Hawkins Delafield & Wood LLP Announces Relocation Plans,Renewing its Commitment to Lower Manhattan.
Hawkins Delafield & Wood LLP, a national leader in municipal finance and
known for its role in the growth and continued revitalization of New York City, announced today
that it will be leaving its historic location at 67 Wall Street, to occupy two floors in nearby One
Chase Manhattan Plaza.
After 64 years at 67 Wall Street, Hawkins is ending one of Wall Street’s longest tenancies at a
single address. “The available space at One Chase Manhattan Plaza offers the Firm a very
attractive opportunity to remain in Lower Manhattan,” explained Hawkins Managing Partner
Howard Zucker. “We are very committed to the revitalization of Lower Manhattan and did not
consider options outside of the Downtown Financial District, which has been our home since the
Firm was founded.” Another Hawkins partner, Bruce Van Dusen, who spearheaded the
negotiations on behalf of the Firm, stated: “We are excited to be able to move to state-of-the-art
space that meets our current needs and provides the opportunity for growth.”
One of New York’s more storied law firms, Hawkins Delafield & Wood traces its roots to 1854,
when Dexter A. Hawkins founded a practice at #10 Wall Street. Three years later, Lewis L.
Delafield, Sr., a well-known financial and business lawyer from one of New York’s most
prominent families, started a practice nearby in the financial district. These two firms merged in
1892 to become Hawkins & Delafield. The Firm became Hawkins, Delafield & Wood in 1945.
Hawkins gained a reputation in the 19th Century for specialized expertise in the area of
governmental finance. The Firm was a leader in developing the concept of the revenue bond
authority and worked on the first special taxing districts for municipalities and private utilities.
During the 1920s and 1930s, the Firm was active in the establishment and development of many
of the authorities and agencies within the New York area, and serves them to this day.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Hawkins partners were again leaders in extending the revenue bond
authority concept to cover highways, airports and other mass transit systems, as well as publiclyowned
utility systems. In the late 1960s and 1970s, Hawkins, Delafield & Wood pioneered the
development of major governmental loan programs for colleges, universities, hospitals and
public housing projects. With 100 attorneys among seven offices nationwide, Hawkins is the
largest nationally-ranked law firm whose practice is devoted exclusively to municipal finance
and contracts.
The Firm played a critical role during New York City’s fiscal crisis in the 1970s, serving as bond
counsel to the Municipal Assistance Corporation and signing its opinion on the validity of “Big
Mac” bonds. More recently, after the terrorist attacks of 2001, Hawkins was instrumental in the
development of the Liberty Bond program. As bond counsel to the New York City Industrial
Development Agency, (“IDA”) attorneys at Hawkins advised as to elements to be included in the
enactment of the Liberty Bond legislation. That legislation resulted in $8 billion in tax-exempt
bonds being made available for redevelopment within the City.
“As bond counsel to the IDA, Hawkins Delafield & Wood has been our partner for many years
and I wish the Firm many more years of success in its new home,” said Andrew M. Alper, IDA
Chairman and President of the New York City Economic Development Corporation. “The
unprecedented spirit of cooperation among the public and private sectors has enabled us to make
remarkable strides in revitalizing Lower Manhattan, and I applaud Hawkins Delafield & Wood
for making this major commitment to the downtown business community.”
