, who has personally and through his mentoring, drafted or edited the main claim or definition of the invention in over 3,000 patent applications, says "Dickinson Wright made me an offer I couldn't refuse. This is the culmination of a 35 year dream to improve training in this area and a once in a lifetime opportunity." He will serve as both mentor and teacher at the Academy, supervising the Academy, reading and editing trainee work product and assigning the patent work to appropriately skilled trainees.

The benefit of the Academy to Dickinson Wright's clients is clear – the availability of high quality patent applications delivered on a timely and cost-effective basis, often in less than 30 days. The benefit to Dickinson Wright is at least two-fold: improved client service, and the development of talented young attorneys to support Dickinson Wright's fast-growing IP practice.

The IP Academy demonstrates Dickinson Wright's commitment to developing a first class patent practice and is an addition to Dickinson Wright's extant training and mentoring programs. Dickinson Wright conducts regular internal training sessions for its associates, has structured programs to advance mentoring, diversity and women's issues within the Firm, and is an ICLE partner.
