Ralph Baxter, chairman and CEO of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, is chairing the nation's largest and longest-running conference for law firm leaders, the Law Firm Leaders Forum, for the 11th consecutive year. Baxter, one of the founders of the forum, has played a pivotal role in making the conference a much-anticipated annual gathering for senior law firm leaders in large- or medium-sized law firms to discuss the changing landscape for the legal business. Panelists at the conference, held this week in San Francisco, will include more than 20 law firm leaders who are recognized for their innovative approaches to management issues.

This year's program includes a keynote address by Dan Abrams, host of MSNBC's ""The Abrams Report"" and NBC News Chief Legal Correspondent. DeLong, professor at the Harvard Business School, Brad Hildebrandt, chairman of Hildebrandt International and Aric Press, editor-in-chief of The American Lawyer.

CDO Market Continues to Strengthen in 2006
London, March 9, 2006 ... Following last year's record-breaking issuance in the European collateralised loan obligation (CLO) market, early first-quarter indications suggest that 2006 will see the market match or better last year's performance.

White & Case Banking & Structured Finance partner David Barwise, commented, ""Indications are that the busy end-of-year CLO pipeline from 2005 has leaked through to the first quarter of 2006. With the volume of leveraged loans in the market still high, there is no sign of deal flow drying up in the medium-term. As the market matures, transactions are pushing back the boundaries in innovation further and further.""

A recent Standard & Poor's report1 highlighted a 33 percent increase in the number of European collateralised debt obligations (CDOs) of leveraged loans, or CLOs, in 2005 compared to 2004 and an 85 percent increase on 2003. The figures represent a total of 24 rated CLO transactions in 2005, 18 in 2004 and 13 in 2003, with the report pointing towards increasing leverage multiples in the market as the main reason for correspondingly high CLO issuance.

White & Case's 44-strong London-based structured finance team has advised on more than 75 transactions in the past 12 months with an aggregate value in excess of $16.5 billion. The second and fourth quarters of 2005 saw the bulk of activity in the European CLO market with nine Standard & Poor's rated transactions pricing in each quarter. White & Case's London team advised on no less than seven of those rated in the last quarter of 2005.

The team recently achieved recognition at the International Securitisation Report Awards held on the evening of January 24, 2006, when one of the deals it advised on last year was named ""CDO Deal of the Year for Europe"". It was the second successive year that White & Case had advised on the award-winning deal in this category. On this occasion, the Firm advised Deutsche Bank, as arranger, on the $400 million bond issue by Eurocredit Opportunities I PLC. Closing on November 1, 2005, the deal stood out for being the first ever European market value CDO. It allows the issue of a wide variety of types of debt over an eighty-year period.

Oblon, Spivak Creates TTAB Rules Blog in Response to New TTAB Rules Proposal
Alexandria, Va. – The law firm of Oblon, Spivak, McClelland, Maier & Neustadt, P.C. has created the TTAB Rules Blog (www.ttab-rules.com) to serve as a resource for attorneys who practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). Oblon, Spivak is the only law firm to count two former TTAB Judges, senior trademark partner David Kera and special counsel Beth Chapman, among its staff.

The firm started the blog in response to the new rules package published by the TTAB on January 17, which is likely to have a serious and negative impact on the ability of trademark owners to resolve trademark issues before the Board in a cost-effective manner. This has caused concern among many practitioners that the new rules will encourage more trademark owners to resort to the federal courts, as the procedures at the Board will become far more cumbersome and result in increased costs to all parties. Running 12 pages in length, the new rules package is extensive. Comments to the proposed rules must be filed with the USPTO by March 20.

“Our goal in creating this blog is to collect the comments and other documents that are relevant to the proposed rules in one location, allowing readers to keep up with developments and post their own comments and articles,” said Jeffrey H. Kaufman, managing partner of the trademark and copyright practice group of Oblon, Spivak. “We believe that additional time is needed to carefully evaluate the impact of the new rules and David Kera, a former TTAB Judge and current senior trademark partner with our firm, appeared before the Trademark Public Advisory Committee (TPAC) to encourage the PTO to extend the public comment period and to hold hearings on the proposed rules.
