Morrison & Foerster London Announces New Trainee Programme
Morrison & Foerster has announced that the firm has received Law Society approval for a training programme and will begin taking trainees in its London office from September of this year.

The initial intake will be for two trainees and the firm has already received a large number of applications for the posts. The trainees will carry out seats in corporate, technology and litigation with the fourth seat a choice between either employment or finance.

The firm is currently interviewing for their first UK summer programme, which is also to start this year.

Margaret Mannell, Director of Administration in the London office, commented, “The London office has reached a size now where we feel we can commit to a training programme. The firm has always had an excellent reputation for the quality of our work, pro bono performance, diversity in the workplace and development of young lawyers and I think it’s great that the London office is able to continue this tradition.

Jaap Bellingwout: Dutch Tax Lawyer of the Year
Amsterdam, March 20, 2006 - Last week in Amsterdam, during the annual presentation of the ‘State of the Legal Profession’ overview of the KSU publishing House, the Golden Hourglass prizes for the best Dutch lawyers in various practice areas were presented. Prof. Jaap Bellingwout, a partner at the Amsterdam office of Baker & McKenzie, won the tax law category. He was selected from thirty-four leading Dutch tax lawyers nominated for this prize.

Prof. Bellingwout PhD is a lawyer at Baker & McKenzie and Professor of Tax Law at the renowned ‘Vrije Universiteit’ in Amsterdam. In addition, he is a member of the post-graduate faculty at the International Tax Centre in Leiden. Prof. Bellingwout focuses on international and European tax law and has a particular interest in the Dutch Antilles, where he advised the government of Aruba on the reform of the tax system.

Poyner & Spruill LLP Hires Business Development Manager
Charlotte, NC -- Poyner & Spruill is pleased to announce Cynthia L. Caldwell has been named Business Development Manager for the firm, based in the Charlotte office.



Prior to joining Poyner & Spruill, Caldwell provided marketing consulting services to small and medium-sized companies as President of Caldwell Marketing Services. She has experience in publishing and events marketing, and served as Marketing Director for The Charlotte Business Journal.



In this new role, Caldwell will be responsible for the management and implementation of Charlotte-based attorney business development and firm-wide marketing initiatives. She will provide market research for existing and prospective clients, industries, trade associations and community organizations, and manage Charlotte based event, program marketing and PR activities.

Dwayne Watts Joins Nexsen Pruet; Adding Business/Legal Experience to Corporate Group
Charleston, SC - Dwayne A. Watts, whose career includes diverse experience in both law and business, has joined Nexsen Pruet's Charleston office as Special Counsel and will work in the firm's corporate practice group.

Prior to joining Nexsen Pruet he practiced in Los Angeles. He has also held corporate positions with internationally known companies such as Vivendi and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

""He has a tremendous business background in corporate strategy, business development, and mergers and acquisitions, which is matched by solid legal experience. He has most recently advised clients on corporate issues, and musicians and artists on business and entertainment matters.

Watts served as senior director of business and strategic development for Universal Music Group, part of Vivendi Universal. In that capacity, he was involved in merger and acquisition transactions and advised executives on business-related matters. He also conducted broad-based analyses of strategic initiatives and managed various corporate strategic processes from beginning to end.

At PricewaterhouseCoopers, he was senior manager in Mergers & Acquisitions Consulting, advising corporate officers in industries that included healthcare, manufacturing and distribution, technology, Internet, computer software and hardware, entertainment, and lodging.

Watts earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from West Virginia University and his law degree from the West Virginia University College of Law. He also has an MBA from the Kelley Graduate School of Business at Indiana University.

Davies Sponsors Survey Series seeking opinions from CEOs, CFOs and COOs
Results from the first Report on Business C-Suite Survey, sponsored by Davies and KPMG, were announced today. This quarterly survey of CEOs, CFOs and COOs will report on the views of executives from some of Canada's largest companies.
Through our support of this survey series, Davies hopes to provide a better understanding of the views of Canadian business leaders on a range of public policy, management and strategic issues. The surveys are being conducted by the Gandalf Group, led by David Herle. This first survey, focusing on federal priorities, seeks the views of C-Suite executives on a number of issues, including:

expectations for the new government in matters of economic policy and accountability;
priorities and major issues in the new government's platform;
productivity of the Canadian and U.S. economies in the next 12 months;
and the impact of the new conservative government on Canada/U.S. relations.
A report on the survey findings can be found in the Monday, March 20, 2006 Report on Business and David A. Brown, from Davies' Toronto office, appeared on an ROB-TV special presentation at 8.30 p.m. Monday evening to review and comment on the findings. Also on March 20, David Herle from The Gandalf Group discussed to discuss the results at 6:45 a.m. on Canada A.M. and presented to the Economic Club of Toronto over lunch.

Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs Names Thomas Hess Managing Partner of its Columbus Office
Columbus, OH - The law firm of Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP is pleased to announce that Thomas W. Hess has been appointed managing partner of its Columbus office, effective immediately.


Hess joined the firm in 1988 and was one of the founding members of the Buckingham ColumbusSM, which was established in May 1989. He has more than 29 years of comprehensive health care law experience and represents hospitals, medical staffs, nursing homes and physicians throughout the United States.

Hess replaces Donald B. Leach, Jr., who was managing partner from 1997 to 2006. A shareholder of the firm, Leach continues to practice real estate and construction law. Under his leadership, Buckingham ColumbusSM has achieved unprecedented growth.


Hess is a member of the firm's Board of Managers, and is Shareholder-In-Charge of the Client Relations Department. He previously served as chair of the Firm’s Health & Medicine Practice Group. Hess was also appointed by Governor Robert Taft to serve a second three-year term on The Ohio Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators.

Notably, Hess has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America® for 10 consecutive years. He is also recognized as one of Ohio's Super Lawyers™, in the 2004 and 2005 Cincinnati Magazine, as voted by his peers.
