Louis W. Fryman, Esq., Chair Emeritus for Fox Rothschild LLP, was re-elected as Chair of the Pennsylvania State Ethics Commission. Fryman was appointed to the State Ethics Commission in March 1998, reappointed in March 2001, and elected to his first term as Chair in May 2002.

“I find it a privilege to serve as Chair of the Commission” Fryman said. “As an attorney but, more importantly, as a citizen, I feel it is of utmost importance that our elected officials perform their duties at the highest standard and are accountable for their actions in their elected capacities. I am proud to serve the Commonwealth and its citizens by insuring that Pennsylvania’s elected officials adhere to the high ethical requirements mandated by the law.”

KUTAK ROCK ACCELERATES GROWTH IN STATE
Addition of Six Experienced Lawyers Boosts Legal Service Capabilities
Kutak Rock LLP, a national law firm with a growing Arkansas presence, has announced the addition of several new attorneys in the firm’s Little Rock and Northwest Arkansas offices. The firm has hired J. Phillip Malcom, David L. Williams, W.A. McCormick and Emily A. Lackey-Neal to open its litigation practice in the Little Rock office, which has traditionally focused on corporate and securities law and public finance. The northwest Arkansas office, based in Fayetteville, has added depth in the areas of corporate and real estate transactions, and litigation, with the hiring of Terry W. Pool and W. Douglas Martin. The firm attracted Malcom, Williams and Lackey-Neal from other Little Rock firms, while McCormick is the former Chief Deputy Prosecutor for Pulaski County. Pool, with Arkansas ties, was attracted from a national law firm in Dallas, Texas, and Martin, originally from Fayetteville, has been practicing in Nashville, Tennessee. With the new additions, Kutak Rock now has 26 lawyers in Arkansas.
ACCELERATING GROWTH I N STATE
Gordon Wilbourn, a partner of the firm in the Little Rock office, said the establishment of a litigation practice in Little Rock fulfills a longstanding strategic goal of Kutak Rock. “The Little Rock office represents a number of major clients in general corporate and corporate finance matters,” Wilbourn pointed out, “and we have long needed to offer these clients litigation services. The new people that have joined the firm can deliver the outstanding services that our corporate clients expect and deserve.”
With respect to the new Fayetteville lawyers, Wilbourn said they represent the continuing growth that office has experienced. “We are continuing to add seasoned lawyers in northwest Arkansas because our clients increasingly require a level of experience and expertise not otherwise available in that market.
Little Rock
With over 29 years of experience, Phil Malcom brings to Kutak Rock a reputation of the highest caliber and a large portfolio of litigation business. A 1975 graduate of Southern Methodist University – Dedman School of Law, his principal concentration is in medical malpractice and pharmaceutical product liability defense. “Kutak Rock is a great firm to work for,” Malcom said. “It gives us the support we need to provide the best possible service for our clients.”
Like Malcom, David Williams, who has been practicing for 26 years, is one of Arkansas’s premier litigation lawyers. A 1978 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, he represents a number of large corporations in a broad range of business litigation matters. His litigation experience includes multi-state class actions, product liability claims, franchise and distribution disputes and matters related to banking, antitrust and securities. Williams said,
ACCELERATING GROWTH I N STATE
“Kutak Rock’s breadth and depth of resources is a unique asset for Arkansas litigation clients,
and the cooperation I get from colleagues here is exceptional. I have the support base of a national firm, with more than 80 litigators in a network of offices across the country. That kind of strength is a great selling point for clients.”
McCormick, a 1987 graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Law, comes to Kutak Rock with 16 years of experience serving as a prosecuting attorney with Pulaski County and supervising a staff of 44 lawyers. The firm expects him to transition well from a criminal prosecution environment to defending clients in civil actions. He will work closely with Malcom, mostly on medical malpractice and pharmaceutical liability cases.
Lackey-Neal, a 2003 graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Law and a second-year litigator, comes to the firm after working with another firm in Little Rock that focused on litigation defense. She expects to work primarily with Malcom, but will assist with other litigation matters as needed.
Northwest Arkansas
Wilbourn said Terry Pool’s experience serving major corporate clients in corporate and real estate transactions makes him a perfect fit for Kutak Rock’s clientele in northwest Arkansas. Pool earned his law degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1994, and is licensed to practice law in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas, as well as being a certified public accountant in Oklahoma. Pool has extensive experience in a broad range of transactional matters, focusing primarily on corporate and commercial real estate transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, residential and retail developments, lending, equity finance and taxation. “My career has afforded me the opportunity to represent many national and regional
corporate and real estate concerns throughout the United States, and I feel privileged to bring my
practice to northwest Arkansas with a firm of such national prominence as Kutak Rock,” Pool said. Like Pool, Doug Martin also graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law, and he practiced in Fayetteville for about a year after his 1997 graduation before moving his practice to Nashville, Tennessee. He has six years of experience representing clients in a range of business litigation matters as well as arbitration and mediation proceedings. Wilbourn said Martin brings excellent skills and solid experience to Kutak Rock and will add expertise to a busy litigation practice in the northwest Arkansas office.

Speller-Thurman Offers Career Guidance to Law School Admits
Students interested in pursuing a successful legal career should set long-term goals, obtain hands-on training in law firms or legal clinics and network with their peers, according to a recent Northwestern University School of Law panel discussion that included Associate Michelle Speller-Thurman. The discussion was held during the law school’s inaugural “Diverse Admit Day 2006 - A Celebration of Diversity.”

The panel of attorneys reflected on their experiences during and after law school, and advised the students of color on how to make the most of their law school years. A consistent theme that emerged from their remarks was that keeping one's “head in the classroom” is important, but only one facet of the learning experience.

“Cross-training your legal education,” said Ms. Speller-Thurman, “with scholarly pursuit and community interaction will yield a deeper understanding of the law.”

Ms. Speller-Thurman, who graduated from Northwestern University School of Law in 1999, suggested that students use the many resources available to them such as clinics, volunteer opportunities, and research projects with professors, to obtain real world training outside of their coursework.

The panelists also advocated practicing and developing social skills. Building bonds with classmates is an underutilized part of the law school experience, they said, and similar networking skills will be vital later on in the students’ professional careers.

Other panelists not pictured were Trevor Jefferson, an attorney with the Department of Justice; Gail Kim associate at Katten Muchin Rosenman; and Andrew Stroth, Senior Vice President of Talent Marketing at CSMG Sports.
