DLA Piper appoints leading energy and utility expert Neil Upton to spearhead international practice
Birmingham - Leading UK and European energy and utilities expert, Neil Upton, is to join DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary ("DLA Piper") as the organisation's first Head of Energy and Water for Europe, the Middle East and Africa ("EMEA"). The appointment is a coup for DLA Piper and heralds an ambitious growth strategy that will see the organisation build its energy expertise both in the UK and internationally. The intention is to create the leading energy and water practice in the UK and EMEA within five years, leveraging off the very strong credentials that already exist at DLA Piper.

Neil joins from White & Case where he led the Energy and Water team within EMEA and had previously led the London office as Chief Operating Partner. Neil's practice focuses on the power and water sectors, advising clients on project finance, financial restructuring, privatisations, energy and carbon trading, supply activities, outsourcing and regulation. His most recent transactions include working on the Gulf Interconnector Project; a major bid to provide outsourcing services to the Abu Dhabi electricity and water industries and advising on two IPP projects in South Africa.

Neil trained and qualified at Slaughter and May where he spent six years before moving to Wragge & Co in Birmingham, joining as an associate and being made a partner in May 1996. During the course of his career, Neil has advised on UK and international projects and transactions and has successfully established practices in energy and other utilities wherever he has been.

Mark Swindell, Head of Commercial & Projects said: "Neil is recognised by practitioners and clients alike as an expert in this sector and he will clearly contribute to the development of our energy and water practices both domestically and internationally. The UK, European and global energy markets are experiencing great change and we have very ambitious plans for our practice."

Neil Upton responded: "I am very excited by the opportunity to lead the team here at DLA Piper. I expect us to be extraordinarily successful and to have fun delivering incisive, commercial and practical legal advice to our clients in these sectors. If our practice is to have any "mission statement" it shall be the client comes first, last and everything in between.
