Squire Sanders Launches German Office, Expands London Presence
Frankfurt and London – March 8, 2006 – Global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey
L.L.P. is expanding into Germany and doubling the size of its London office with the addition
of lawyers from Haarmann Hemmelrath. The move builds on Squire Sanders’ longtime
presence in Europe and marks the firm’s third significant expansion in less than a year.
“Squire Sanders was one of the first US law firms to open European offices, and Europe
remains an important market to the firm. Our global clientele has come to expect we will be
on the ground where they need us. Germany, as well as expanded capabilities in London,
has been a strategic target of the firm. The additions in Frankfurt and London bolster our
already strong European mergers and acquisitions practice while adding depth in finance,
insolvency, tax, capital markets, energy, and private equity,” said Squire Sanders chairman
R. Thomas Stanton.
“Joining Squire Sanders makes us part of an integrated international firm that reaches
across the United States and from Beijing and Hong Kong to Central and Eastern Europe
and Russia to Latin America,” said Andreas Lehmann, former co-leader of Haarmann
Hemmelrath’s banking and finance practice.
“Our clients in Germany and in London will benefit from Squire Sanders’ extended global
reach, which is among the broadest in the world,” Lehmann said, adding that lawyers
joining Squire Sanders serve clients with business interests in Hong Kong and Shanghai,
Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America as well as the United States.
Mark Cusick, who coordinates Squire Sanders’ European practice, has been looking to add a
strong practice in Germany and said the Frankfurt office team is a perfect fit for the firm’s
client needs in Germany.
“This team brings expertise in banking and finance, corporate mergers and acquisitions,
equity capital markets and tax, and gives Squire Sanders a strong position in one of
Europe’s most significant financial centers,” Cusick said.
Cusick said the lawyers joining Squire Sanders’ London office include noted tax lawyer Peter
Vaines, the former managing partner of Haarmann Hemmelrath’s London office, and Andrew
Visintin, who led Haarmann Hemmelrath’s insolvency and restructuring practice in London.
All told, eight lawyers are joining the Frankfurt office and 20 lawyers are joining Squire
Sanders’ London office, he said.
“The London team has done extraordinary work since that office was established in 2000.
They are an ideal complement to our existing London office and we are delighted that this
much sought-after group of lawyers is joining Squire Sanders,” Cusick added.
The move into Germany and expansion of the firm’s London office is Squire Sanders’ third
expansion in less than a year. In May 2005, the firm opened an office in Poland, combining
www.ssd.com
with the Wiater sp. k. law firm. In September, Steel Hector & Davis LLP combined with
Squire Sanders, expanding the firm’s capabilities in Latin America and reinforcing its
position as one of the strongest global law firms.
Founded in 1890, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. is one of the largest international law
firms, with offices in North America in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Houston, Los
Angeles, Miami, New York, Palo Alto, Phoenix, San Francisco, Tallahassee, Tampa, Tysons
Corner, Washington DC and West Palm Beach. The firm’s offices in Latin America are in
Caracas, Rio de Janeiro and Santo Domingo. In Europe, offices are in Bratislava, Brussels,
Budapest, Frankfurt, London, Moscow, Prague and Warsaw. In Asia, offices are in Beijing,
Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo. Associated offices include Bucharest, Buenos Aires,
Dublin, Kyiv, Milan and Santiago.
