White & Case's Global Competition Practice Among World's Best According to Industry Survey
Firm Also Ranked Among the Most Popular With Corporate Counsel

Washington, D.C., February 1, 2006 ... For the fourth year in a row, White & Case LLP has been named one of the world's top 10 antitrust/competition law firms by the leading journal, Global Competition Review. White & Case ranked sixth out of 100 law firms worldwide in the latest survey from the GCR 100, an independent survey conducted annually of the world's best competition law practices.

"White & Case has once again been recognized for its worldwide, comprehensive antitrust capabilities. Since the GCR 100 survey first began, we have consistently moved up in the rankings from ninth in 2002 to eighth in 2003 and now sixth for the past two years," said J. Mark Gidley, head of White & Case's Global Competition practice. "The fact that we consistently rank among the top firms is a testament to our clients and the trust they place in us to assist them with their competition needs. This is especially gratifying given that the bet-the-company nature of antitrust work is such that many clients are generally reluctant to embrace new approaches or shed a previous law firm relationship."

Fortune 500 corporate counsel also ranked White & Case's Global Competition practice as one of the "Top 10 Most Popular Firms." GCR surveyed 300 corporate counsel from Fortune 500 companies to find out which antitrust practices they rely on regularly to resolve conflicts.

White & Case's Global Competition practice has grown from one lawyer to 134 in ten years. Fourteen percent of all the Firm's lawyers are antitrust/competition authorities, with 51 percent based in the US and 44 percent based throughout Europe, including in White & Case's Brussels office.

GCR 100 is the only qualitative survey of the international competition law firm marketplace. It rates firms based on size and a variety of qualitative factors, including coverage, degree of specialization as a percentage, eminence of personnel, historical pedigree and recent success, among others.

Baltimore, MD (February 1, 2006) – Craig A. Thompson, a trial lawyer, noted public speaker and community activist who has hosted several popular television and radio programs in Baltimore, is joining Venable LLP. He will work in the Product Liability and Toxic Torts Group in the firm’s Baltimore office.

Mr. Thompson, 37, joins Venable from the Law Offices of Peter Angelos, P.C. His litigation work has focused on product liability and mass tort civil liability issues, including a number of high-profile class actions. Mr. Thompson has extensive experience with consulting clients on complex issues regarding liability and damages.

Mr. Thompson has also served as in-house counsel at the Council for Economic and Business Opportunity, where he managed that firm’s legal operations. He also worked as an associate for the Minority Business Enterprise Legal Defense Fund, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC and founded by former Maryland Congressman Parren J. Since 1995, he has hosted a radio talk show on WEAA-FM in Baltimore and regularly presents speeches, lectures and workshops to schools, colleges, corporations and other national organizations on legal and social matters. He also hosted a television talk show on Baltimore’s UPN affiliate from 1999-2005.

Among his numerous honors and awards, Mr. Thompson has twice been selected as one of the “40 under 40” by the Baltimore Business Journal, and Mayor Kurt L. “With his diverse background, his speaking and broadcast careers and especially his ability to move seamlessly between the worlds of business and public service, Craig has had a remarkable career for a young attorney,” said M. King Hill, III, chair of Venable’s Product Liability and Toxic Torts Group. “But beyond his visibility in the community, Craig has first-rate skills as a trial lawyer. His ability to juggle many different assignments is a testament to his intellect and serves as a hallmark of a good litigator. We expect that he will make a significant mark at Venable.”

“Venable has a reputation as a great litigation firm, with national stature in so many of the areas that interest me – class actions, mass tort and product liability, and commercial litigation, as well as white collar work and investigations,” said Mr. Thompson. “I am excited about the opportunity to provide quality legal service to our existing clients, and work diligently to develop additional clients for the firm.”

“The firm also has shown a serious commitment to diversity and community involvement, including extensive pro bono work,” he added. Mr. Thompson noted Venable’s recently announced strategic alliance with Brown & Sheehan, LLP, a Baltimore minority-owned law firm, as well as the work done by the Venable Foundation, which contributes to local-based civic, educational and other groups in the Washington-Baltimore-Virginia area.

“Given my energy level and multiple interests, Venable is the perfect place for me to practice – I look forward to working with such a talented group of lawyers who offer superior legal counseling and also give back to the communities in which they live,” Mr. Thompson said.

A well-known figure in Baltimore, Mr. Thompson was selected for a special appointment to a three-person state panel investigating the administrative and financial practices in the Baltimore City Public School System, as well as to serve on the Governor’s Task Force on African American Entrepreneurship in Baltimore City.

Jury Awards Shearman & Sterling Client Over $43 Million
Brian H. Polovoy, Alan S. Rabinowitz, James L. Garrity Jr., George J. Wade, Elizabeth R. Weiss, Brendan N. Snodgrass

Shearman & Sterling recently obtained a victory for HSA Residential Mortgage Services of Texas, Inc. (RMST) following a three week trial against State Bank of Long Island (State Bank). The 10-member jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York rendered a unanimous verdict in favor of RMST and awarded RMST $43,856,746.03 -- the full amount of the damages RMST sought. RMST will ask the Court to award prejudgment interest and special damages to bring the total judgment to over $70 million.

RMST, a subsidiary of American General Finance, Inc., was a mortgage warehouse lender. In 1999 and 2000, Island Mortgage Network defrauded RMST and other warehouse lenders and diverted money wired to purchase residential mortgages around the country. In June of 2002, RMST and two other warehouse lenders filed a lawsuit alleging that State Bank aided and abetted the fraud of Island Mortgage Network. RMST's two co-plaintiffs settled their claims against State Bank just before the trial began. The jury rendered its verdict on January 30.

News of the verdict was reported by the Associated Press, New York Newsday, New York Law Journal, and American Banker.

Attorneys included partners Brian Polovoy (NY-LT) and Jim Garrity (NY-BR), Of Counsel George Wade (NY-LT), associates Alan Rabinowitz (NY-LT), Elizabeth Weiss (NY-LT), Brendan Snodgrass (NY-LT), David Wishengrad (NY-LT), and Jae Woo Park (NY-LT), and legal assistants Renee Cumberbatch (NY-LT) and Christina Benkert (NY-LT).
