Schnader Appellate Group Feted in The Pennsylvania Lawyer Magazine
In "The Art of Cathedral-Building: Why Appellate Advocacy is Different," published in the March/April 2006 issue of The Pennsylvania Lawyer magazine, article author David Cardone highlights Schnader's Appellate Litigation Practice Group, noting its success as an example of how deciding to appeal a case, and the appeal itself, are becoming part of a discipline best left to appellate practice experts who have the necessary perspective to identify the strongest issues for appeal.

Mathes Offers Advice on Band Agreements
Blackwell Sanders attorney Danica Mathes wrote an article that was featured in the March issue of PlaybackStL Magazine. The article discusses the various factors that bands need to keep in mind when forming an agreement. “A band agreement is to a band what a prenup is to a marriage or a will is to an individual,” Mathes writes. This straight-forward analysis of band agreements is a must-read for managers and members who need to decide on questions of money, assets, business and creative decisions, and other aspects of shaping a band prenup.

Hahn Sworn in as Airport Authority Board Member
Blackwell Sanders Partner Howard Hahn has been nominated by Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey to the board of the Omaha Airport Authority. The nomination was approved at the city council’s Feb. 14 meeting, and he was sworn in at the airport authority’s meeting Feb. 21. Hahn replaces the late Harlan Noddle who died in December. Approximately three years remain in Noddle's five-year term.

Hahn served for five years on the Omaha Planning Board until 2003. He is a former adjunct professor at Creighton University School of Law. Hahn also serves on the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and is a former board member of a number of community organizations, including Opera Omaha, Landmarks Inc. and the Siena/Francis House.

Since its creation in 1959, the Omaha Airport Authority has overseen the operations of Eppley Airfield. Eppley serves more than 4.2 million passengers annually.

Christian Peper Honored
The St. Louis Bar Foundation will present Blackwell Sanders’ Christian Peper with its top award. On March 11, 2006, Peper will be given The Foundation Award at this year’s Fellows of the St. Louis Bar Foundation’s Recognition and Awards Dinner. Peper, as well as John Fox Arnold, will be recognized for his significant contributions to the St. Louis community and legal profession.

Scion of a St. Louis family that had founded, in 1852, the once flourishing Christian Peper Tobacco Company, Peper graduated from Harvard College in 1932 with a degree in the classics, intending to teach.

Deciding instead to become a lawyer, he attended Washington University Law School where he was a member of Order of the Coif and editor-in-chief of the Law Quarterly. Peper passed the bar exam and was admitted to the Missouri Bar the summer before graduation in 1934.

After graduation, Peper was appointed a Sterling Fellow at Yale Law School, from which he received his LL.M in 1937. Upon completion of his education, he embarked upon a career in law and business, where he has served as a law professor, a member of various corporate boards, and a founding member of Martin Peper & Martin in 1941, now known as Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin.

His interests and talents have not been confined to the legal and business world, and he continues to pursue many interests. Peper has contributed to the field of history though his friendship and scholarship with the world-renowned British historian Arnold Toynbee, as evidenced by his work as editor of Toynbee’s “An Historic Conscience: The Correspondence of Arnold J. Toynbee and Columbia Cary-Elwes Monk of Ampleforth.” He has also published papers on Toynbee, which have been translated into Japanese and published in Tokyo.

He devotes time and energy still to The Saint Louis Art Museum, a primary interest of his for more than three decades. In 1984, he received the Museum’s Beaux Arts Council Award for Distinguished Service. Over the years, Peper has been an active supporter of the Abbey of Saint Mary and St. Louis and the Abbey’s affiliated Priory School, which he helped establish in the 1950s. He is also a friend of the Harvard Divinity School.

Brad Broberg joins Winstead\'s Real Estate Structured Finance Practice Group
Dallas (Mar 08, 2006) — Brad Broberg, a Dallas attorney with over 17 years experience in real estate and finance law, joined the Real Estate Structured Finance Practice Group as a shareholder of Winstead Sechrest & Minick P.C. Broberg has significant experience in both the origination and servicing side of Commercial Mortgage Backed Securities (CMBS) and structured finance transactions. He joins more than 75 real estate attorneys and paralegals at Winstead who assist clients with a wide variety of complex commercial real estate and lending transactions.

William Hopkins Honored with Austin Under 40 Award
