John Duffy was selected as a member of the "40 Attorneys Under Forty in Illinois to Watch."
Donohue Brown Mathewson & Smyth LLC, one of Chicago's pre-eminent trial practice boutique law firms, proudly announces that John Duffy was recently selected as a member of the ""40 Attorneys Under Forty in Illinois to Watch."" John was nominated by his peers, including several of his former opposing counsel. Attorneys in Illinois nominated a record 1,200 lawyers for the award in 2005.

John made partner in the firm in 2002. He specializes in product liability and professional liability. John has most recently developed a reputation as an accomplished lawyer for the defense of attorneys accused of malpractice. He has tried one such case and dismissed with prejudice cases against lawyers facing exposure of $39 million, $5 million, and $1.2 million. John was also lead defense counsel in the significant prematurity case of Schulson v. D'Ancona & Pflaum, LLC, an appellate decision that clarifies previous cases and limits significantly the exposure of lawyers representing clients in high stakes breach of contract suits. John has also spoken on the issue of lawyer's malpractice at the Chicago Bar Association.

Donohue Brown Mathewson & Smyth LLC was founded in 1995 by partners from Baker & McKenzie. The firm successfully tries difficult, high exposure cases in some of the country's most challenging jurisdictions. This success record at trial also enables it to obtain favorable settlements for clients. The firm represents some of the country's largest and best known manufacturing companies, universities, hospitals and insurance companies. Two partners are ranked as among the top 20 tort defense lawyers in Chicago and four partners have been elected as fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Munck, P.C. combines with Butrus Khoshbin Wilson Vogt, LLP
The Dallas-based trial, transaction and technology law firm Davis Munck, P.C., has combined with Butrus Khoshbin Wilson Vogt, LLP, a litigation firm focused on large-scale commercial disputes.

The new technology boutique, Davis Munck Butrus, P.C., will have offices in Dallas, Texas and Charlotte, N.C. Under the new moniker, the firm will handle intellectual property procurement, management, licensing and litigation, as well as all phases of complex commercial litigation and business transactions. Davis Munck Butrus is now home to 30 lawyers, including 11 who hold engineering degrees. These attorneys are highly prized among businesses with technology-related legal issues, in patent cases and other matters.

“This transaction accelerates the strategy to position our firm as the premier technologyfocused law firm,” says co-founder William Munck. “At the same time, our technical expertise and broad service offerings provide added capabilities to the current clients of Butrus Khoshbin Wilson Vogt. The added ‘bandwidth’ in our litigation section provides the firm with an even greater capability to provide top-notch legal representation in cases involving complex litigation.” “It will also give all of us access to the resources and expertise you find in a larger firm,” says co-founder John Butrus. “The key is to maintain the speed and flexibility of a small firm, which all our clients have come to expect. I’m confident we’ll continue to do that well.” More than one-third of the attorneys at Davis Munck Butrus have been named to lists of top lawyers in Texas, as chosen by their legal peers and published in Texas Monthly magazine. Previously, Davis Munck had been recognized as ranking among the top four intellectual property law practices in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Chambers Publishing also recognizes Davis Munck as a preeminent technology law firm.

“I am personally familiar with the courtroom skills that the new lawyers have brought to our firm. These highly-experienced litigators will enable us to provide our brand of responsive, high-quality representation to an even broader base of clients, including both technology companies and other clients that require seasoned trial attorneys to handle any type of high-stakes litigation,” says co-founder Jim Davis. “This merger cements our status as one of the top tier litigation firms in the state of Texas.

Formed in 1997, Butrus Khoshbin Wilson Vogt, LLP, has provided clients with seasoned litigation experience in courtrooms across the country. Each of the firm’s partners has a background in business, finance, accounting, or entrepreneurship, giving them the ability to understand what’s best for the businesses they represent.

Davis Munck, P.C., formed in 1996, has carved out a practice devoted to trials, transactions and technology. The firm offers full-service counsel in the areas of commercial litigation, intellectual property management and protection, corporate transactions and securities, employment, and international trade. Davis Munck represents clients from start-ups, to Fortune 500™ companies.

WINSTON & STRAWN WINS $371 MILLION IN DAMAGES FOR MERITOR INVESTORS
On Friday, Winston & Strawn secured a major victory for client Frank Slattery when U.S. Claims Court Judge Loren A. Smith awarded him $371.7 million in his claim against the federal government on behalf of investors in Meritor Savings Bank. If it stands, the award will be the second largest to date in one of many lawsuits accusing the federal government of bad faith dealings during the savings and loan debacle of the 1980s and early '90s.

Winston & Strawn partner Thomas M. Buchanan tried and won the case against the federal government on behalf of investors back in 2002. Investors sued the federal government for breaking its promises in its seizure of Meritor Savings Bank. The Federal Deposit Insurance Company (FDIC) had promised to relax its capital requirements as an incentive for Meritor to rescue failing bank Western Savings Fund, which it did in 1992.

According to the judge, ""In the long run, the FDIC benefited because it made a profit when Meritor was seized."" Buchanan said he expects the government to appeal the award. An additional $402 million will be at issue on appeal, and Judge Smith wrote that the Meritor investors have strong arguments that they deserve that money as well.

Adams and Reese Named Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist of the Year
Adams and Reese has been named the Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist for 2005 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater New Orleans Chapter. For the past 25 years, AFP has honored individuals and organizations whose contributions have made a profound impact on their communities. The firm will be recognized with other civic and community leaders at a luncheon on February 9, 2006. The 25th Anniversary of National Philanthropy Day was November 17, 2005. The awards luncheon and celebration was originally scheduled for that day, but was postponed due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. With unprecedented devastation, hurt and loss as a result of hurricanes this year, the value of philanthropy has never been as great, and makes this year’s event most notable.

“It is an honor for our firm to be recognized with this award,” says Mark Surprenant, Senior Partner in Charge of the New Orleans office and founder of the firm’s corporate philanthropy program, HUGS. “The attorneys and staff who participate in HUGS events and fundraisers do so to help the community in need, and not for recognition. However, the recognition is much appreciated and is a wonderful tribute to our dedicated volunteers.”

Since 1988, Adams and Reese volunteers have served nearly 100 charitable organizations and causes firm wide through the HUGS program. HUGS was designed to foster the spirit of giving among the Adams and Reese attorneys and staff. Since its inception, the firm has devoted thousands of hours and untold dollars to offer our communities ""hands on"" activities and assistance to those less fortunate. Whether in the form of special events or participation in agency-sponsored fundraisers, Adams and Reese is known throughout the region for promoting community action.

“At Adams and Reese, philanthropy and volunteerism is part of our firm culture,” says Charles P. Adams, Jr., the firm’s Managing Partner. “Participating in various community events as a firm not only brings us closer to our communities, but it brings us closer to one another by providing ways that might not exist in the regular course of business. We are proud of our community spirit. It’s truly something that sets our firm apart.”

Adams and Reese is the first law firm to have been awarded the AFP Corporate Philanthropist of Year Award by the GNO Chapter, and in 2000, it was the first law firm to receive the Excellence in Corporate Volunteerism Award by the Points of Light Foundation.

Catherine Comiskey, Senior Development Officer for Loyola University School of Law, nominated the firm for the award. “Year after year, Adams and Reese continues to show its support to our law school and the entire community,” says Comiskey. “They are not only generous with their resources, but they are generous with their time. The firm sets a standard by showing the entire legal community the importance of philanthropy.”

Adams and Reese is a multidisciplinary law firm with nearly 300 lawyers. The firm has offices in New Orleans, LA; Baton Rouge, LA; Birmingham, AL; Houston, TX; Jackson, MS; Mobile, AL; Nashville, TN; and Washington, D.C. American Lawyer Magazine has named Adams and Reese to its distinguished list of the nation’s top 200 firms - “The Am Law 200”.
