Scholarship Chicago High 5
Chief Legal Officers from major corporations around the country reaffirmed their commitment to diversity in the legal profession by inciting a “Call to Action.” Scholarship Chicago’s High 5 initiative is a response to help create a more diverse and well-prepared workforce for future careers including the field of law.

Here are the facts:

Scholarship Chicago is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping college-bound youth from every neighborhood within the city of Chicago to achieve their dreams through education. Scholarship Chicago provides each of their scholars with scholarship money, monthly college-readiness workshops, adult and peer mentors, and summer internships. The High 5 initiative involves a financial commitment of $11,000 per year for five years, and each High 5 supports five promising young people. Of the total High 5 investment, $5,000 will go to college readiness preparation during the scholars’ senior year in high school and $50,000 will go to college scholarships over four years. Chicago law firms Goldberg Kohn and Winston & Strawn are leading the way by committing to the High 5 initiative and investing in the youth of tomorrow.

"As one part of our firm's diversity initiative, we wanted to diminish obstacles that typically cause under-representation of certain minority groups in the legal profession. Becoming a High 5 sponsor allows us to greatly increase the educational and work opportunities of underprivileged high school and college students and that, in turn, will create a more diverse workforce in the legal field," said David Chizewer, a principal and member of the management committee at Goldberg Kohn.

Similar initiatives are taking place within the financial and public service sectors.

Canadian voters choose Conservatives to form new government
Conservatives win plurality, not majority, of House of Commons seats

Significant reforms for lobbyists, anyone doing business with federal government

Canadian voters today gave the Conservatives the largest number of seats in the House of Commons, but stopped short of awarding them a parliamentary majority.

Conservative leader Stephen Harper, a 46-year old economist, will become Canada's 22nd prime minister, but he will require the support of MPs from other parties to enact important legislation - including significant reforms affecting the lobbying industry and anyone who does business with the Canadian government.

Justice Barry A. Cozier of the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, Joins Epstein Becker & Green's National Litigation Practice
NEW YORK, N.Y. (January 9, 2006) – Barry A. Cozier, Associate Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Second Department, announced today that he will join the law firm of Epstein Becker & Green, P.C. (EBG) in the National Litigation Practice. Justice Cozier joins a litigation practice of more than 50 attorneys in 11 offices across the United States.

Barry A. Cozier was appointed in 2001 by Governor George Pataki to the position of Associate Justice in the Appellate Division, New York State's intermediate appellate court. In this position on the busiest appellate court in the state, he heard civil and criminal appeals from trial courts within the counties of Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester.

Prior to becoming a Justice in the Appellate Division, Cozier was a Justice in New York State Supreme Court, and also held various positions as a judge, hearing officer and examiner in the New York State court system. Prior to this, he was in private practice as a litigator. Justice Cozier is also an Adjunct Professor at the Fordham University School of Law.

"We are very pleased to start off the New Year with welcoming Justice Cozier to our firm," said George Sape, EBG's managing partner. "We are confident that his litigation background and more than twenty years of experience on the bench will complement the existing strengths of our National Litigation Practice Group."

Justice Cozier said, "After reviewing a variety of alternative private practice platforms for my post-judicial career, Epstein Becker & Green stood out as the unambiguous firm of choice. EBG's growth momentum, practice area concentrations, expanding litigation capability and commitment to diversity spoke volumes to me about the potential here."

EBG's firm member Kenneth G. Standard, former President of the New York State Bar Association, who heads EBG's diversity initiative, said: "It's rare for any firm to attract an individual with the background and stature that Judge Cozier brings to Epstein Becker & Green. In addition to the perspective he brings to our National Litigation Practice group because of his distinguished career on the bench, the fact that he selected EBG among all the available alternatives is testimony to EBG's success in implementing our diversity strategy. I look forward to partnering with him on many fronts, including our on-going recruitment initiatives."

Cozier holds several committee positions such as Chair of the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board, Founding Member of the Black, Latino, Asian Pacific American Law Alumni Association of New York University of Law, member of the New York State and Federal Judicial Council and member of the Advisory Committee on Bar Admissions.

Cozier earned his undergraduate degree from State University of New York at Stony Brook and his law degree from New York University School of Law.
