United Blood Services, Lewis and Roca Award 42" Plasma TV - December Donor Saralyn Yoder Wins Big for Saving Lives!
United Blood Services, Arizona’s largest non-profit community blood provider, today announced the winner of a 42-inch high definition plasma television. Saralyn Yoder, a multi-gallon blood donor, won the television by being selected from among more than 15,000 people who volunteered to give blood in December. The Arizona-based law firm Lewis and Roca donated the television during a holiday campaign to encourage blood donations. It will be awarded to Yoder on January 19 at Best Buy.
It was Yoder’s 68th blood donation on December 10 that earned her the television. “This is very exciting and very much a surprise,” she said. A Phoenix native who works as a clerk for the Maricopa County Superior Court, Yoder comes from a family of blood donors. She gave the first time 25 years ago with United Blood Services and has been going strong every since. “You never know who you might be helping. It could end up being someone you care about,” Yoder pointed out. “It’s always a bright spot in my day each time I donate.”
A longtime supporter of United Blood Services, Arizona patients have greatly benefited from the commitment of Lewis and Roca to the community blood program. In addition to the donation of the television, the law firm sponsored five blood drives last year, providing 224 pints of blood for Arizona hospitals. Since each donation can be separated into components to benefit several patients, their generosity has touched the lives of hundreds of people across the state. “Because Arizona is our home, we are anxious to find ways to make it a better place to live,” said Foster Robberson, a partner with Lewis and Roca. “We want to do whatever we can to increase support of the community blood program, especially around the holidays.”
The partnership with Lewis and Roca was established to help offset the decline in donations experienced during the winter holiday season. According to United Blood Services Executive Director Audrey Gietzen, donor vacations, school recesses and the cold/flu season all reduced the number of people available to give blood. “In addition to providing blood transfusions for thousands of patients, Lewis and Roca gave United Blood Services the opportunity to show our donors how much we truly appreciate them,” said Gietzen. “Since blood has a shelf life of 42 days, the December donations will continue to help patients through January, the highest blood usage month of the year.”
About United Blood Services
United Blood Services has been Arizona’s non-profit community blood provider since 1943 and serves patients in 53 Arizona hospitals. The UBS network is one of the nation’s oldest and largest non-profit blood service organizations, and is a founding member of America’s Blood Centers and the American Association of Blood Banks. KEY APPOINTMENTS MARK STRATEGIC EXPANSION OF KING & SPALDING LONDON OFFICE JOHN L KEFFER ELECTED MANAGING PARTNER Tax and Employment Specialists Join the Firm Growth of International Arbitration Team
King & Spalding LLP, the international law firm, announced today a number of key appointments as part of a strategic expansion of the firm’s London business. These appointments will result in a significant increase in the range of services King & Spalding can offer its clients out of London.

John L Keffer, age 48, has been appointed Managing Partner of the London office and will succeed George S Branch, whose three-year term came to an end at the close of 2005.

An international M&A and corporate lawyer with considerable experience in European and Latin American transactions, Keffer joined the King & Spalding Houston office as a partner in 1998, after 15 years with Bracewell & Giuliani LLP. Keffer was instrumental in expanding King & Spalding’s corporate practice in Houston, before moving to the UK in 2003 to help launch the firm’s London office. Keffer is a member of King & Spalding’s Corporate Group.

Charles Alexander, who joined King & Spalding as a partner in 2004, will succeed Keffer as Head of the London Corporate practice.

In his new role as Managing Partner, John Keffer will oversee a series of strategic appointments for the London office throughout January and February 2006.

Kevin Conway will join King & Spalding as a partner and launch the London office’s tax practice. Conway, who joins King & Spalding from the International Tax Group at Clifford Chance, specialises in cross border multi-jurisdictional transactions and has extensive experience in complex international tax systems. He will also serve the firm’s existing international tax clients, currently supported by the tax groups in King & Spalding’s Atlanta and Washington DC offices.

Pulina Whitaker, an employment law specialist, will join the firm from Barlow Lyde & Gilbert as a Senior Associate. Pulina’s arrival will permit the corporate group to expand the range of services it can offer to its clients.

January will also see the continued growth of King & Spalding’s International Arbitration group in London with two new appointments to the team. Ken Fleuriet, Counsel in the International Arbitration practice group, will transfer from King & Spalding’s Houston office to join the London firm. Héloïse Hervé, Avocat au Bureau de Paris, will join the firm, relocating to London from Paris, where she has been working for Shearman & Sterling.

Commenting on his own appointment and the expansion of the London office, Keffer said:
“I am honored to have been asked to manage the firm’s London office. Under the stewardship of George Branch, the London firm has had a great start over the last three years. Since we opened our doors in 2003, we have tripled in size from six lawyers to more than 20. I look forward to building on the strong foundation that has already been established.

“The appointments of Kevin and Pulina follow several months of strategic recruitment. They both bring a wealth of specialist experience and will be great assets to the London office. Our International Arbitration group has also grown significantly over the last year and the appointments of Ken and Héloïse will enable the team to further build on its European base”.

“The London office is well situated to serve our global clients who have business, not only in the European market, but also in the Middle East and Africa. The firm has been the beneficiary of its clients’ globalisation in recent years, and the London office is a consequence of that development.”

Robert Hays Jr., Chairman of King & Spalding, said:
“These strategic appointments demonstrate our long-term commitment to growing the London practice, which has experienced considerable success in its first three years. We will continue to develop the firm’s core practices of Corporate, Finance, Energy and International Arbitration while also exploring opportunities in further service areas. We are enthusiastic about the opportunities before the firm as a whole and I anticipate the London operation being at the centre of many of those opportunities.”

Jones Day advises on major Russia energy financing
London - Jones Day is advising Sibir Energy plc on a further issue of shares in Sibir to its major shareholder Bennfield Limited. The amount to be subscribed by Bennfield Limited is $404 million at £4 per share - an 8% premium to the share price at the time of the announcement of the transaction. The transaction enables Mr Igor Kesaev, a prominent Russian businessman, to acquire a 50% stake in Bennfield Limited from its current shareholder, Mr Chalva Tchigirinski, for a total consideration of $620 million of which $404 million will be used to fund the subscription into Sibir.

The Jones Day team succeeded in processing the deal in a very short timeframe. The deal was announced on 9 December 2005, only two days after instructions were received. On 4 January 2006, a circular requesting approval for the transaction was sent to Sibir shareholders.

Sibir also announced its intention to raise a further $137.6 million by means of a placing by JP Morgan Cazenove of shares with institutional shareholders at the same time as the placing with Bennfield is completed.

Max Thorneycroft commented: If both transactions are completed the market capitalisation of Sibir at £4 per share will be £1.26 billion making it one of the largest UK independent oil and gas companies.

The injection of funds will leave Sibir debt free and able to take advantage of the opportunities available to Russian controlled companies in Russia.

We have acted for Sibir since its foundation in 1996. They have been very far sighted in seeing the potential of what is going to be the most important oil province in the future and we are very pleased to have assisted them at this latest stage in their development. The transaction is a good example of how we can combine the corporate finance and oil and gas expertise in our London and Moscow offices to achieve a rapid result for our client."

Max Thorneycroft, Leon Ferera and Abbe Frigerio acted on the transaction. Strand Partners and JP Morgan Cazenove advised Sibir. Baker & McKenzie advised Bennfield.
