PoGo is on the go-go
When James J. McAlpin Jr., managing partner of Powell Goldstein LLP, hired famed libel attorney Lin Wood Jr. in January, he was doing more than just snagging one of Atlanta's fiercest trial attorneys.

He was executing a strategy to put more shine on the reputation of an almost 100-year-old law firm, which in recent years has seen its ranks dwarfed by Atlanta's goliaths, King & Spalding LLP and Alston & Bird LLP.

H&L Attorney Takes Office as DBA President
Practice Areas: Complex Commercial Litigation, Probate Litigation

DALLAS — Hughes & Luce partner Mark K. Sales takes office this month as the 97th president of the Dallas Bar Association, carrying on a long-standing tradition of bar leadership at all levels by members of the firm.

“This is going to be a great year for the DBA,” said Sales, who plans to focus his attention on encouraging more pro bono efforts by attorneys and developing ways to educate the public on the importance of the legal system and the work of lawyers.

“I look forward to tackling the challenges and opportunities that will come and appreciate the support I’ve received from my Hughes & Luce colleagues.”

Sales follows in the footsteps of H&L partners Mark Shank, who served as DBA president in 2001, and Bob Davis, who served as DBA president in 1980. In addition, H&L attorneys have served as president of the Texas Young Lawyers Association, Dallas Young Lawyers Association, Dallas Hispanic Bar Association, J.L. Turner Legal Association and Dallas Women Lawyers Association. At the state level, several attorneys have served on the board of directors of the State Bar of Texas, including two as chair of that group, and led various practice sections.

“Bar leadership has been a hallmark of Hughes & Luce over the years,” managing partner Bob Mow said. “We encourage all our attorneys to be involved in the constant improvement of our profession.”

In his 20 years as a lawyer, Sales has represented clients in probate, estate and fiduciary duty litigation; in products liability and insurance matters; and commercial litigation. In addition to his current position, Sales has served as president of the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers, was chair of the DBA board of directors in 2002 and for many years chaired the State Bar of Texas’ Administration of the Rules of Evidence Committee. He is a fellow of the Dallas Bar Foundation, Texas Bar Foundation and Dallas Association of Young Lawyers Foundation.

Sales earned his law degree in 1985 from Baylor University, where he was editor-in-chief of the Baylor Law Review and a member of the Order of Barristers. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Texas A&M University in 1979. Sales was recognized by his peers as one of the top lawyers in Texas in 2004 and 2005 on the Texas Super Lawyer list published by Law & Politics Magazine and Texas Monthly.
